Why does light travel faster than sound?

It’s because they travel in fundamentally different ways. Light is an electromagnetic wave; it doesn't need a medium and can travel through the vacuum of space. Sound, however, is a mechanical wave. It needs to physically vibrate particles in a medium, like air, which is a much slower process.
