Gawr Gura (がうる・ぐら) is a virtual YouTuber affiliated with Hololive English.[2][3] She is a member of Hololive English - Myth (stylized as HoloMyth), alongside Takanashi Kiara [ja] (小鳥遊キアラ), Mori Calliope [ja] (森カリオペ),[4] Ninomae Ina'nis [ja] (一伊那尓栖), and Watson Amelia [ja] (ワトソン・アメリア).[5] She debuted on September 13, 2020, and has since become the most subscribed virtual YouTuber, amassing over 4 million subscribers.[6][7][8] Her livestreams focus on entertainment, and primarily consist of Let's Plays, karaoke, and chats with the audience. Gura is often called "Same-chan" in Japan, same meaning shark.[9]

Cover Corporation announced auditions for English speakers from April 23 to May 24 of 2020, following the global success of its Japanese VTuber lineup.[10][11] The design of Gawr Gura was illustrated by Amashiro Natsuki,[12][13] and the original modeling was done by Shin Umiushi.[14]

Gura's Twitter activities first began on September 9, 2020.[15] Her first YouTube livestream was broadcast at 6 AM JST on September 13,[16] to a viewership of approximately 45,000 people; the VOD gained over 800,000 views in the span of three days.[17] On November 28, "Gawr Gura" was listed in the Niconico Japanese Internet Pop 100 as one of the top 100 most popular search terms of that year on Niconico and Pixiv, ranking 99th.[18]

Her channel reached 1 million subscribers on October 22, 2020,[19][20] which was the fastest growth of any VTuber channel. She is the third VTuber overall to reach 1 million, behind Kizuna AI and Kaguya Luna [jp].[19] On January 18, her channel subscribers surpassed 2 million, making her the second VTuber to reach this milestone, second only to Kizuna AI,[21][22] and she celebrated with a karaoke stream on January 23.[23] On May 7, her first outfit reveal stream reached a peak of 194,280 simultaneous viewers,[24][25] breaking the VTuber record previously held by Sakura Miko (about 145,000).[26][27] Her first original song, "REFLECT", was released on June 21, 2021.[28][29] On June 30, 5:01 a.m. (UTC+0), she reached 2.97 million subscribers on July 1, surpassing Kizuna AI as the most subscribed VTuber on YouTube.[30][31][32][33][34] On July 4, she became the first virtual YouTuber to reach 3 million subscribers, and subsequently 4 million subscribers on June 16, 2022.[7][35][36]

On July 3, 2021, it was announced that a Gawr Gura Nendoroid figure would be produced,[37][38] and on August 6, pre-orders for the figure were opened.[39] On March 18, 2022, following her 3D debut live performance at Makuhari Messe, it was announced that the life-sized figure and 1/7-scale figure of Gura, which were both displayed at the expo, would be auctioned for charity.[40][41]

On April 25, 2022, Cover Corporation announced the Hololive Meet project, featuring all the talent from across Hololive Production and aims to accelerate the expansion of Hololive Production into international markets[42] and named Gawr Gura, Tokino Sora and Ayunda Risu as ambassadors for the project. The three appeared at Anime Expo the same year.[43]

On December 2, 2022, Cover Corporation announced a collaboration with musician DECO*27, named "Holo*27" featuring Hololive talents to perform at the Holo*27 stage at the Hololive 4th Fest. Our Bright Parade on March 19, 2023 and named Gura as one of the participating members.[44]

On February 8, 2023, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government appointed Gura, fellow Hololive Myth member Mori Calliope and Hololive Japan member Sakura Miko as Tokyo Tourism Ambassadors with the aim of "increasing the number of visitors and revitalizing the region" for potential visitors. Hololive Production noted that the three will "share the attractions of Tokyo to the world" [45] [46] [47][48]

On March 13, 2023, in the lead up to Hololive 4th Fes. Our Bright Parade, Cover Corporation introduced a new series of billboards across 9 Tokyo Metro train lines, featuring all Hololive members, debuting a new slogan "A new daily life is around the corner". [49] On March 18, following Day 1 of 4th Fes. Hololive announced that all ten members of Hololive English will hold their first concert, "Connect the World", on July 2nd, to be held at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, California.[50][51]

On September 9, 2020, Gura posted her first tweet with the word "a".[52] On September 13, her first live broadcast was delayed and her first words were "a" ([æ]).[21] Later, the broadcast was interrupted due to equipment problems, leaving tens of thousands of users typing "a" in the chat room, waiting for the broadcast to resume.[53] "a" quickly became an internet meme. This, combined with the overall popular surge of VTubers (and virtual reality in general) as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,[54] likely contributed to Gura's fast success.[53] Only forty days after her debut, she had reached one million subscribers, becoming the first Hololive VTuber to do so.[55]

Gawr Gura (がうる・ぐら) is a female English-speaking Virtual YouTuber associated with hololive, debuting in 2020 as part of hololive English first generation "-Myth-" alongside Ninomae Ina'nis, Takanashi Kiara, Watson Amelia and Mori Calliope.

