Great question! There are actually a few different places called Bastille, but I'm guessing you mean the famous historical one?

The Bastille was a fortress in Paris, France, that became famous during the French Revolution. The exact location was in what's now the 4th arrondissement of Paris, where the Place de la Bastille stands today.

The actual fortress was demolished between 1789 and 1790, right after the French Revolution started. Nowadays, you can visit the square and see:

  • The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) in the center
  • The Opéra Bastille - the modern opera house
  • Remnants of the foundation in the Bastille metro station

If you're ever in Paris, it's definitely worth visiting - the area has great cafes and a really cool market nearby!

Just to clarify since there might be some confusion - the Bastille prison itself doesn't exist anymore, but the area is very much still there! It's located at the intersection of several Paris neighborhoods and is a major transportation hub.

The exact coordinates are approximately 48.8532° N, 2.3693° E if you're looking at a map.

What's interesting is that only about 5% of the original foundation remains, and you can see it in the Bastille metro station on line 5. The rest was completely torn down by revolutionaries who literally picked the place apart stone by stone!

Fun fact: Many of the stones were actually reused to build the Concord Bridge nearby.

To be super clear for anyone visiting Paris: When people say "Bastille" today, they're usually referring to the large circular square where the fortress once stood, not an actual building. It's bordered by Rue Saint-Antoine, Rue de Lyon, and several other streets.

The area has completely transformed from the grim prison it once was - now it's filled with restaurants, bars, and is particularly known for its nightlife. Every July, they have massive Bastille Day celebrations there with concerts and fireworks.

If you want to learn more about the history, the Carnavalet Museum nearby has some excellent exhibits about the Bastille and the French Revolution.
