You can dial 124# for USSD menu. But if you want SMS, send “BAL” to 123* from your BSNL SIM. You’ll receive an SMS with remaining data balance and validity.

I just use the BSNL Selfcare app now. Way easier than remembering codes. But yeah, SMS to 123 still works fine in most circles.