Gura is currently the most subscribed VTuber worldwide with over 4 million YouTube subscribers, taking the #1 spot from industry pioneer Kizuna AI in 2021.

Gura is friendly and readily likeable, and often amuses her viewers with foolish antics. She has no sense of direction, often misspells and mispronounces words, has trouble remembering her own age, and consistently fails to solve basic math problems, leading viewers to affectionately call her a "dum shark". Memorably, one viewer declared that "Gura has a heart of gold and a head of bone."

She can also be lazy at times. She often forgets about perishable items until they start to rot, and eats baby food "because you don't have to cook it... [or] chew on it."

However, despite her poor math and spelling skills, Gura is quick-witted, clever, and has vast knowledge of Shark Facts. When questioned on why she was not "boing boing," she excused it by claiming that she was "hydrodynamic." Her skill with fast-paced rhythm games is exceptional, and she is highly ambitious. She also occasionally makes lewd jokes, and is familiar with modern meme culture, which she references often.

Gawr Gura is very short, reaching around 141 cm (4'7"). She has a slim body type. She has white, light silver-like hair with baby blue and cobalt blue strands, along with short pigtails on either side of her head, tied with diamond-shaped, shark-faced hair ties. She has cyan pupils, and sharp, shark-like teeth. She can wear a dark cerulean-blue hood in the shape of a shark's head. She wears an oversized, dark cerulean-blue hoodie that fades into white on her arm sleeves and hem, two yellow strings in the shape of an "x" that connect the front part of her white hoodie hood, a shark mouth designed on her hoodie waist with a zipper, gray hoodie drawstrings with two black circles on each of them, and two pockets on the left and right sides of her hoodie waist with white fish bone designs on them. She also wears a gray shirt under her hoodie. She wears dark blue socks, white shoes with pale baby blue shoe tongues, black shoelaces, gray velcro patches on the vamps, and thick, black soles. She wields a sapphire-blue trident and has a cyan shark tail. The upper lobe of Gura's caudal fin, the top part of her tail, is sewn up with gray stitches because of a rock that fell on it while she was in a deep sea trench. The lower lobe of Gura's caudal fin, the bottom part of her tail, has three bite marks, which she forgot the cause of.

On 23 April 2020, following the success of the Japanese-language hololive VTuber group, Cover Corporation announced auditions for English-speaking members.[8] The initial round of auditions ran until 24 May.[9]

During her audition, Gura drew a cute character in a "power stance" with their hands on their hips, which she credited as setting a good impression. Gura recalls being asked about the SCP Foundation, a wiki of articles describing fictional artifacts and beings, although she had to admit that she didn't know what it was.[10]

The members of -Myth- began training around June 2020, three months before their debut.[11]

Gawr Gura's design was known to other members of holoEN as early as 2 July 2020, when Amelia Watson drew the first ever piece of Gawr Gura fanart.[12] This was not the finalized design, however, and an unspecified design change was made before Gura's debut.[13] Internal pre-debut test streams were conducted between all members of hololive English, where in one case a bug caused Gura to spawn in without any clothes.

Gura's YouTube channel and Twitter account were created on 16 July 2020.

On 8 September 2020,[TZ] Gawr Gura was first revealed in a short promotional video alongside the other four members of hololive -Myth-. A simultaneous announcement was made at the hololive Twitter account, and the hololive English Twitter account.[14][15][16] At the same time, Gura made her first tweet, famously consisting of the single letter "a."[17]

Gura's debut stream was scheduled for 12 September 2020 at 2PM PDT,[TZ] although she was 12 minutes and 32 seconds late to her own debut stream due to a technical issue. She was the fourth of the five original members of hololive English to debut on the same day. Over 45,000 viewers tuned in to watch the event, in which she wowed viewers with a rendition of Tatsuro Yamashita's 1980 city pop single Ride on Time.[18]

In a six-month review of her debut, she described being so nervous that she could feel her heart beat in her head, and had stomach problems as she was too nervous to eat before the stream. Prior to the stream, she watched the debut videos of a number of hololive Japan streamers in order to prepare.[13]

The debut events were concluded with the first hololive English collaboration event at 6:35PM PDT,[TZ] in which Gura streamed together with the other four members of hololive English.
