Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦, "Sorcery Fight") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 22 tankōbon volumes as of March 2023. The story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami's Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueisha's Jump GIGA from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankōbon volume, retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018.
Jujutsu Kaisen is licensed for English-language release in North America by Viz Media, which has published the manga in print since December 2019. Shueisha publishes the series in English on the Manga Plus online platform. Two novels, written by Ballad Kitaguni, were published in May 2019 and January 2020, respectively. A 24-episode anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA, aired on MBS from October 2020 to March 2021; a second season is set to premiere in July 2023. The anime is licensed by Crunchyroll for streaming outside of Asia, which premiered an English dub in November 2020. The anime's original soundtrack was released in April 2021.
By August 2022, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga had over 70 million copies in circulation, including related novels, digital versions and Jujutsu Kaisen 0, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, all living beings emanate energy called Cursed Energy (呪力, Juryoku), which arises from negative emotions that naturally flow throughout the body. Ordinary people cannot control this flow in their bodies. As a result, they continually lose Cursed Energy, resulting in the birth of Curses (呪い, Noroi), a race of spiritual beings whose primary desire is to bring harm to humanity. These Curses are shown as gruesome monsters, ghosts, and yōkai.
Jujutsu Sorcerers (呪術師, Jujutsushi, lit. "Cursed Technique Masters" or "Shamans") are people who control the flow of Cursed Energy in their bodies, allowing them to use it as they please and also to reduce its release. High-ranking Sorcerers and Curses can refine this energy and use it to perform Cursed Techniques (呪術式, Jujutsushiki), which tend to be unique to the user or their family. An advanced form of Cursed Technique is Domain Expansion (領域展開, Ryōiki Tenkai), which the users build a pocket dimension of variable size. Inside the domain, all of their attacks will always connect and grow in strength.
Yuji Itadori is an unnaturally fit high school student living in Sendai. On his deathbed, his grandfather instils two powerful messages within Yuji: "always help others" and "die surrounded by people." Yuji's friends at the Occult Club attract Curses to their school when they unseal a rotten finger talisman. Yuji swallows the finger to protect Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro, becoming host to a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna. Due to Sukuna's evil nature, all sorcerers are required to exorcise him (and, by extension, Yuji) immediately. However upon seeing Yuji retaining control over his body, Megumi's teacher Satoru Gojo brings him to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School with a proposal to his superiors: postpone Yuji's death sentence and train under Gojo until he consumes all 20 of Sukuna's fingers so the Curse can be eliminated. At the same time, a group of Cursed Spirits plot a multi-layered attack on the world of Jujutsu sorcery, including the Cursed Spirit Mahito and a corrupted sorcerer named Suguru Geto, who was executed by Gojo a year prior.
Gojo partners Yuji and Megumi with fellow first-year Tokyo student Nobara Kugisaki training them to become sorcerers, but during a mission gone wrong, Sukuna gains full control of Yuji's body, so Yuji allows the both of them to die. Despite this, Sukuna brings Yuji back to life, having grown an interest in Megumi. Aware the Jujutsu high-ups intend to kill Yuji, Gojo keeps his resurrection a secret to continue training him. Yuji meets fellow student Junpei Yoshino, who falls victim to Mahito's manipulations, leading Yuji to swear vengeance.
Gojo reveals Yuji being alive during the exchange event between the Tokyo and Kyoto Jujutsu schools. The Kyoto school's principal wants Yuji dead immediately so schemes to get it done, while the Tokyo students help him. During the event, Cursed Spirits attack the schools, but are fought off by Yuji, Gojo, and third-year Kyoto student Aoi Todo, though Mahito steals three "Death Paintings" (half-human half-Curses), and summons them.
After a mission in which Yuji is able to consume several of Sukuna's fingers and kill two of the Death Paintings with Nobara's help, the disfigured second-year Kyoto student Kokichi Muta, who controls the Cursed Corpse Mechamaru, is revealed to be a mole working with Geto and Mahito. Kokichi betrays them to protect his friends, only to be killed by Mahito. On Halloween, the Cursed Spirits unleash their ultimate plan by releasing several barriers over Shibuya, leading many sorcerers to react. Gojo fights and exorcises various Cursed Spirits, but is sealed away by Geto in a special artifact, the Prison Realm. The events also reveal that the current Geto is not the original but rather Geto's corpse possessed by an ancient sorcerer named Kenjaku.
Yuji and his allies face Kenjaku's forces in order to rescue Gojo from the Prison Realm. During the chaos, Yuji faces Choso, the third Death Painting sibling, and is defeated, only to be spared due to Choso receiving a vision revealing they are brothers. The Cursed Spirit Jogo force feeds Yuji 10 fingers, re-awakening Sukuna, who goes on a rampage that destroys a large portion of Shibuya. Yuji then faces off against Mahito, who mortally wounds Nobara, but with the help of Todo, is able to successfully defeat him for good. However, Kenjaku absorbs Mahito, and using his Cursed Technique, re-awakens thousands of new sorcerers throughout Japan which Kenjaku had been planting for thousands of years, as well as unleashing a slew of Curses on Japan, to usher in chaos and a world of Cursed Spirits reminiscent of the Heian period, the prime period of Jujutsu Sorcerers.
