In Hindi, depression is most commonly called अवसाद. But in everyday conversation, people also say डिप्रेशन itself, because English medical terms have entered normal usage. It is not just “sadness.” Sadness comes and goes, but depression is a prolonged state where someone feels बिल्कुल निराश, हताश और थका हुआ mentally. Doctors describe it as imbalance of chemicals in the brain, while socially it’s linked to stress and loneliness.
