The old name for it is sal ammoniac. So, it is a very useful powder.

BOF means Basic Oxygen Furnace. It is a main way to make steel.

It's a very big container. They put hot liquid iron inside it. They also add some scrap steel. Then, a pipe blows pure oxygen into the mix. Very fast.

The oxygen cleans the iron. It takes out extra carbon and other things you don't want. This reaction is very hot. It turns the iron into steel. The whole thing is very quick. A lot of the world's steel is made this way.