In the aftermath, Yuji and Megumi team up with second-year student Yuta Okkotsu and experienced sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo, with both being special grade Jujutsu Sorcerers, along with Choso and second-year student Maki Zen'in to meet with Master Tengen, an immortal, part-Curse part-human Jujutsu Sorcerer. Tengen reveals Kenjaku's plan to merge the former's consciousness with Japan's human population. The Culling Game, Kenjaku's all-out war between the sorcerers and Curse users of Japan, then begins. Maki goes to the Zen'in compound to collect Cursed Tools she needs, but is forced to kill her entire clan when they lay a trap for her. Meanwhile, Yuji, Yuta, Megumi, second-year student Panda, and third-year student Kinji Hakari, seek out a mysterious woman named "Angel" who can free Gojo from the Prison Realm, as well as also find a way to rescue Megumi's step-sister, Tsumiki, from participating in the Games.
The group are able to discover Angel, however during this time, the Culling Game serves its purpose in acquiring a surplus of cursed energy for Kenjaku's plans, while he also succeeds in killing Yuki and capturing Tengen. When the group attempt to save Tsumiki, they learn she has become a host for a reincarnated sorcerer. Sukuna uses this opportunity to execute his ultimate plan, taking control of Megumi's body. He succeeds in doing so, killing Tsumiki and regrouping with Kenjaku, however the reunited main group are able to use Angel's power to free Gojo from the Prison Realm. Gojo, now unsealed, agrees with Sukuna and Kenjaku to fight on the 24th of December. The main group makes plans and gets ready for the ultimate showdown on the day.
In 2017, Gege Akutami published Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, a 4-chapter series that ran in Jump GIGA from April 28 to July 28. This series would serve later as a prequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, being retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0. According to Hiroyuki Nakano, the chief editor of Weekly Shōnen Jump, Jujutsu Kaisen received unanimous approval in the serialization committee. It debuted in Weekly Shōnen Jump on March 5, 2018.
Akutami stated that Neon Genesis Evangelion influenced the mythological aspects of the series, being also influenced by horror and found footage films. Akutami is particularly a fan of Yoshihiro Togashi, author of YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter, expressing intentions to have an art style as close as possible to his. The author is also a fan of Tite Kubo, author of Bleach, and discussed in an interview with him the similarities between their works. Other manga artists who influenced Akutami include Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) and Yusuke Murata (Eyeshield 21 and One-Punch Man illustrator). The magic system of Jujutsu Kaisen is largely based on Hunter × Hunter, whose fights, in Akutami's words, "rejects emotional arguments", stating, however, that like Daisuke Ashihara, World Trigger's author, whose magic system is also similar to Togashi's series, Akutami is trying to find and develop their own style. In particular, Akutami believes the first chapter was a mix of Bleach and Naruto. Akutami regrets some elements of the first chapter, due to the short appearance of Yuji's grandfather within the story.
In October 2020, Akutami stated that the story's ending and main stages are planned, but that the path between the two remains "fairly free." In February 2021, Akutami stated that the series would probably be finished within two years, declaring, however, no confidence in that statement. Akutami knows how the story for Megumi Fushiguro will end, but not for Sukuna. On June 9, 2021, it was announced that the manga would enter on hiatus due to the author's health issues; it resumed publication on August 2 of the same year. In December 2022, Akutami hinted that the manga would end within a year, stating during the Jump Festa '23 event: "If you accompany me for up to one more year (probably), I will be very happy."

A collaboration with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG Mobile) was announced in August 2021. The collaboration was made available globally, except in Japan and Mainland China, from February 15 to March 15, 2022.

In North America, the volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen were ranked on NPD BookScan's monthly top 20 adult graphic novels list since January 2021. They were also ranked on The New York Times' Graphic Books and Manga bestseller monthly list since February 2021. According to ICv2, Jujutsu Kaisen was the seventh best-selling manga franchise for fall 2021 (September–December) in the United States, and it was also the sixth "most efficient manga franchise" for retailer bookshelves, based on the website's calculations of which manga franchises had the highest sales per volume.
Leroy Douresseaux of Comic Book Bin gave the first volume a score of 8.5/10. Douresseaux praised the series for its characters, plots, settings, and internal mythology, and described it as a "combination battle manga and horror comic book". Shawn Hacaga of The Fandom Post, in his review of the first volume, compared the series to early Bleach and praised it for its world, lore, characters and artwork, concluding that it is a "solid first volume". Hannah Collins of CBR found parallels between Yuji and Sukuna and Marvel Comics characters Eddie Brock and Venom. She also noted similarities to Bleach, Blue Exorcist and Tokyo Ghoul. Collins commended the manga and, regarding its then recently announced anime adaptation, concluded that Jujutsu Kaisen is a "darkly enjoyable action series that's sure to be one to watch out for in 2020". Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network ranked the first volume as a C. Silverman praised the series' use of Japanese folklore and yōkai elements, comparing this and Akutami's art style to Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitarō, but criticized the story for being "very generic". She concluded, "It has the potential to be more as Akutami gets more comfortable with the serialization process and figures out precisely where the story is going, so it may be worth a second book to be certain. But as of this one, it's just okay, making it the kind of series that gets damned with faint praise". Azusa Takahashi of Real Sound praised its storytelling, setting and "surprising" story development, also noting similarities to other works like Bleach, Ushio & Tora or Neon Genesis Evangelion, stating, however, that the series is not only a homage to popular works centered on the battle development, but that it has a "clever composition that sublimates into originality, so you have to be absorbed in it."
