Why wu bai called dt?

I’m also going to preface this by saying that although I read the book that Go Go Squid is based on, I didn’t read the prequels which are the stories between Wu Bai/DT and Ai Qing/Appledog.

Differences Between Go Go Squid (GGS1) and Go Go Squid 2: Dt Appledog’s Time (GGS2)

Halfway through, I decided to watch it purely as a standalone despite still being unable to stop comparing the two. I did take a while for me to get behind the whole robot combat thing. It really made the rest of the team obsolete. I mean, we got to see the behind the scene of the crew fixing the robots and 97 and One/Zhou Yi works so hard but the audience wouldn’t have. It felt kind of like car racing where only the driver is well-known and not the crew that does maintenance on the car, etc. Eventually, I did find it interesting especially the last game where Wu Bai uses tricks he learned from other people to win.

K&K HQ also seem much more lonelier without all the boys. In GGS1, there felt like so many activities were all happening at once. It felt darker, more rustic than what we saw on GGS2. Zhou Yi’s mother was the housekeeper and took care of the boys in GGS1 but Zhou Yi pretty much replaced his mother’s place in GGS2.

In GGS1, I loved the contrast between Han Shang Yan and Tong Nian so the romance between the two was so fun to watch. We have the cool and aloof Han Shang Yan who’s much older and never had a girlfriend before. He’s strict but responsible and mature. Then we have Tong Nian, who’s young, sweet, and innocent. She’s the one who chases after him. The only real complication in their relationship is that she is much younger than him, leading to her mother not being happy with the relationship between the two. I enjoyed the relationship growth between Han Shang Yan and Tong Nian. Tong Nian remained the same whereas we see Han Shang Yan turn from an indifferent and strict boss of K&K to boyfriend material.

In GGS2, Wu Bai is obsessed with Ai Qing to put it bluntly. His whole life revolves around her and he’s a few years younger than her. He worshipped her (a goddess in the field) and entered robot combat because of her. On the other hand, Ai Qing is older and more mature than him but she’s touched by all the things that he’s done for her. However due to her failed past relationship with Solo, she’s more cautious when it comes to relationships. They date in secret and this makes Wu Bai feel insecure. I kind of got bored of their relationship, to be honest. Their relationship problems stems from his insecurity and worries that Ai Qing will get back together with Solo. However, once their relationship became steady, I did enjoyed some of their moments. Like when Wu Bai was having issues with his vision and Ai Qing took good care of him or whenever Wu Bai “kabedons” her.

To be honest, although I did enjoyed watching GGS1, I felt the book was much better so I didn’t really appreciate the show. But after having watched GGS2, I’ve grown to appreciate how good GGS1 was. I felt like GGS1 did a better portrayal of the book than GGS2 which often time felt like it was in a parallel universe. I really only continued on watching for the Tong Nian and Han Shang Yan cameos. Although I was satisfied with the cameos, it still felt a little weird to me because they aren’t the main focus.

Li Xian’s portrayal of Han Shang Yan was so good. Even after re-watching clips of GGS1, I am still mesmerized by him. He’s definitely who I envisioned Gun to be in the book. I really liked Wu Bai/DT in GGS1 too. He was just so cool and unapproachable. The scene where he outed Tong Nian and Han Shang Yan at the blind date dinner is one of the most memorable Wu Bai scenes in GGS1. He really made me look forward to GGS2. But for some reason, his character didn’t work for me as the main lead in GGS2. That magic I felt for him in GGS1 was gone in GGS2. I would also say that I didn’t enjoy Han Shang Yan’s scenes in GGS2 as much as I did in GGS1 too. His characteristics felt a little off for me. I wonder if this is because GGS1 and GGS2 had different directors?

Tong Nian’s cameos were good. She looks gorgeous in GGS2. Although I really liked Yang Zi in the only other drama I saw her in (Ashes of Love), I was on the fence about them casting her as Tong Nian. It’s probably because the GGS1 wardrobe team sucked and they dressed her so horribly. She’s better dressed in GGS2. The author’s description of Tong Nian is that she’s a lolita with an hourglass body. The show hid all of Tong Nian’s attributes and dressed her in really baggy tees, shorts, and knee-hi socks. The baggy clothes made her looked chunky.

I thought they did an amazing job for the casting of Li Yi Tong as Ai Qing in GGS2. If they had went with the original actress from GGS1, I don’t think I would have watched it. That actress is 5 years older than Hu Yi Tian (the actor that played Wu Bai) whereas Li Yi Tong is 3 year older. This made more sense as Ai Qing is supposed to be only 3 years older than Wu Bai. The original actress was not only much older, she also looked much older. In fact, in the flashbacks in GGS1, I found it hard to believe Ai Qing was supposed to be around 18 years old. Li Yi Tong is gorgeous and I really liked her portrayal of Ai Qing. She looked great with both short and long hair. Although she is older than Wu Bai, she gave off a youthful and fresh look. It is only her demeanor that you could tell she’s older.

