How do you handle gossip within a friend group?

If gossip starts, I change the topic. I’ve seen how gossip destroys trust. Once, our group split because someone spread lies. Since then, I avoid taking part. I simply say “Maybe we should ask them directly instead of guessing.” This cools things down and keeps peace in the group.