The Jujutsu Kaisen anime was awarded "Anime of the Year" at the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, while Ryomen Sukuna won the "Best Antagonist" category and "Lost in Paradise feat. AKLO" by ALI won the "Best Ending Sequence" category. In January 2021, it was revealed that the anime series was the second most-watched anime series on Crunchyroll in 2020, only second to Black Clover, being watched in 71 countries and territories, including North America, South and Central America, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The official music video of the series' first opening, "Kaikai Kitan" by Eve, reached 100 million views on YouTube in April 2021, being one of the fastest anime openings to hit such number of views. In 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen ranked second in the anime category of the Yahoo! Japan Search Awards, based on the number of searches for a particular term compared to the year before. During the same year, the series became the second most discussed TV show worldwide on Twitter, surpassing Squid Game. In 2022, the series won the Tokyo Anime Award for Animation of the Year in the television category.
Micah Peters of The Ringer said that while the series' "focused execution" of shōnen tropes makes it "infinitely watchable", is its "specificity, its personality, its ultra-slick stylishness" what make the show special. He added: "Like with Park's previous work, there is a sumptuous amount of splashy, expensive, mo-cap-enabled animation, delivering on the action promised by the comics". Paul Thomas Chapman of Otaku USA called it a "prime example of average material elevated by excellent execution", adding that it is similar to Bleach and YuYu Hakusho. Chapman commented that Sunghoo Park "puts the "beatdown" in narrative beats", being able to "segue from goofy comedy to chilling horror in an instant", and that he and the crew at MAPPA "make this narrative mutability seem effortless". Ana Diaz of Polygon highlighted the 17th episode, praising the series' treatment of its female characters, different to other shōnen series. Diaz wrote: "Jujutsu Kaisen goes a step further than avoiding gender tropes by presenting a variety of female perspectives. It's not like there's any right way for these young women to deal with the unique pressures they face. The story lets them disagree, and fight for their perspectives and their place". She concluded: "The show's widespread success signals that audiences aren't just ready for change, they're actively craving it. Now, every other creator has the green light to write all kinds of women into their shows".

We have compiled a list of the 20 most powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen’s sorcerer universe so far. It is a ranked list of the strongest characters in JJK anime:
Note: This article contains spoilers about the characters that were shown in season 1 of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. It further includes one manga reference (not a spoiler). We suggest you watch JJK anime Season 1 and the JJK 0 movie to know more about the characters and avoid ruining your experience.
Even before reading this article, you would have probably known who was at the top of this list, and you’re absolutely right. Gojo Satoru is the strongest of all characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. He himself flexes his powers in the first scene he is introduced declaring, “It’ll be fine. I’m the strongest there is, after all”. He descends from the Gojo clan and possesses the “Limitless” cursed technique as well as the powerful ‘Six Eyes,’ which are regarded as the highest powers in the Jujutsu World.
Gojo Satoru wears a cool blindfold all the time, and you can check out the reason behind Gojo’s blindfold mystery here. Satoru is currently recognized as one of the four special-grade sorcerers and the greatest character in the JJK anime.
Gojo possesses a multitude of powers and techniques at his disposal. His infinite cursed technique creates an unseen barrier between him and others. Only he decides what can and cannot touch him. It is useful during fights because the opponents cannot even touch Gojo and feel helpless. We have also seen his Blue and Red cursed techniques along with Purple Hollow. Gojo has enormous cursed energy that he can utilize his domain expansion skill many times within a single day.
We have only seen around 10% of Gojo’s talents and abilities in the anime so far and have yet to see the rest. But with his varied talents and abilities, he stands tall among the sorcerers in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Okkotsu Yuta, who had been teased in the anime for a while, quickly gained popularity once the JJK 0 movie was released earlier last year. After discovering his untapped talent, Yuta gained notoriety and is one of the four special-grade Jujutsu sorcerers, like Gojo, in the anime. Yuta is a special-grade cursed person who was cursed by Rika Orimoto (his late childhood friend). But as was later revealed, he was the one who cursed her. Yuta belongs to a renowned Jujutsu clan and is linked to “Michizane Sugawara,” one of the most legendary Jujutsu sorcerers ever.
Yuta possesses special powers in Jujutsu Kaisen, but he becomes indestructible when he joins forces with Rika. Additionally, he is endowed with strong powers like infinite cursed energy reserves and the ability to copy cursed techniques. Even if a technique is limited to a certain clan or person in JJK, he can still replicate it.
Okkotsu also has the ability to cure others using reverse cursed technique, which is one of the toughest skills to master. Gojo believes that Yuta is one of the individuals who can one day surpass him. Yuta is, therefore, the second-strongest character in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and on this list.
Because of his disdain for those who don’t utilize curses, Geto Suguru decided to follow the road of evil. And without a doubt, because of the degree of threat that he poses to mankind, Geto is regarded as the most notorious curse user of all. Although we weren’t able to see him in action in the anime, we witnessed more of his abilities in the JJK 0 movie. His ability to manipulate cursed spirits only serves to increase his terrifying potential.
He can control all of the cursed spirits he devours after converting them into little orbs using his cursed spirit manipulation technique. For example — In the climax fight with Yuta, he unites a collection of 4,000 cursed spirits into one and assaults Yuta with it. As a result, Geto is solidly positioned as the third-strongest character, as he lived to be the most formidable adversary to sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen. You can read about Geto’s final interaction with Gojo and what the former said to the latter in the linked article.