I was excited for Wang An Yu’s portrayal of Grunt in GGS2. Aside from being part of the K&K Boys, Grunt didn’t play too big of a role in GGS1. But in GGS2, he and Ai Jing are the secondary couple in the show. His first scene with Ai Jing is sexy as heck. Ai Jing is Ai Qing’s older sister. She’s a theater actress and is 3 years older than Grunt. Grunt is an operator who made quite a name for himself before joining K&K. He’s flirtatious and arrogant but you can tell he’s serious about Ai Jing. He has an ex-girlfriend that he dated for 2 years before she dumped him and cheated on him. She begged him to take her back but he refused. She caused all sorts of trouble for him including trying to force his hand by attempting to commit suicide. She finds out that Grunt is dating Ai Jing so she confronts her, even getting Grunt’s mother involved. The first time they break up was because Grunt’s mother came to town with his ex-girlfriend. His mother faked being sick in order for him to spend time with her and the ex-girlfriend. The ex-girlfriend then sends a text message to Ai Jing telling her that they are together. She goes to the place and calls him. He gets caught lying that it’s only him and his mother. The second time they break up was because his mother was in the hospital. Ai Jing insist on visiting her future mother-in-law only to see Grunt’s ex-girlfriend present and receiving the cold shoulder from the mother. His mother even goes as far as to point out their age difference. Finally, Grunt invites his ex-girlfriend over and gave her some pills. It’s either she commits suicide or he commits suicide. She gives up and leaves. I can’t believe this worked. I never read the first two books so I don’t know what all happened but I just felt like Grunt’s dramas are nothing but a clusterf*ck of a mess. I’m trying not to look at this from the view of reality. I don’t feel like Grunt is mature enough to be in a relationship as he couldn’t handled his ex-girlfriend and his mother opposing to his relationship with Ai Jing. The way he handled his ex-girlfriend was kind of dumb. The ex-girlfriend was arrogant in her shenanigans because she had the backing of his mother. I don’t understand this because no mother would be okay with their son being dumped and cheated on. I can only assumed that she had already broken up with him before dating someone else so it’s technically not considered cheating.

On the other hand, I did liked seeing Grunt being comforted by Ai Jing after losing. I felt like he puts up this front about how good of a player he is but with Ai Jing, he’s more vulnerable. Aside from his ex-girlfriend problems, their relationship somehow works for me. I really liked Ai Jing in general. She’s probably the most normal person in the show. One of my favorite scenes in GGS2 is when Wu Bai and Ai Qing got into a fight and Ai Qing got food poisoning. Ai Jing went over to K&K HQ to look for Wu Bai. Grunt sees his beloved woman appear and he’s pleasantly surprised. He tells her as he’s approaching her and reaching out for a hug that she must missed him so much to come. She tells him that she did miss him but she didn’t come for him. She bypassed his hug and tells him to be good. For some reason, this scene really encompasses their relationship for me. Grunt is playful and sweet, a little flirty and Ai Jing loves this side of him but she’s also mature and takes care of business first. In the meanwhile, she still gives him attention and reassure him.

In the season finale for GGS1, Han Shang Yan and Tong Nian got their marriage certificate so we didn’t get to see a wedding scene of the two. I did liked that for GGS2, Wu Bai and Ai Qing got their marriage certificate 2 episodes before the finale. This way, we were able to see their interaction after marriage. And lucky for us viewers, GGS2 gave us not only the wedding of Wu Bai and Ai Qing but it became a joint wedding with Han Shang Yan and Tong Nian as well. Both brides look stunning and their grooms look equally handsome.

Although GGS2 had some moments that was boring and all the inconsistencies was unbearable at certain points, it was still pretty enjoyable. I may re-watch my favorite parts once in a while. But Wu Bai and Ai Qing’s story made me now want to read God’s Left Hand and Fish Playing While Trapped in a Secret Room. And I must re-read Stewed Squid with Honey, it’s such a good book. Han Shang Yan is hot in the drama but he’s much more sexy in the book.

How Old is Wu Bai (DT), Ai Qing (Appledog), Shen Zhe (Grunt), and Ai Jing?

In Episode 14, Wu Bai and his grandfather visits Ai Qing and her family for the Lunar New Year. Unfortunately, Ai Qing’s grandmother had invited a blind date guest to meet with her granddaughters. Grandfather Han asked him how old he is and when he tells him that he’s 35, Grandfather Han remarked that Wu Bai is 10 years younger. Thus, Wu Bai is 25. He did have a birthday afterward where he wanted to spend time alone with Ai Qing but his team threw him a surprise birthday party. So Wu Bai would be 26.

In Episode 32, Wu Bai’s grandfather and Ai Qing’s father sit down for a formal “meet the parents” dinner with Wu Bai and Ai Qing. Grandfather Han asked Ai Qing’s father what he thinks about the two getting married. Ai Qing’s father asked if they are okay with Ai Qing being older than Wu Bai. Grandfather Han remarked, “As the saying goes, a wife 3 years older than a husband ensures a richer life.” So Ai Qing is 3 years older than Wu Bai. Although Wu Bai is technically now 26, I still believe Ai Qing is 28. The reason why is because he was 15 years old when he fell in love with her and even after the birthday, he still talk about loving her for 10 years. Thus, I reasoned that the show forgot they threw him a birthday party.

In Episode 5 at the Guangzhou competition, Shen Zhe and Ai Jing are hanging out playing games on their phone. 97 interrupts them looking for Wu Bai. Ai Jing then asked Shen Zhe if something is wrong with Wu Bai. Shen Zhe tells her that Wu Bai has a crush on someone and that the person is not only pretty but she’s older than him. Ai Jing tells him he’s old-fashioned and there’s nothing wrong with an older woman dating a younger man. So Shen Zhe asked her if she would consider dating a younger man. She tells him it depends on how much younger he is. Shen Zhe automatically responds back, 3 years. So we know that Shen Zhe is 3 years younger than Ai Jing.

Ai Jing is Ai Qing’s elder sister. In Episode 36, after Father Ai met with both Shen Zhe’s mother and Wu Bai’s parents, he tells the girls that he had thought all night. He asked if they would both consider getting married at the same time. Ai Jing tells him she’s not ready. He tells her that she’s the a year older than Ai Qing. So we now know that they are only a year apart.

It means Dog's Time, or more specifically, Appledog's time. Thus his name is DT. Wu Bai continues: "This is my generation; this is your generation." A nod to the Chinese title. Also, Wu Bai is ready to propose!
