Why directv remote stops working?
I am a college student and share a house with other students. We have multiple rooms, and every room has a DirecTV Package. Although over the years, the apartment has multiple screens, the remotes have been reduced to one. However, thanks to DirecTV’s compatibility with all of the remotes in the system, we haven’t had any trouble.
Recently, however, the remote stopped working. When you depend on something universal that you use a lot, such a situation can quickly make your entertainment experience a bit dull.
When our movie night last week was ruined when the remote suddenly decided to stop working, that’s when I sat down and extensively researched how and when what can go wrong with the remote and what are the best ways to diagnose and fix it.
If the DirecTV remote isn’t working, first try removing any objects that might be blocking the signal from the remote, second by replacing the batteries, and finally resetting the remote and the receiver. If none of these fixes do the job, it is time to get a new DirecTV remote.
The DirecTV Universal remotes have an inbuilt battery level indicator. All you need to do is press and hold button 1 and check for a green light on top of the remote blinks. If the light stays on, it means the batteries are full. If it blinks, that means the batteries have enough power but are weakening. If the light does not blink, replace the 2 AA batteries.
To reset the receiver, press the red button on the receiver and wait for it to restart and see if that resolved the issue.
To reset the remote, try the following methods.
Or you can use the menus on the TV to reset the remote. To do this, follow these steps:
Often, the keys tend to stop sending the right signal because of the dust that builds up in the remote. Cleaning it helps fix the remote. Using a soft linen-based cloth, wipe the front panel of the receiver.
Make sure you are standing 4 Feet away before trying to use it.
This remote is designed to operate with all the DirecTV receivers. In addition, it supports most audio-video devices because of its extensive universal code.
This remote, a recent introduction, allows it to be self-programmed even without line of sight with all Genie devices in RF mode. But they do function with other receivers in IR mode.
The remote may stop working if one of the buttons has been left stuck in the pressed position. To resolve this, first check that the mode on the remote is set to DirecTV. Then, to check if the buttons are stuck, run your fingers over all the buttons. Now try the remote again.
One of the preliminary steps towards fixing your remote is switching between the modes of the remote. To change the mode the remote is in, press the MENU button; after selecting SETTINGS, select REMOTE CONTROL. Among the options available, you should see the IR/RF SETUP. Select that and switch the mode of the controller. Press CONTINUE and EXIT. Try using your remote again.
While switching, you have to switch to RF for the Genie remote and IR for the universal remote.
If none of the steps above work, you can use the DirecTV Application to control your system. Find the DirecTV application on the app store and install it. Once you have installed the application, tap BROWSE FOR TV, and a remote control icon should appear in the top right corner. Tap that icon and select the Receiver Pair or Connect your device. After this, you need to follow the prompts to complete the setup.
If you have tried all these options and the remote still doesn’t work, it is time to replace it. You can do so by ordering online from the ATT shop or through the live chat option available between 7 am and 12 am ET. If neither option works for you, you can also call their direct helpline listed on their website.
You can shop online on AT&T and DirecTV websites or with the myAT&T mobile app.
I hope this has helped you with enough steps to troubleshoot the problem with your remote. It is always a good idea to go over these preliminary steps before you choose to replace the remote.
If you want to take a stab at trying to repair the remote, you can try it by following these steps.
Additionally, you can also follow some simple steps like regularly cleaning the remote, keeping an eye on the battery life to add to the longevity of the remote.
Press both the MUTE and SELECT buttons at the same time. Wait for the green light above the switch to flash twice. Then press 9 8 1. You should see the green light blink four times. Now press LIST, GUIDE, or MENU to check if the remote has started working.
To try and get the volume buttons to work, first, check the batteries and reconnecting the remote to the receiver, next try switching between modes, for example, from AV1 to AV2.
If this doesn’t work, reconfigure the remote and switch modes again. Then, check to see if the volume buttons are working.
Is your DIRECTV remote not working? If your DIRECTV system is new, the remote may simply need to be programmed first. Or if it’s already programmed and not working, you may just need a quick reset. A low or dead battery is often the culprit, so check that out first. Old remotes sometimes get dirty, leading to buttons that get stuck or stop functioning.
If instruction manuals give you a headache, don’t worry ― we have all the information you need on how to program DIRECTV remotes.
Before you keep reading, you’ll need to determine which remote model you own. There are two kinds of DIRECTV remotes ― the Universal Remote and the Genie® Remote. If you’re not sure what you have, you can compare your remote to the images below.
Universal Remote & Genie Remote
Your Universal Remote can control up to four devices, including TVs, game consoles, DVD players and more. This way, instead of keeping up with multiple remotes for multiple devices, you can easily control all of your devices with one remote.
