Windows 11/10/8.1 PCs come with an IME for each language. You can add new IMEs by adding different languages if you wish.

From the Control Panel, go to the ‘Language’ tab. Click any language you want an IME for, and go to ‘Options’. Click on ‘Add an input method’.

Now, browse the available keyboards, check out the preview and then click on the IME you would like to add in your Windows PC.

After adding the new language or input method in your PC, you can easily type in different languages

If you want to toggle between different input methods or Microsoft IMEs, open Microsoft Word and just hold the Windows logo key for long and press the spacebar.

If you are on your Desktop, you can toggle between the IMEs by just tapping on the Language abbreviations written in your ‘System Tray’.

If you’re using a Touch-enabled PC or a Tablet you can toggle between IMEs from the touch keyboard. Click on the touch keyboard icon in the bottom right corner of your tablet and switch between the input methods.

You can also change the input method manually from your ‘Settings’ as follows:

Go to the ‘Settings’ and click on ‘ENG Keyboard’. You can see the list of all added IMEs on your PC. Select the one you want.

Just right-click on the Language Abbreviation displayed in the right bottom corner of your screen and it will open a tab where you can change your language preferences.

From the ‘Advanced Settings’ option, you can adjust the settings like:

Adjust your settings and click on Save. You can restore the default settings anytime just by clicking on ‘Restore Defaults’ in the end.

You can also use the IME mode icon to toggle between the alphanumeric and native language characters.

This post will help you if Input Method Editor (IME) is disabled.

An Input Method Editor (IME) is a software component that enables a user to input text in a language that can't be represented easily on a standard QWERTY keyboard. This is typically due to the number of characters in the user's written language, such as the various East Asian languages.

Instead of each single character appearing on a single keyboard key, a user types combinations of keys that are interpreted by the IME. The IME generates either the character that matches the set of key strokes or a list of candidate characters to choose from. The selected character is then inserted into the edit control that the user is interacting with.

Your app doesn't need to interact directly with the IME. The IME is built into the system, just as the touch keyboard is. If your app has text input, and you intend to support text input in languages that require an IME, you should test the end-to-end customer experience for text entry. This lets you fix any issues, such as adjusting your UI so it isn't occluded by the touch keyboard or IME candidate window.

To enable a great input experience for all users, Microsoft produces IMEs that ship in-box for a variety of languages.

In addition to the in-box IMEs, you can build your own custom IMEs that users can install and use just like an in-box IME.

All IMEs run in the Windows system, which is hardened to stop malicious IMEs and to improve the security and user experience of all IMEs.

Custom IMEs can link to the default touch keyboard and use its layout so that end users can use their IME with the touch keyboard. However, you cannot provide your own independent touch keyboard and certain functions of in-box IMEs for touch keyboards are not available to custom IMEs.

A third-party IME must meet these requirements:

A third-party IME that doesn't meet these requirements is blocked from running.

Also, Windows Defender removes malicious IMEs from the system. Because of this, it's important that you familiarize yourself with the IME coding requirements. For more info, see Input Method Editor (IME) requirements.

Cantonese does not have a widely used romanization standard. With this Cantonese IME, you simply type how you think the word sounds in English letters. The IME will attempt to find out words that match those sounds. For example, you type “failok” to get “快樂”.

Cantonese IME supports fuzzy phonetic mapping. There is no fixed rule to spell pronunciation. For example, you can type “lay”, “nay”, or “lei” to get “你”.

The intelligent guessing works best when you enter two or more Cantonese characters so don’t stop after the first one. Try type “我想食叉燒包” with “ngoshuengsikchasiubao”.

While typing, you will see a list of candidates matching the sounds of your input.

Choose a candidate by taking any of the following actions:

You can use ' to explicitly separates pronunciation of two characters. For example, "long" can be interpreted into "long" or "lo-ng", while "lo'ng" will only be interpreted into "lo-ng".

Press ENTER to type in English (i.e., the letters you type).
