How to register a complaint in cyber crime?
The official U.S. government portal is the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). You can file a report on their website: ic3.gov. Gather all your evidence first. This includes transaction details, emails, and any suspect information. For scams and identity theft, also use the FTC's site: ReportFraud.ftc.gov. It's also wise to contact your local police department to file a report with them, as they handle local-level investigations.
You can file a cybercrime complaint online through the official government portal: https://cybercrime.gov.in. The steps are:1. Visit the website and click on File a Complaint. 2. Choose between “Report Women/Child Related Crime” or “Report Other Cybercrime.” 3. Register yourself with phone number and OTP. 4. Fill details of the incident (fraud, hacking, stalking, phishing, etc.). 5. Upload supporting documents like screenshots, bank statements, or chat records. 6. Submit and note down reference number. Alternatively, you can go to the nearest Cyber Cell Police Station in your city and file in person.
In India, filing a cybercrime complaint has become easier now. There are two ways:- Offline: Visit your nearest police station or special cyber cell. Carry all documents, screenshots, and proof. File an FIR. - Online: Use cybercrime.gov.in. Register, fill complaint, attach proofs. Tip: Always keep evidence safe (emails, screenshots, WhatsApp messages). Cyber police will need them.
Not many people know this, but even 100 helpline in India accepts cyber complaints now. They will redirect you to the cyber unit. However, the safest and most direct way is through the official government portal.
I actually went through this last year when my credit card was cloned. I filed my complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. The portal is user-friendly. I had to create a login, upload screenshots, and explain the fraud. Within 24 hours, I got a call from local cyber police. So my suggestion: always file online first, then follow up at your police station if needed.