JJK fans would recall Jogo for being utterly demolished by Gojo Satoru. We assure you that he is more powerful than that. Jogo is one of the special-grade cursed spirits we have seen in the anime so far. During a conversation between Geto and Jogo, Geto states that Jogo’s power is equivalent to that of 8 or 9 fingers of Sukuna, which is a big deal.
Jogo should, therefore, be seen as more than merely a funny foe. He has an enormous supply of cursed energies and can call out ember insects with a powerful stinger and the ability to explode like bombs. Gojo completely destroyed his domain expansion “Coffin of the Iron Mountain,” yet it is still an incredible domain expansion that shouldn’t be tampered with. Jogo is ranked fourth on the list for his immense power and can be seen as a real candidate for the strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Ryomen Sukuna is recognized as the “King of Curses”. Even in the golden age of Jujutsu, all those who challenged him in the battle either failed or ended up dead. Sukuna’s power was divided into twenty fingers and left as cursed items as he couldn’t be eliminated entirely. A portion of his strength is present in each finger.
Now, for those wondering, why is he ranked lower then? Sukuna ranks lower than the other characters because Yuji (more on him below) has only consumed four of Sukuna’s fingers in the anime. We are certain that Sukuna will dethrone others above him as he gains strength soon.
While Sukuna has regained power only worth four fingers, he possesses several special skills and talents. He can employ reverse cursed techniques to grow his limbs back, even repair his heart, and bring Yuji back from the dead. Throughout the anime, he also succeeded in casting special-grade curses and even a deadly domain expansion. And when Mahito (detailed below) touched his soul for the second time, Sukuna terrified and almost killed him. Thus, in his current state, Sukuna sits among the 5 best strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Another special-grade cursed spirit, Mahito, possesses as much strength as Sukuna’s three fingers, from what we have seen in the anime so far. He is still a child and learning when it comes to his cursed abilities in the anime. Among all the other cursed spirits, Mahito is regarded as a clever one. He demonstrated his wit in his conflict with Yuji and Nanami. Mahito is still evolving as an antagonist, and we expect to see more of him in the future.
Mahito exhibits exceptional reflexes during his battle with Yuji. Mahito’s “Idle Transfiguration” cursed technique allows him to alter or transform a person’s soul and is surely a lethal talent. Moreover, he was able to heal himself while fighting and disfigure the bodies of his victims. The main antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen after characters like Geto, Jogo, and Sukuna is unquestionably Mahito.
Along with Jogo and Mahito, Hanami is also a special-grade cursed spirit and one of the prominent characters in JJK. Hanami has an odd impulse to kill people because of the way people have mistreated nature. In a flashback cutscene in the anime, Mahito addressed Hanami’s powers by saying, “you’re much stronger aren’t you?”. Hanami possesses strong skills in the palm of his hand and can command plants at will.
During the Sukuna Finger Retrieval mission, Hanami gave a tough time to all the high school students, including Toge Inumaki, Noritoshi Kamo, and many others. Even after Gojo used his Purple Hollow technique, he was able to escape and survive. He can move swiftly, bears amazing strength, and can endure attacks. Hanami can manipulate plants to the point that he can conceal himself inside and vanish from the scene, which must be his special ability. Hanami deserves a spot in the top 10 because of his extraordinary abilities.
Aoi Todo may not have created the best first impressions in JJK. But fans started loving his character and his chemistry with Yuji, as Todo became best friends with him. In the world of Jujutsu, Todo is currently a Grade 1 sorcerer. Todo evolved into one of the most powerful sorcerers despite coming from a non-sorcerer background. During Geto’s attack in Kyoto, he is said to have fought five Grade 1 spirits and one special grade cursed spirit all by himself.
Todo gained the upper hand in battles, thanks to his ability to combine martial arts with cursed energy methods, which also turned into a supreme power move. With his superior bodily strength, Aoi Todo is a master in hand-to-hand combat. He also has irrational speed. And let’s not forget about Boogie Woogie, a unique attack that Todo uses regularly.
With a clap of his hands, Todo can change the positions of everything within his reach that emits cursed energy using the Boogie Woogie technique. He also knows how to utilize the vast majority of the cursed energy at his disposal and can use Black Flash. As Itadori becomes his best buddy, Todo even teaches him about the topic and how to better harness his cursed energy. The combination of Todo’s physical prowess and abilities make him a great candidate for our list of the strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
After Gojo Satoru, Nanami Kento is currently regarded as the finest sensei in Jujutsu High. He also became Itadori Yuji’s mentor and is a Grade 1 sorcerer. Nanami is a brilliant tactician who uses his 7:3 ratio method to expose an enemy’s vulnerability, which he then exploits with a slash of his sword. When it comes to swordplay and hand-to-hand combat, he is an expert. Nanami is, therefore, ranked 9th on our list and is an interesting example of what a grade 1 sorcerer ought to be.
In his battle with Mahito, Nanami demonstrated the power of his ratio method and his cursed tool. Even though he wasn’t able to compete on equal footing against Mahito, who had a superior cursed technique, Nanami was able to counter-attack using his tactical strategies and even managed to safeguard himself against transfiguration. Nanami made use of his surroundings to assault Mahito effectively. As a result, he is still one of the most powerful characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
The main character of the JJK anime, Itadori Yuji, is making sure to quickly increase his strength and power levels. He had superhuman strength and athleticism even before devouring Sukuna’s fingers, as seen in the anime’s earlier episodes. But after becoming the vessel to the curse named Sukuna, he started to grow as one of the talented students at Jujutsu High. He is one of three sorcerers that Satoru believes can one day overtake him, along with Yuta and Hakari. That reveals the abilities and qualities Yuji possesses.
