Nov 29 (Reuters) - Germany will be looking to win a fifth World Cup at the tournament in Qatar, which began on Nov. 20 and will run through to Dec. 18. Here is what you need to know about their squad:

* Teams were able to select up to 26 players for this year's World Cup after FIFA increased the maximum limit for squads by three in June, citing the unusual timing of the tournament as well as the impact of COVID-19.

* Coaches had until Nov. 14 to decide on their final list of 26 players.

Germany's squad was announced on Nov. 10.

* Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Keeper Neuer remains first choice for a fourth consecutive World Cup.

* Defenders: Matthias Ginter (Freiburg), Antonio Ruediger (Real Madrid), Niklas Suele (Borussia Dortmund), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Thilo Kehrer (West Ham United), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Lukas Klostermann, Armel Bella Kotchap (Southampton), Christian Guenter (Freiburg).

Real Madrid's Ruediger has been tasked with plugging the holes in a leaky backline which kept just one clean sheet in eight matches prior to the World Cup this year.

* Midfielders: Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Mueller (all Bayern Munich), Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund), Mario Goetze (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Bayern Munich have provided a strong midfield core with Mueller, Musiala, Sane, Gnabry, Goretzka and Kimmich. Goetze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, returned to the squad.

* Forwards: Kai Havertz (Chelsea), Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund), Niklas Fuellkrug (Werder Bremen), Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund).

Chelsea's Havertz has provided Germany with an option up front in the absence of RB Leipzig's Timo Werner, with Fuellkrug giving Flick an alternative off the bench.

* Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus and defender Mats Hummels miss out, with the former failing to recover from injury in time.

* Timo Werner was ruled out of the World Cup due to an ankle injury.

* Germany lost 2-1 to Japan in their opening Group E game, before drawing 1-1 with Spain.

* They take on Costa Rica in their final group match.

* Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Paris St Germain)

* Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin), Antonio Ruediger (Chelsea), Niklas Suele (Bayern Munich)

* Midfielders: Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Paris St Germain), Leon Goretzka (Schalke 04), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Sebastian Rudy (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

* Forwards: Mario Gomez (VfB Stuttgart), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

The 26 players in the Germany squad for the 2022 World Cup have been confirmed by head coach Hansi Flick.

Germany go into the World Cup as the 6th favorites (+1000) to win the trophy as the four-time world champions play at a major international tournament under a manager other than Joachim Low for the first time since the 2006 World Cup (three World Cups and four European Championships).

Though Low has moved on, a handful of longtime stalwarts remain as Flick, previously the assistant under Low, puts his own personal stamp on Die Mannschaft. 36-year-old Manuel Neuer (113 caps) remains captain, with 33-year-old Thomas Muller (118 caps, 44 goals), 27-year-old Joshua Kimmich (70 caps) and 32-year-old Ilkay Gundogan (62 caps) all still very much in the first-team picture.

There is also a new generation of sensational talent coming through the German ranks, with 19-year-old midfielder Jamal Musiala establishing himself as a regular starter for Bayern Munich over the last 18 months, 20-year-old defender Armel Bella-Kotchap hitting the ground running in the Premier League with Southampton this season, and 20-year-old forward Karim Adeyemi being hailed as the next great striker to pass through Borussia Dortmund. 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko, who has been tabbed the next next great striker to pass through Dortmund, was also selected despite the fact he is yet to be capped by Germany.

Peak Germany, this is not – a Nations League defeat to Hungary highlighted that – but it is a more competitive side than was on show at Euro 2020. Under 57-year-old Hansi Flick, the squad feels more balanced, and that famous ruthlessness has returned. Perhaps the best indication of their turnaround came after a muted 2-0 win against Liechtenstein in Flick’s first match in charge: Germany won the home game two months later 9-0 in Wolfsburg.

In personnel terms, Jonas Hofmann is the headline story. The Borussia Monchengladbach winger has become integral at the grand age of 30 and has proved surprisingly versatile, even as a goalscoring right-sided wing-back.

A historic run of four consecutive 1-1 draws in 2022 put the brakes on the hype but, in avoiding defeat to the Netherlands and England, Germany’s confidence remained intact for them to then batter European champions Italy 5-2 in late June.

Toni Kroos’ international retirement after Euro 2020 was unsurprising and unproblematic given German midfield riches, but it was a reminder that the country’s generational shift continues. This will be a swansong World Cup for 36-year-old captain Manuel Neuer (above), and the same may be true for Thomas Muller, Ilkay Gundogan and – if fit, given his ankle injury – Marco Reus. All four will likely stick around for Euro 2024 in Germany, but there isn’t much time left to enjoy this team.