The mode switch at the top of the remote determines which device it’s controlling. You can change the remote’s designated device by sliding the switch to your desired settings (DIRECTV, AV1, AV2 and TV) to control the corresponding device.
To program your DIRECTV remote, follow the steps below for your type of DVR or receiver.
Now that you’ve programmed your remote, you can change your TV’s input source so it aligns with the labels on your remote’s mode switch. If you can’t adjust your TV’s volume before programming your remote, you need to change its input source.

These steps will walk you through the automatic pairing process for your Genie remote. If this process doesn’t work for you, follow the manual programming steps in the following section.
DIRECTV Ready TVs have built-in receivers that function like Genie Minis, so you can enjoy your favorite entertainment wirelessly on multiple TVs. To connect your Genie remote to a DIRECTV Ready TV, follow these steps:
There are a few reasons why your DIRECTV remote stopped working. If none of the buttons are working, make sure you are using the correct remote paired with your receiver, but also check for the most obvious cause, the battery died. If neither of those causes is the issue, ensure you have a clear view of the receiver, with nothing blocking it from seeing the remote.
Your remote or the receiver (or both) may also need to be restarted so they can recognize each other again.
If just one or two buttons are not working, see if they are stuck by dirt or debris that may impede operation.
If you have issues with your DIRECTV remote, resetting or reprogramming may solve the problem. Reprogramming your DIRECTV remote will refresh its settings, especially after losing connection with its receiver.
If you have lost power in your home, changed the remote battery or unplugged the receiver, consider resetting the remote so the connection to be receiver can be re-established.
Have you ever had a remote start not working after a battery change? You’ve probably tried everything already—you’ve checked the wires, double-checked the fuses, and even made sure that your remote start is still connected to the right car part. But it just doesn’t work. What gives?
It’s a common problem, and we’re here to help. Keep reading to find out how to solve this problem and ensure it won’t happen again.
Remote start systems are extremely important for many reasons, but one of the most important is that they allow your car to be warmed up and started even if you’re not in the car, up to 50 feet away.
Their battery should typically last three to four years, but after a while, there are several indicators that will let you know when your remote start is running low. Signal strength loss is the initial symptom. Changing their battery should be a simple way to get them working again, but sometimes it is not that easy.
If you’ve ever had this issue, you know how frustrating it can be. The good news is that with some basic tools and some time spent learning how to repair remote starts yourself, you can try troubleshooting those issues yourself! Here’s a guide on how to fix your remote start so that it starts with ease again.
Many of us have had the experience of having to replace the battery in our remote start. And while it’s an easy enough process, some people get stuck and need help figuring out what to do next. If you want to be sure you did the right thing when changing the batteries, follow these tips.
Sometimes the problem is actually more serious than just a dead battery. It could be as simple as a loose connector or as complicated as a loose power supply cable or fuse.
In any case, we have come up with some tips on how to fix any problems with your remote start after changing the battery. These basic repairs can be done by anyone with basic tools and a little know-how and will get you back on your way in no time.
Check whether your car is equipped with an anti-theft device that prevents unauthorized access to its systems when its doors are locked, such as a keyless entry system or remote start system. If so, make sure you switch off this safety feature before proceeding further.
If your remote start isn’t working after a battery change, there’s also a good chance that it’s because your car is in valet mode. Valet mode is an automatic setting that prevents the car from being started unless it’s been parked with the remote key fob for more than 10 minutes, and will also affect your parking lights.
It’s a good idea to use this setting if you’re going out of town or if you’re going to be gone for a while, but if you’re just using it occasionally and only need your car occasionally, then you can turn off valet mode so that your remote start will work again.
Get into your car and turn the ignition to the “ON” position after inserting your key. If your car has a keyless ignition system, you can simply push the start button. The Lock button on your remote starter must then be pressed, followed by a five-second delay.
Press the start button once more or turn the key back to the “OFF” position. Do this again three times. If you did everything right, you should hear a “ping” or “ding” sound. The remote fob is currently prepared for programming.
The lock button on the remote must then be held down. After five seconds, turn the car off, exit it and press the remote start button. This ought to resolve your issue. More information about how to reset your remote starter after a battery change can be found in this video.
In order for your remote to work with your car’s keyless entry system, you need to program it with either a manual or automatic mode of operation (depending on which type of keyless entry system you have).
To do this: Press the “Power” button on the remote until all four lights flash rapidly in sequence (this means that everything is working properly). Press again until only two lights flash—this indicates the manual mode of operation. Now press once more until only one light flashes—this indicates the automatic mode of operation.