Itadori has incredible reflexes, superhuman strength, and uncontrollable speed. Along with Todo and Nanami, he is regarded as one of the great hand-to-hand combatants in Jujutsu Kaisen. He learns things quickly and is eager to develop his strength. Fans are eagerly waiting to see Yuji consume more fingers and get stronger (he has only consumed 4 of Sukuna’s fingers for now). Itadori is one of the rising talents in the anime, and with Gojo’s expectations, certainly belongs in the top 10 list of the strongest characters in JJK.
Megumi Fushiguro is considered one of the prodigies in the Jujutsu world. Even though he was just a first-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, he rapidly advanced to the rank of Grade 2 sorcerer. As a descendant of the formidable Zenin clan, Fushiguro inherited the rarest Ten Shadows Technique. But he was given his mother’s second name, so he goes by Fushiguro rather than Zenin. Sukuna was able to fully grasp and recognize Megumi’s hidden potential throughout the whole show.
Megumi possesses a significant amount of cursed energy. He is a master of both weaponry and hand-to-hand fighting. Compared to other Jujutsu sorcerers, Megumi has superior endurance and the power to summon creatures such as the Divine Dog, Nue, Serpent, Toad, and Elephant. His Ten Shadows Technique is powerful, but Fushiguro also used “Chimera Shadow Garden” domain expansion, albeit incomplete, towards the end of the series. Megumi is a great emerging star alongside Itadori Yuji, and we can’t wait to see him grow in Season 2.
The Inumaki clan’s unique “Cursed Speech” technique was passed down to Toge Inumaki, another skilled character in the JJK world. To stop cursing at his friends and other people, he started to converse using rice ball ingredients. His tongue and face were marked with the “Snake & Fang” seal at birth since he inherited the cursed speech. This seal enables him to infuse his cursed energy into whatever he says, and the person has to follow his orders. For instance, Toge saying “blast away” to Hanami caused him to be thrown out of the way. Toge is currently a semi-grade 1 sorcerer in the Jujutsu world.
The cursed speech is an extremely potent technique that needs a lot of cursed power and endurance. Toge has enough cursed strength and energy to combat a special-grade cursed spirit, as shown in the anime. Toge’s unique inherited techniques give his opponents a hard time as it’s difficult to predict. Toge continues to be a fan favorite and is also one of the top sorcerers on the side of upperclassmen.
Despite joining Jujutsu High as a first-year alongside Yuji and Megumi, Nobara Kugisaki totally stole the show in the finale. Just when we thought there weren’t enough of her ferocious moments throughout the Jujutsu Kaisen series, she brought her A-game to the fight. Nobara displayed her valiant strength and powerful “hairpin” technique during her battle with the death-fighting siblings Eso and Kechizu and thoroughly dominated them. Her straw doll technique has multiple sub-techniques, which are powerful when used with her cursed tools – hammer and nails.
In her battle with the death-womb siblings, Nobara demonstrated her tactical brilliance. Despite there being poison in her blood, she was able to turn the situation around with her cleverness. She is a Grade 3 Jujutsu sorcerer right now, but as we all know, she will start moving up the rankings soon enough. She holds the 13th spot on our list of strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Maki was mistreated and rejected by her own family since she was born a non-sorcerer into one of the three major sorcerer families. She left the Zenin clan and started her quest to become one of the greatest sorcerers in the Jujutsu world. Currently, Maki is stuck at Grade 4 sorcerer rank as the Zenin clan controls the Sorcerer society and doesn’t want her to rank up. Despite not being able to see cursed spirits without her glasses and her difficulty controlling cursed energy, Maki has made up for that with her strong combat skills and mastery of cursed weapons.
She was able to fight against Hanami and show off her skills during the Kyoto Goodwill Event. Apart from her fighting skills, Maki is also known to have trained Yuta and Megumi, which showed off her teaching skills. Maki will play an important role in the upcoming seasons, and one should not easily forget her because she’s a non-sorcerer. Thus, Maki Senpai is another strong contender for the most powerful character in the JJK anime and remains in the 14th position.
You may have thought Panda is actually a Panda at the beginning of the anime, but he isn’t one. Panda is a mutated cursed corpse created by Principal Masamichi Yaga of Tokyo Jujutsu High. Panda is an independent cursed corpse with its own pool of cursed energy. He does not rely on the Principal for cursed energy and can even exorcise curses with his physical abilities alone.
Panda is powered by three cores that exist within his body. These are the balanced-type Panda, the Power-type Gorilla, and the third one is Triceratops or Rhino hybrid. Panda is currently a Grade 2 sorcerer in the Jujutsu world.
Panda can transform into a more powerful and swifter version of himself by swapping his cores, thanks to his enormous supply of cursed energy. Only two Pandas variants have been shown in the anime so far, and the third one may appear in the upcoming season. Due to the nature of his body, Panda naturally has strong physical and defensive powers. He is another one of the strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, indeed for his cuteness as well as his fighting prowess.
Choso may have slipped off our minds, as he made only a brief appearance during the Season 1 finale of Jujutsu Kaisen. But he is the elder brother of the death-womb siblings Eso and Kechizu (whom Yuji and Nobara fight in the final episode). We haven’t seen any of his powers yet, but Choso will be a powerful and important character in the JJK universe in the future.
