How to Calculate Cement and Sand Required for Floor Tiling?

The calculation of the quantity of cement and sand required to install the floor tiles was done by using the following data

Mortar Layer Thickness

Floor Area for tile Installation

Let us Start, Calculation of Cement and sand for installing Floor Tiles on a 100Sqft Area

Also Read: Tile calculator | tiles quantity estimator | skirting calculator

Consider Given Data:

Cement and sand Mortar Mix Ratio = 1:3 mix ratio

Mortar Layer Thickness = 1.5”

Floor Area for tile Installation = 100sqft

STEP 1: Calculation of Wet Volume of the Given area

Wet Volume = Area of Floor Tiling x Thickness of Mortar

Wet Volume = 100 x 0.125 = 12.5scft

Wet Volume of Cement Mortar = 12.5scft

Dry Volume = 33% increase in Wet Volume

Dry Volume = Wet Volume + 33% Wet Volume

Dry Volume = 1.33 Wet Volume

Dry Volume of Cement Mortar = 1.33 x 12.5

Dry Volume of Cement Mortar = 16.625 cft

STEP 2: Calculation of Cement from Mortar Mix Ratio

Cement and sand Mortar Mix Ratio = 1:3 mix ratio

Sum of Mortar Mix Ratio Proportion = 1+3 = 4

Therefore,

Volume of Cement = (1/4) x 16.625 = 4.15625 cft

Provide 10% extra for Wastage

10% extra cement = 0.10 x 4.15625 = 0.415625 cft

Then, Total volume of cement = 4.15625 + 0.415625 = 4.57 cft

1 bag of cement = 1.226 Cubic Feet

Number of bags for 4.57 Cft = 4.57/1.226 = 3.72nos - 4 Nos

The number of bags required for 100 sqft installation of tiles will be 4 nos

STEP 3: Calculation of Sand from Mortar Mix Ratio

Cement and sand Mortar Mix Ratio = 1:3 mix ratio

Sum of Mortar Mix Ratio Proportion = 1+3 = 4

Therefore,

Volume of Sand = (3/4) x 16.625 = 12.468cft

Provide 10% extra for Wastage

10% extra Sand= 0.10 x 12.468 = 1.2468cft

Then, Total volume of Sand = 12.468 + 1.2468 = 13.7148 cft

Volume of Sand Required for 100 sqft = 13.71 cft – 14cft

Let us use cement mortar of 1:4 ratio having 40 mm. thickness to fix these tiles.

Calculation:

1.  The number of tiles required

= room area ÷ tile area

= [(10ft × 10 ft.)÷  (2 ft. × 2 ft.)]

= [100 sqft. ÷ 4 sqft.]

= 25 nos.

The wet volume of cement mortar

= room area × mortar thickness