The German FA continues to endure rather than enjoy, though there were smiles when they finally opened their new central campus in Frankfurt (their equivalent of St George’s Park). However, they – as with every FA and team at this tournament – will face stern questions about what they plan to do to raise human rights issues in Qatar, and whether their words will be followed by action. Thus far, it has been down to the players to speak up.

Otherwise, this tournament is almost a free hit. The last one was so bad, and with a home European Championship in two years, Flick & Co are in a prime spot now. If performances are good, and all signs suggest they will be, then Germany can make a step in the right direction by reaching the latter stages.

2 goals: Niclas Fullkrug, Kai Havertz

1 goal: Serge Gnabry

1 yellow card - Thilo Kehrer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka

Hansi Flick coached this side’s spine during his historic time as Bayern Munich manager and was also a crucial backroom figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup win. Tactically flexible and bright as a button, he knows his team and what it takes to win at this level – a scary combination, especially for a team as consistent as Germany.

This could be Jamal Musiala’s tournament. The 19-year-old has been sensational for Bayern Munich, offering game-changing agility and skill. The Stuttgart-born attacker – who was an England youth international after spells with Southampton and Chelsea from the age of seven – is now a must-pick and he’ll surely dazzle.

National managers were allowed to bring 26 players to last summer’s European Championship for the first time at a major tournament, as a special measure brought in due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hansi Flick re-injected optimism into his squad ahead of the 2022 edition in Qatar, with Germany's World Cup record making them among the favourites.

Despite dropping out at the group stages in Russia four years ago, Germany have been one of the most consistent national sides in World Cup history, with a triumph in 2014, alongside two semifinals, and a runner-up spot, since 2002.

With a balanced squad, including an experienced core, and some of Europe's most exciting young players, Flick will be confident of repairing the damage of 2018, though late injuries to star players Timo Werner and Marco Reus have complicated matters.

WORLD CUP 2022 SELECTED SQUADS:Australia | Argentina | Belgium | Brazil | Cameroon Canada | Costa Rica | Croatia | Denmark | EnglandFrance | Germany | Ghana | Iran | Japan | MexicoNetherlands | Poland | Portugal | Qatar | SenegalSerbia | Spain | Switzerland | Uruguay | USA | Wales

It was a case of big names missing out through injury as Flick announced his 26-man squad for the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

For a while it had been known that Leipzig forward Werner would miss the showpiece event with an ankle injury but news of Dortmund's Reus also missing the tournament caused a sense of sadness amongst German ranks and supporters alike.

Wonder kid Florian Wirtz also missed out after failing to recover from injury in time and there was no place for decorated centre back Mats Hummels.

There is however a surprise inclusion in the form of midfielder Mario Gotze who hasn't played for the German national team since 2017.

The World Cup winning goalscorer in 2014 has enjoyed some exceptional form in recent seasons, at PSV, and now with Eintracht Frankfurt, and Flick views him as the perfect replacement for Reus.

Previous World Cup perceptions of Germany were shattered in Russia in 2018 when they bowed out at the group stage. Flick will be under some pressure to wipe that from the national footballing memory.

The likelihood is that of 2018 being a blip in Germany's World Cup record, with a minimum of a semifinal appearance in every other edition since the turn of the century.

Flick has a reputation as one of the best young coaches in the international game, but a Round of 16 exit at Euro 2021 did not do him justice.

The Bayern Munich duo of Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller look set for their final World Cup, but it is their Bavarian teammates who could hold the key for Flick in Qatar.

Joshua Kimmich's excellence as a midfield pivot is the basis on which Germany are built alongside the goals and creativity of Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane out wide.

Antonio Rudiger will underpin the German defence as part of the Neuer-Kimmich-Muller spine and it will be an ability to control central areas that could be crucial for Flick.

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan will partner Kimmich in midfield with Leon Goretzka also drafted in if Germany need an extra body in midfield.

Flick is likely to rotate between Muller and Chelsea star Kai Havertz as a false No. 9 in Qatar, but despite their respective ability to score important goals, they do not have the potency of a Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski as a lead attacker.

Timo Werner had regained his form at RB Leipzig this season, but the torn ankle ligament injury picked up on November 2 ruled him out of the tournament.

Germany travel to Qatar with a FIFA rank of No.12 and they will be confident of making it out of Group E.

Their second group game against Spain on November 27, looks to be Flick's first major World Cup test, either side of facing Japan and Costa Rica.