If all four lights flash after the second press, then your remote has been programmed correctly.
If you’re experiencing issues with your remote start after changing the battery, it’s possible that the coolant temperature in your vehicle is too high or the oil pressure is too low. If this is the case, then your remote starter system will be disabled.
To test whether this is the case, you can use a multimeter to check the coolant temperature and oil pressure. You can also run it through a car wash to clean any dirt off of your engine components.
To cool down your vehicle, try to open the hood of your car and let it sit like that for a few minutes. It’s always best to call a technician if your remote car key is still not working, for your safety.
To make sure your remote start is connected to your car, head into the dashboard near the driver’s seat and look for a small square-shaped box on the lower left side of the steering column. This is where you’ll find an open port that allows communication between your vehicle and its keyless entry systems. Make sure this port is open and that there’s no damage to it.
It’s also a possibility that your remote has a second car mode, so it’s a good idea to check it out.
All cars have hood sensors that notice any movement and alert the onboard computer of your car of a problem. If the hood sensor is malfunctioning, the car may not recognize when the hood is open and the alarm may sound while you are driving.
This sensor malfunctioning can also cause your remote starter to stop working. You will have to replace this piece before you start driving again, and it’s best to get this done with a professional or get a new one at any electronics store.
If the remote starter doesn’t work after you’ve gone through these steps, then it’s possible that your vehicle is experiencing a problem with its security system. This can happen if you have an aftermarket remote starter installed or if your vehicle has been damaged in some way.
You’ll need to have this checked out by a professional mechanic.
If you ever had trouble with your remote start after changing the battery, you’re not alone. We’ve been there, too—and it’s an unfortunate situation. You probably just assumed that changing the battery would fix the problem. But it doesn’t always work, and you must be ready for this problem.

A fast-blinking green light - the batteries are okay but may need to be replaced soon. A slow, blinking green light or no light - your remote needs new batteries. Remove the battery cover and insert two new AA batteries.
Dead or weak batteries are almost always the problem with remotes. Even if the remote is working some of the time, change the batteries before doing anything else. Weak batteries can cause poor signals that cause problems. Put in a fresh pair of batteries. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
Does your remote look like the one above? This remote was included with every DIRECTV box from 2003 until 2014 and is still included with some DIRECTV boxes today. It’s easy to reset.
If you are able to use the front panel of your receiver:
If you can’t control the receiver at all, here’s the manual method.
On the remote, Press and hold MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the light flashes three times. Then press Press 9 8 1 and SELECT. The remote will flash four times and should now be reset.
If you have set the receiver to RF mode, you will have to change it to IR mode or set the remote back to RF mode. There’s a comprehensive tutorial here, but here’s the easy version:
If you need to change other settings that are specific to the receiver, like the receiver mode (for example, if the receiver is set to one of the “other modes” that allow more than one receiver to be used in the same room, you should now be able to use your remote to go into the programming and advanced menus on the receiver.
If your remote looks like this, the procedure is similar. This remote is standard for all Genie hardware made since 2014. Most Genie devices don’t have front panel buttons, so you can’t go that route. If you are able to use your remote at all, you can try the menus. Sometimes holding it very close to the DIRECTV box can help.
If you can’t control the receiver at all, the manual method is the same as the other style of remote:
On the remote, Press and hold MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the light flashes three times. Then press Press 9 8 1 and SELECT. The remote will flash four times and should now be reset.
Programming the Genie remote for RF is much, much easier. First, make sure the Genie box is on. Then hold down MUTE and ENTER at the same time while pointing the remote at the Genie box. Remember, that’s the ENTER button to the right of the zero, not the SELECT button. You should get a message that the remote is now set for RF.
If you have other settings like TV volume, you should now be able to program them through the menus.
Gemini remotes work differently than other DIRECTV remotes. They use Bluetooth instead of RF. This means easier pairing and better range. However, there are cases when you want to use them in plain old infrared mode. This can be due to interference with other things in the room, or sometimes even in a rare case, with your phone.
Unpairing a Gemini remote will allow you to use it in infrared mode, and will also unpair it from controlling any TV or sound equipment you have connected. Your Gemini remote must be turned on and connected to a TV during this process.
To unpair, simply press the APPS and DASH button at the same time:
Hold buttons down until the lights at the top of the remote blink blue, twice.
Then, find and press the red reset button on your Gemini. It’s on the side of the device.
If you want to pair the remote again, or if you want to pair a new remote, just press and hold the FAST FORWARD and REWIND buttons until you see a message that the remote is ready to use.
