Hey! Booking a Home Affairs ID appointment in South Africa has moved mostly online, which is actually way more convenient than the old queue system. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Department of Home Affairs booking website at https://services.dha.gov.za

  2. You'll need to create an account if you don't have one - have your ID number ready

  3. Once logged in, select "Book Smart Appointment" and choose the service you need (usually "Application and Collection of Smart ID Card")

  4. Select your preferred branch and available time slot

  5. You'll get a confirmation with a reference number - keep this safe!

Make sure you bring your old ID (if you have one) and the required supporting documents. The system has gotten much better recently, but slots do fill up quickly, so book as early as possible!

Just went through this process last month! The online booking system is definitely the way to go, but here are some tips from my experience:

  • Book early in the morning - new slots seem to be released around 8 AM
  • Have all your documents ready before booking (ID photos, proof of address, etc.)
  • The eHomeAffairs mobile app sometimes has better availability than the website
  • If you're struggling to get a slot, try smaller branches outside major city centers - they often have more availability

The whole process took me about 45 minutes once I was at Home Affairs, which is WAY better than the 4+ hours it used to take!
