Is the due date extension for AY 2025–26 applicable to all states in India?
Some people think it is only for states with floods or heavy rains, but this is not true this year. The portal issues were nationwide, so the relief is also nationwide. All states are included in the September 16 extension.
The extension covers all states. Even NRIs filing from abroad who fall under the July 31 deadline can use September 16. There is no restriction based on geography. Everyone under the original deadline gets the new date.
It is a uniform extension. The tax department issues national-level circulars for ITR due dates. Unless they specifically say “only for certain states,” you can assume it is for everyone in India. And here, the press release clearly says it is for all.
Yes, the CBDT extension is for the whole of India. Sometimes, special cases apply for natural disasters in certain states, but this time it was a general extension for all taxpayers in all states and union territories. No region-specific rules were mentioned in the circular.