As Eso and Kechizu used blood manipulation cursed techniques, which belong to the Kamo clan, Choso may also have powerful techniques related to blood manipulation. So, it is worth mentioning Choso in our list of the most powerful Jujutsu Kaisen characters. We have placed him in the 16th position on the list as we don’t know much about his powers yet, but we are sure he will climb up as Season 2 releases, and the story progresses.
We were introduced to Miguel in the latest Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. He single-handedly managed to fight Gojo in Kyoto and kept him from going to Tokyo to help Yuta fight Geto. Miguel was seen using a Black Rope, which took his family years to weave, during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. He later moved to the African region and became Yuta’s trainer, helping him better control his cursed energy. Even though he started off as an antagonist in the movie, Gojo persuaded him to join their side and made him a trainer.
Miguel has a great set of sorcerer skills as he was able to hold his own against the greatest sorcerer Gojo Satoru. Fans hope to see him back soon and to know more about his powers in the upcoming arcs. He is already worthy enough to be on this list of strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Due to his Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi Muta was born with an extremely weak and fragile physique. It’s a kind of cursed restriction that has an impact on the cursed energy of a person in return for enhancements or restrictions to their physical appearance. His physical body may have been constrained by this restriction. But, with his vast amount of cursed energy and puppet manipulation jujutsu technique, he uses a mechanical cursed corpse known as Mechamaru. He uses Mechamaru as his delegate to attend the Jujutsu school and complete all missions.
During his fight with Panda at the Kyoto Goodwill event, the use of Ultimate Mechamaru disregarded the frailty of his physical body. It gave the mechanical corpse abilities similar to Ironman (from Marvel) like Ultra shield, boost, cannon, ultimate cannon, and several other abilities. Mechamaru is currently a semi-grade 1 sorcerer, controlling puppets with his cursed energy, and that makes him one of the most powerful JJK characters.
The first time we saw Noritoshi Kamo was during the Kyoto Goodwill event, taking on Megumi in a one-on-one battle. He comes from one of the three big families in the Jujutsu world and is the successor of the Kamo Clan. He inherited the blood manipulation cursed technique from his family. It is a technique for manipulating one’s blood and using blood-infused items.
Kamo used blood manipulation in combination with his bow and arrows to control the arrows’ trajectory as well as many other things. With his cursed technique, he can quickly construct a cage or a trap using blood packets he keeps around. Therefore, this cursed technique gives its user plenty of options to attack or defend against the enemy in different ways.
Noritoshi has a great amount of cursed energy, likely equal to that of a Grade 1 cursed spirit. He can manipulate his own blood to increase his physical prowess and vitality. Undoubtedly, Noritoshi is the next big thing from the Kamo Clan and appears at the tail end of our list as we are yet to see more of his cursed techniques.
Apart from the time he used his electrifying guitar during the Goodwill event. We have not seen any other cursed techniques of Principal Gakuganji. He uses his guitar to send out cursed energy as sound waves. We do not know his sorcery grade (do we need to? He’s the principal after all), but he possesses high political power in the Jujutsu school. He is one of the important characters in the JJK anime, as he even ordered Itadori’s execution.
Gakuganji’s usage of the guitar as a cursed tool was a surprising moment in the anime. We hope to see more of his powers in the upcoming season. And due to the unknown nature of his powers, he is currently in the last position on our long list of strongest characters in the JJK anime.
Who is the 3 strongest in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Currently, on the basis of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and movie, Gojo Satoru, Yuta Okkotsu, and Geto Suguru sit in the top 3 positions in the list of strongest characters.
Who is stronger than Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen?
There is no other sorcerer or curse user stronger than Gojo Satoru in Jujutsu Kaisen at the moment. But Gojo himself mentioned that Yuta and Hakari have the potential to surpass him.
Who is the strongest character in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Gojo Satoru is the strongest character in the JJK anime so far.
That’s it for our list of the strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. We hope you got a clear idea about the powers and skills of the strongest characters along with their rankings here. We are also excited and eagerly awaiting the release of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 to learn more about Sukuna and our favorite characters. Also, for those wondering, we’ve omitted a few popular characters, like Mai Zenin or Miwa, as we haven’t seen much of their powers in action. With that said, let us know who is your favorite character in the anime in the comments section below. Also, are there any characters you believe we should include in this list?
Jeon Jungkook, the lead singer of K-pop group BTS.
Yuji Itadori (Japanese: 虎杖悠仁, Hepburn: Itadori Yūji) is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen created by Gege Akutami. Yuji is a first-year Jujutsu Sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High who is thrown into the world of sorcery after he ate a Cursed Object: a finger belonging to Ryomen Sukuna (宿儺, Sukuna), a powerful Cursed Spirit—a being manifested from Cursed Energy from the negative emotions flowing from humans. With his classmates, Yuji exorcises Curses while trying to honor his grandfather's legacy and save others unconditionally so that when he is executed after eating all twenty fingers, he will not be alone in his death.
Throughout the series, Yuji and exceptional Cursed Techniques are developed as he faces down different Curses and the emotional blowback of his actions. Despite having only practiced using Cursed Energy for a few months, Yuji is tremendously powerful even without having become Sukuna's Vessel. Yuji believes strongly in the value of life and works to make sure everyone he meets, no matter how deep his connection to them may be, receives proper treatment.
In the anime adaptation of the manga, Yuji is voiced by Junya Enoki in Japanese and Adam McArthur in English. The character has been received positively by critics, with many praising his character development though some critics were divided if he is a proper unique shōnen protagonist.
