An OMR sheet, which stands for Optical Mark Recognition sheet, is a special type of paper form used in board exams (and many other competitive exams) for conducting multiple-choice question (MCQ) papers. It is designed to be read by an optical scanner machine. The sheet contains pre-printed bubbles or circles corresponding to each question and the available answer choices (e.g., A, B, C, D). The student's task is to completely darken the bubble that represents their chosen answer using a blue or black ballpoint pen. The scanner then uses a beam of light to detect the reflectance from the sheet. The darkened bubbles absorb light, while the blank ones reflect it. This difference allows the scanner to accurately detect which bubbles have been marked, translating them into digital data for automated, error-free evaluation. This eliminates human bias and allows for the rapid processing of thousands of answer sheets.
