This article was updated with new information on August 25, 2022.

The reign of all things supernatural may not be felt as strongly on The CW since the channel is slowly canceling most of its content as it prepares to be sold off to Nexstar, but there’s no arguing against this vampire drama’s place in pop culture history or its influence on the network itself.

As such, it’s not surprising that fans have continued to rewatch The Vampire Diaries via Netflix and that the series keeps picking up new viewers through the streamer despite the near five years that it’s been off air. Unfortunately, however, the show’s time on the platform is drawing to a close. Here’s what we know about The Vampire Diaries’  impending departure from Netflix.

There has been some back and forth recently regarding the status of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. The show was originally supposed to leave back in March, but it appears the deal with changed to allow Netflix to keep it a little longer. But now the site itself is reporting that the last day to watch the series will be on September 3, 2022.

If you look at the official Vampire Diaries page on Netflix it says so. It doesn’t say explicitly if all seasons will be removed at once or not, though, but we’re assuming that is the case. This news isn’t too surprising because Warner Bros. has slowly been pulling its bigger shows off of Netflix one by one.

While there’s been no word on whether or not The Vampire Diaries will be moving to a new streaming home, if it does it’s likely that platform will be HBO Max. The streamer is the home of CW shows that begun airing in 2019 after Warner Media and ViacomCBS’ licensing deal with Netflix ended.

However, it’s hard to say when or if that will happen yet because The Originals also left Netflix recently (sans the fifth and final season which is still on Netflix) and it has yet to move to HBO Max. Legacies is still streaming all four seasons on Netflix and should be there for a few more years thanks to the old CW/Netflix deal.

Updated on August 25, 2022: HBO Max has confirmed that all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries will stream there the day after the show leaves Netflix, so you can start watching on HBO Max on September 4, 2022.

After the show leaves Netflix you will only be able to watch it if you pay for it from platforms like Amazon, Apple or Vudu. But it does seem likely that the show will eventually transition to HBO Max or the free, ad-supported CW Seed.

We’ll keep you posted on more The Vampire Diaries streaming news as it comes in. Stay tuned to Netflix Life, your go-to site for all things Netflix from your favorite original series to hit television shows on the streamer!

Given that Legacies is over, it looks like it really is time to say goodbye to The Vampire Diaries universe (for now).

Not to worry, we’ve put together a handy guide to where “The Vampire Diaries” is streaming now and where you can watch the spinoff shows — and even assembled some recommendations on what to watch on Netflix to fill the “TVD” void.

“The Vampire Diaries” is now streaming on HBO Max.

After more than a decade on the streaming service, “The Vampire Diaries” left Netflix on Sept. 3, 2022.

In short, the licensing window expired. When Netflix pioneered the streaming model, they were the only game in town and landed exclusive streaming rights to a swath of beloved shows across networks.

In the years since, the streaming wars have seen the landscape shift rapidly with parent companies launching their own streaming services and reclaiming their hit shows from rivals like Netflix and Hulu. That’s why Netflix has lost mega-hits like “The Office” (now streaming on Peacock) and “Friends” (now streaming on HBO Max) — and why it’s poised to lose many more, including “The Vampire Diaries.”

Netflix and The CW first struck their exclusive streaming deal in 2011, which was renewed in 2016 and expired in 2019, so you can expect to see plenty more The CW favorites shuffling off of Netflix in the future.

Both “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff shows are currently still streaming on Netflix and no official expiration date has been announced for their Netflix run.

Don’t have HBO Max and want to scratch that “Vampire Diaries” itch? Seen “The Originals” and “Legacies” too many times? If you’re looking for some new shows like “The Vampire Diaries” to watch next, Netflix has a few options that might do the trick.

“TVD” star Ian Somerhalder returned to the realm of vampires in the Netflix original series “V Wars,” playing a scientist facing down a potentially apocalyptic vampire plague.

If you’re looking for something a bit more tonally aligned with the original series, the recent (and sadly short-lived) YA debut “First Kill” pits a fledgling teen vamp against a teenage monster hunter … who also might be the love of her life. It’s got plenty of monsters and soapy drama, just don’t get too attached — both series were canceled after one season.

Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” also offers plenty of mystical misadventures and coming-of-age romance. And of course, if you love The CW’s genre-driven teen series, they don’t get much wilder than “Riverdale” — which, bonus for fans of the previous suggestion, has now officially crossed over with “CAOS.”