Yuji was created by Gege Akutami. His first name, Yuji, translates to "abundant, help, and brave" with the individual syllables translating as such: "yu" to slow or relaxing, while "ji" to "caring for others." His family name, Itadori, comes from Japanese knotweed, or Fallopia japonica which is used in traditional medicine to take away pain which represents Yuji's caring interior. Akutami has stated if he were to identify Yuji's theme music it would be "Heart ni Hi wo Tsukete" by 9mm Parabellum Bullet and "Itsuka Dokoka De" by Kuchiroro, songs that combine heavy metal with chill jazz.
The idea of Yuji consuming Ryomen Sukuna and having to deal with the demon in the process was inspired by the main character from Masashi Kishimoto manga Naruto, Naruto Uzumaki, who deals with a Nine-Tailed Demon Fox known as Kurama ever since his birth. Yuji was written with the idea of losing several fights across the manga in order to learn from each defeat and become stronger in the aftermath. A major inspiration for Yuji's decision was the television series Breaking Bad. Following Yoshino's death, Akutami wanted to make the main character to become berserker but was unable to do it due to how he would defeat Mahito. Following this arc, Akutami wanted to give Yuji his own special technique but did not find it unique. In the next arc, Akutami took a liking to Yuji's and Choso's relationship and commented the ending of the arc was an homage to Tite Kubo's Bleach. His teamup with Kugisaki was Akutami's favorite battle in the series. Akutami wished for Yuji to be a more popular character, leading to a change of pace after several consecutive battles and be more involved in a chapter about love interests.
Yuji's appearance wearing a hoodie was, in Akutami's eyes, meant to symbolize his hesitancy and indecisiveness. According to Akutami, the end of Yuji's character arc has already been planned in advance with it set to finish within the next two years, though Sukuna's finale is up in air. He also debunked popular fan theories that Yuji's mother was Yuki Tsukumo.
Yuji has been described as "being naïve, thoughtful, and adorable, all while being possessed by an ancient evil." The viscerally of his character mixed with his lighthearted traits are contrasted throughout his arc. As Akutami never intended for his series to be serialized, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 main protagonist Yuta Okkotsu was originally intended to be the main protagonist of the franchise. Similarities between the two characters include their introduction into the world of jujutsu, tragedy, naivety and having become faced with death. Despite their similarities, the two have been differentiated with notability given to how "they carry themselves very differently...Itadori is outgoing, where Yuta is more reserved." In regards to his age, while Yuji is a teenager, early in the series he mentions he has been playing pachinko. Akutami was concerned about this scene as it would fit the young demography of the manga, shonen manga, but ultimately left this mention uncensored.
Junya Enoki is Yuji's Japanese actor. He relates having problems understanding the character believing Yuji to be a more complex character than those he associates in other works despite his apparently typical traits. He associated him with Megmumi Fushiguro due to the mysteries they share. Enoki had no problems deciding the appropriate pitch for Yuji, something he discussed with the director. The actor further addressed that Yuji is straightforward, and he also comes across as intelligent due to how he analyses fights. Despite seeing him an standard Shonen Jump protagonist, Enoki had fun voicing him, noting him to have several types of emotions he had to explore too.
Yuji Itadori is Adam McArthur's first work in anime, something he wanted to do ever since he was a child. He heard of the anime series from a friend and got help from one of his agents to audition for the role. The first episode's scene involving Yuji's grandfather's last words at death gave him an idea about how to portray the character. Since his grandfather wanted Yuji to help others, McArthur believed that Yuji is a teenager who likes helping people in need. McArthur used his experience of voice acting classes in the most serious scenes. The actor noted that is too kind to the point he finds him relatable. Following the dub of the series, McArthur look forward to his next work as Yuji.
Yuji first appears in Jujutsu Kaisen as an eccentric 15-year-old who lives with his grandfather Wasuke and is a member of his high school's Occult Club. On the day of his grandfather's death, Yuji is approached by first-year Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro, who inquires about one of Sukuna's fingers that the occult club illicitly obtained. He comes to Megumi's rescue when a swarm of Cursed Spirits attack the school, attracted by the finger. Yuji ingests the finger. Jujutsu master and teacher at the Tokyo school Satoru Gojo tells Yuji that he is intended for execution, but it is delayed so that the world can be rid of Sukuna when Yuji eat all of Sukuna's fingers. Yuji moves into the school and is mentored in Jujutsu personally by Satoru. He quickly strikes up a friendship with his fellow first-years, Megumi and Nobara Kugisaki. He seemingly dies during an altercation with a "Cursed Womb" at a detention facility, wherein Sukuna blackmailed Yuji by holding his heart hostage.
Presumed dead, Yuji continues to work with his sorcery, uncovering his massive Cursed Energy using it for specialized cursed purposes. He strikes up a quick friendship with Junpei, which is derailed when he is killed by the Cursed Spirit Mahito. He also meets the 9 to 5 sorcerer and former salaryman Kento Nanami. After a fight that Mahito loses but escapes, Yuji swears revenge. At the exhibition between the Tokyo and Kyoto Jujutsu schools, Yuji reveals to the world he has survived. Some want him dead immediately, while others side with Gojo to keep him alive temporarily. He strikes up a quick brotherly relationship with Kyoto's third-year Aoi Todo. Alongside Todo, he and the other Jujutsu students and staff repel an invasion of the school by Mahito and Hanami, a Cursed Spirit who is environmentally conscious. During the battle he uses several consecutive punches called "Black Flash," a distortion in space that significantly empowers his Cursed Techniques. By the end of the battle, he and Todo are able to fight off Hanami long enough for Gojo to defeat the Curse. Later, Yuji is assigned on a mission where he comes across two brothers who are both a Cursed Womb: Death Painting with Curse and human blood. He and Nobara kill them, though Yuji expresses regret when he realizes they have physical bodies and that he disrupted their tight-knit brotherly bond.
