The basic unit of classification is the species. It is the lowest and most important group. For example, all house cats are one species. All humans are another species. Animals in the same species can have babies with each other. And their babies can also grow up to have more babies. This is the main idea. It is the smallest group in the big system of kingdom, phylum, class and all that we learn in school.
