I am a college student and share a house with other students. We have multiple rooms, and every room has a DirecTV Package. Although over the years, the apartment has multiple screens, the remotes have been reduced to one. However, thanks to DirecTV’s compatibility with all of the remotes in the system, we haven’t had any trouble.

Recently, however, the remote stopped working. When you depend on something universal that you use a lot, such a situation can quickly make your entertainment experience a bit dull.

Once you have installed the application, tap BROWSE FOR TV, and a remote control icon should appear in the top right corner. Tap that icon and select the Receiver Pair or Connect your device. After this, you need to follow the prompts to complete the setup.

Universal Remote & Genie Remote

Get into your car and turn the ignition to the “ON” position after inserting your key. If your car has a keyless ignition system, you can simply push the start button. The Lock button on your remote starter must then be pressed, followed by a five-second delay.

Press the start button once more or turn the key back to the “OFF” position. Do this again three times. If you did everything right, you should hear a “ping” or “ding” sound. The remote fob is currently prepared for programming.

In order for your remote to work with your car’s keyless entry system, you need to program it with either a manual or automatic mode of operation (depending on which type of keyless entry system you have).

To do this: Press the “Power” button on the remote until all four lights flash rapidly in sequence (this means that everything is working properly). Press again until only two lights flash—this indicates the manual mode of operation. Now press once more until only one light flashes—this indicates the automatic mode of operation.

If all four lights flash after the second press, then your remote has been programmed correctly.

If you’re experiencing issues with your remote start after changing the battery, it’s possible that the coolant temperature in your vehicle is too high or the oil pressure is too low. If this is the case, then your remote starter system will be disabled.

To make sure your remote start is connected to your car, head into the dashboard near the driver’s seat and look for a small square-shaped box on the lower left side of the steering column. This is where you’ll find an open port that allows communication between your vehicle and its keyless entry systems.  Make sure this port is open and that there’s no damage to it.

It’s also a possibility that your remote has a second car mode, so it’s a good idea to check it out.

All cars have hood sensors that notice any movement and alert the onboard computer of your car of a problem. If the hood sensor is malfunctioning, the car may not recognize when the hood is open and the alarm may sound while you are driving.

This sensor malfunctioning can also cause your remote starter to stop working. You will have to replace this piece before you start driving again, and it’s best to get this done with a professional or get a new one at any electronics store.

If the remote starter doesn’t work after you’ve gone through these steps, then it’s possible that your vehicle is experiencing a problem with its security system. This can happen if you have an aftermarket remote starter installed or if your vehicle has been damaged in some way.

A fast-blinking green light - the batteries are okay but may need to be replaced soon. A slow, blinking green light or no light - your remote needs new batteries. Remove the battery cover and insert two new AA batteries.

If you need to change other settings that are specific to the receiver, like the receiver mode (for example, if the receiver is set to one of the “other modes” that allow more than one receiver to be used in the same room, you should now be able to use your remote to go into the programming and advanced menus on the receiver.

If your remote looks like this, the procedure is similar. This remote is standard for all Genie hardware made since 2014. Most Genie devices don’t have front panel buttons, so you can’t go that route. If you are able to use your remote at all, you can try the menus. Sometimes holding it very close to the DIRECTV box can help.

If you can’t control the receiver at all, the manual method is the same as the other style of remote:

On the remote, Press and hold MUTE and  SELECT at the same time until the light flashes three times. Then press Press 9 8 1 and SELECT. The remote will flash four times and should now be reset.

Programming the Genie remote for RF is much, much easier. First, make sure the Genie box is on. Then hold down MUTE and ENTER at the same time while pointing the remote at the Genie box. Remember, that’s the ENTER button to the right of the zero, not the SELECT button. You should get a message that the remote is now set for RF.

If you have other settings like TV volume, you should now be able to program them through the menus.

Gemini remotes work differently than other DIRECTV remotes. They use Bluetooth instead of RF. This means easier pairing and better range. However, there are cases when you want to use them in plain old infrared mode. This can be due to interference with other things in the room, or sometimes even in a rare case, with your phone.

Unpairing a Gemini remote will allow you to use it in infrared mode, and will also unpair it from controlling any TV or sound equipment you have connected. Your Gemini remote must be turned on and connected to a TV during this process.

To unpair, simply press the APPS and DASH button at the same time:

Hold buttons down until the lights at the top of the remote blink blue, twice.

Then, find and press the red reset button on your Gemini. It’s on the side of the device.

If you want to pair the remote again, or if you want to pair a new remote, just press and hold the FAST FORWARD and REWIND buttons until you see a message that the remote is ready to use.
