Maharashtra Police is the law enforcement agency in India. The Director General of Police, Rajnish Seth, is in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

It is one of the largest police departments in the country, with about 36 district police units. The Maharashtra Police Department has a strength of over 1 million.

The area of Mumbai was under Portuguese control until 1655. The establishment of a Police outpost in 1661 was the start of a basic law enforcement structure in this area.

The present day Mumbai police were formed by a militia in 1669, which was organized by the Governor of Bombay. This Bhandari Militia was composed of around 500 men and was headquartered at Mahim, Sevree and Sion. The Bombay Province Police were split from the Sind Province Police in 1936. It was renamed Bombay State Police after India's independence. The Bombay State Police was divided into Gujarat Police, Mysore Police, and Maharashtra Police after the States Reorganization Act.

The Royal Alfred Sailors' Home was the location of the Maharashtra Police Headquarters in 1896. The building was finished four years after construction began. It was made to hold 20 officers and 100 seamen.

The Duke of Edinburgh visited the building in 1870. The Duke laid a Foundation stone.

The Bombay Legislative Council was housed in the building. The police department moved in after it was empty.

The Maharashtra Police Headquarters was built between 1872 and 1876 and was designed by Frederick William Stevens. The Royal Alfred Sailors' Home was named after Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who visited Bombay in 1870.

The building was used to house sick Europeans. The Bombay Council Hall was used by the Maharashtra Police until 1982.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was renamed to the State Intelligence Department in 1981 after it came into existence in 1905. The Commissioner of Intelligence is in charge.

The Maharashtra Police launched a new program called "Cop for a Day" on the occasion of 30th Maharashtra Road Safety Week, which allows any citizen to be a part of the Maharashtra Police Force for one day and be associated with different departments within Maharashtra Police.

The Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau is an agency of the Maharashtra government that is tasked to investigate offenses of bribe and corruption.

Force One is a unit of the Maharashtra Police. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. It was formed by the Government of Maharashtra on the lines of the National Security Guard and was commissioned two days before its first anniversary.
