In the world run by social media and influencer marketing, KOL or Key Opinion Leader and KOC or Key Opinion Consumer became parts of the brands’ online marketing strategy to get brand awareness and recognition from their target audiences. Although they both appear with products or services, actually these two are completely different things.

What Are KOL and KOC?

KOL is a famous person whose appearance with products is valued by a broader audience. KOLs are individuals who are trusted and respected specifically their status quo or specialties. People who are already famous like movie stars, models, celebutants, or people who made themselves famous on social media platforms are paid to promote products and services on their social media and brands’ social media.

KOC is much different from the KOL. KOCs are valued by their opinion from their experience with products and services. They are people of no status quo, which makes them relatable to the audience. The size of KOCs’ followers may be smaller — merely a thousand — compared to KOL but KOCs’ followers are very loyal. Do not underestimate the power of KOCs, their opinions have quite an impact on their followers which could determine their followers’ decision to buy products or services.

The Differences between KOL and KOC

1. Initiative

KOLs are often contacted and offered cash or product incentives by brands to promote products and services. KOCs, on the other hand, usually contact brands to test or review products that they are interested in.

2. Audience

The number of followers is important for KOLs, and it is used to categorize them; Nano-Influencers (1K-10K), Micro-Influencers (10K-50K) to Celebrities (1M+).

The audience size doesn’t bother KOCs.

3. Authenticity

KOCs are also end-users but what makes them different from other end-users is they have their own blogs or vlogs to express their opinions and views on the products they use. In comparison, KOLs are paid to collaborate with brands, hence the authenticity is weaker than KOC.

The Rise of KOC

Suvita Charanwong, Managing Director of an influencer marketing automation platform called Tellscore, talked about the changing of marketing and influencer trends. In the early 2010s, brands often hired good-looking people such as KOLs to promote their products online, but now brands are willing to spend their money on KOCs because the KOCs are much more relatable and approachable are the keys to the heart of consumers.

“The online marketing trend in Thailand became more niche which makes it pretty interesting. Products such as power strip, financial products, etc. are very difficult to explain but the KOCs can speak plainly and help their audiences to understand the function of the products.” She stated in her interview with marketingoops.com.

She also continued in her interview that consumers used to be the listeners who had to listen to what brands said. In the past few years, consumers became the speakers so brands had to change their tactics and approach to these consumers — especially, the consumers who have followers and brand loyalty — so the brands can stay relevant or become relevant.

Brands invest their money more on KOCs, for example, they approve a 200,000 THB budget for online marketing to invest in 2,000 KOCs to review their products which compared to KOLs they are cheaper because a KOL could cost as much as 2,000 KOCs or even more.

It began with 2008’s “Iron Man,” a film that introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark with the hint that he could be part of something greater. Thirty-one films later, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still being told, albeit with various tributaries and detours that introduce new characters and new worlds that may or may not cross paths one day. Each film in the MCU stands on its own to some degree, but like building blocks, they all connect as part of one interconnected universe. And in that way, watching the Marvel movies in order tells one grand story.

There are a couple of different ways to watch the MCU movies in order, but below we run down how to watch the Marvel films in chronological and release date order. Indeed, some films like “Captain Marvel” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” are full-on prequels set in the 1990s and 1940s, respectively, and with such intricate storytelling throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, you can watch the films chronologically and it all continues to make sense.

Most of the Marvel movies take place one right after the other, but others chronicle events that occur concurrently with events from other films. For instance, the events of “Thor: Ragnarok” take place around the same time as the events of “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” with both films leading up to “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The MCU story is divided up into three phases that make up The Infinity Saga, a story that begins with “Iron Man” and ends with “Avengers: Endgame.” Phase Four began with the Disney+ series “WandaVision” and also includes “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi” and concludes with “Wakanda Forever.” Phase Five begins with “Ant-Man 3.”

“Thor: Love and Thunder,” takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and appears to be set some duration after “Doctor Strange 2” and “Ms. Marvel.”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” takes place after “Eternals” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” but concurrent with the events of “Thor 4” and not long before the events of the upcoming “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantmania” takes place in a post-“Avengers: Endgame” world, and possibly at the same time as the upcoming sequel “The Marvels.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” takes place at an unspecified time after the events of “Thor: Love and Thunder” and after the “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.”

Here’s how to watch the MCU movies in chronological order of events:

Marvel Studios first began independently producing its own films with 2008’s “Iron Man,” and the first few MCU movies were distributed by Paramount Pictures (with Universal distributing “The Incredible Hulk”) before Disney bought Marvel and released every Marvel Studios movie after “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The exceptions are, of course, the three standalone “Spider-Man” films, which while official MCU canon, were released by Sony Pictures.

So here’s how to watch all the Marvel movies in order of release date:

While the overall story makes sense either way, if it’s your first time in the MCU, you should probably start by watching all the movies in order of release date. Not only is that the order in which the films were made, but you can also chart the evolution and refinement of MCU storytelling as Marvel Studios worked out the kinks and perfected how to make a Marvel movie.

But if you’ve seen most or all of the Marvel movies, watching them in chronological order is a fun experience. It doesn’t change any of the story, and it’s definitely weird to watch “Captain Marvel” so early and then wait 20 movies for Brie Larson’s character to ever be mentioned again. But it allows you to appreciate how well Marvel retrofitted its prequel movies into the existing timeline.

WandaVision

The first Marvel Disney+ show takes place three weeks after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and is nestled between “Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” takes place six months after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” but before the events of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Loki

“Loki” begins in the immediate wake of “Avengers: Endgame,” but it’s unclear when the MCU-altering events of the Season 1 finale take place.

Hawkeye

“Hawkeye” takes place at Christmastime in 2024, about a year after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and concurrent with the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Moon Knight

A specific timeline date for “Moon Knight” hasn’t been revealed other than the fact that it takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Ms. Marvel

The teen-skewing “Ms. Marvel” clearly takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and it seems like some significant time has passed since the world was saved.

She-Hulk

“She-Hulk” takes place an indeterminate period of time after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

The “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” isn’t quite a movie and not quite a TV show, so it gets its own little section here. Written and directed by James Gunn, the 44-minute special is set after the events of “Thor: Love and Thunder” — during which the Guardians dropped off Thor after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” — and before the events of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” James Gunn shot the holiday special during the production of “Vol. 3.”

And here’s a list of what’s next for the MCU in terms of confirmed films and their planned release dates.

Almost every MCU movie is streaming on Disney+, aside from “The Incredible Hulk” (streaming on HBO Max) and the three Tom Holland-fronted “Spider-Man” films (“Far From Home” is streaming on FuboTV). But “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is now available to purchase on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” started streaming on Disney+ on Feb. 1. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” starts streaming on Disney+ on May 17.
