In order to develop the Virtual Rotator Cuff Arthroscopic Skill Trainer (ViRCAST), we decided to write plugins to allow the surgical simulation community to use Interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK) with Unity.

My duty was to develop dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) for Haptic Devices to communicate with Interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK) through Unity.

Because of this, I had to learn what DLLs were, how to create and use them with unity.

This article is to show the steps I used to develop and use DLLs in Unity before writing the Haptic Device DLLs to communicate with Interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK) through Unity.

In this article, I discuss the use of DLLs to run C/C++ Code from Unity. Plugins are used to include the code created outside the Unity platform. The aim behind this was to integrate C/C++ code with Unity in order to allow us to call C/C++ written functions from a Unity C# script. In addition to plugins, I will also explain the use of Dynamic Link Library (DLL). These libraries contain code and data that can be used by third-party applications such as Unity. Using a DLL, promotes code reuse and efficient memory usage. This technique also allows modularization of Unity programs into separate components that can each be used as needed. This article also presents a simple way of using an external compiler to compile my native C/C++ code then add the resulting DLL to the Unity project.

Unity is a game engine and an integrated development tool used to develop programs and applications such as simulations, real-time 3D animations and video games. Unity provides multiple functions to support all types of game development needs such as shaders, network, map and terrain manipulation, physics engine, and video/audio. Although Unity produces the applications based on C# scripts, it also offers two kinds of plugins that allow users to include code created outside and written using a different programming language. Unity offers two types of plugins: Managed plug-ins and Native plug-ins.