In October of the same year, Yuji is sent to Shibuya when Mahito and the Cursed Spirits lay one final siege on the Jujutsu Sorcerers of Japan. During the battle, Yuji watches Nanami and seemingly Nobara get killed when encountering Mahito. This causes him to feel incredible guilt and pain. He also fights Choso, brother of the two Death Paintings. After the Jujutsu Sorcerers lose the battle and Suguru Geto (actually Kenjaku) unleashes thousands of Cursed Spirits and newly awakened Jujutsu Sorcerers onto the world, Choso tells Yuji that he is Yuji's older brother, and that Yuji has the blood of a Cursed Spirit. He is later hunted by other Jujutsu Sorcerers blaming him for the attack on Shibuya, including Yuta Okkotsu.
Sometime afterwards Yuji, Fushiguro, and second-year student Panda prepare to fight in Kenjaku's Culling Game between the newly born Jujutsu Sorcerers in Japan. It is also revealed that Kenjaku is his "mother" who created him.
In the light novel, set during Yuji's time in hiding and secret training after being declared dead, he encounters Minato in a park. The boy unknowingly manifested a Cursed Spirit that appears in front of his adoptive parents' home at night. Yuji ultimately defeats it after a lesson from Gojo.
Yuji is one of his school's most powerful and talented students. In high school, he had superhuman strength, reflexes, and overall athletic ability. He is incredibly agile and can run at up to 60.12 km/h. In the world of Jujutsu sorcery, Yuji is also an exceptional prodigy. He has contended with and defeated Grade 1 and Special Grade Curses, despite only having been introduced into the world a few months beforehand. He can contain Sukuna with little effort, and can harm the shape of a Curse's soul in addition to their physical body. Yuji also has a strong durability, being able to walk off stab wounds and beatings. Among his Cursed Techniques are Divergent Fist where the flow of his Cursed Energy has a reverb effect against enemies, guaranteeing a second hit. He also uses Black Flash, a Cursed Energy hit that takes 0.000001 seconds to become enacted. He has used the Black Flash nine times so far in the manga, and up to four times in a row.
Writing for Polygon, Chingy Nea initially stated to finding Yuji to be "a typical shōnen hero meant to appeal to young boys...He’s earnest and goofy like Naruto, incredibly self-sacrificing like Midoriya from My Hero Academia" but went on to acknowledge how "whereas the prototypical shōnen protagonist’s function is to change the world... attempts to reconcile the ideals of its genre with the crushing nature of modern life...this affects Itadori. He is scared to die and is horrified by the world he has wound up in. But it doesn’t make him cynical, and it doesn’t stop him from pushing through his pain to try to help others." The character was also compared to Bleach's protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki due their parallels especially in the his early appearances; such being young fighters who develop supernatural powers as well as evil alter-egos in order to protect people from giant monsters. Comic Book Resources compared Itadori's temptation to use Sukuna as temptation similar to other shōnen heroes such Ichigo's Hollow persona as analysis of how everybody has inner conflicts.
Karen Lu, writing from Yale University, also took note of the way Yuji bent stereotypes about a young, male anime protagonist. She said that "instead of the protagonist bull-headedly persevering through the impossible and ignoring the advice of his friends, Yuji realizes very early on that he cannot save everyone" and commended the way the anime and manga demonstrates that "he actually has to get stronger and suffer death," concluding with the thought that "it’s inspiring yet sobering." Other positive reception has been directed at how Yuji "openly takes on a huge responsibility and sacrifices his own safety to save his friends" and how his interactions with them "overflows with fun energy."
Eric Thomas of Discussing Film praised Yuji's introduction and looked favorably upon changes made to the character in the anime adaptation, remarking that "a scene that adds more depth between Yuji and his grandfather is in the pilot...is important to Yuji’s development, and the additional bits convey the protagonist’s emotions fantastically". He also praised the "incredibly talented voice actor who nail the performance."
When the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released, critics often compared Yuji Itadori to his predecessor, the protagonist Yuta Okkotsu. Critics were divided which of the two protagonists created by Akutami was a more fitting for the protagonist role such as who is more relatable or more original as result of their different characterizations despite having similar parallels. Otaquest criticized the handling of Yuji in retrospective, finding him too simple in comparison to Yuta, comparing him more to Ichigo Kurosaki like other critics mentioned. Sportskeeda came to regards Yuta as a more compelling protagonist that Yuji based on his likable personality as well as his fighting style which he manages to control on his own in contrast to Yuji is often the subject of Sukuna instead.
Yuji was the number one fan-favorite Jujutsu Kaisen character on MyAnimeList (MAL) as of June 2021. In a VIZ popularity poll taken in March 2021, he was voted the second-most popular character in the franchise after Satoru Gojo. At the 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2022, he was nominated for "Best Protagonist" and won a "Best Fight Scene" for his battle with Aoi Todo against Hanami. He also received a nomination in the same category for his battle with Nobara Kugisaki fighting against Eso and Kechizu. In May 2022, manga author Kenta Shinohara did his own tribute to the character of Yuji alongside Yuta and Megumi.
