Which is better alo or lululemon?

As a personal trainer, if there’s one piece of equipment I recommend my clients have on hand during class, it’s a great yoga mat. The best yoga mats can make your workout or yoga practice more comfortable and safer for your joints and boost your enjoyment of movement, which carries too many physical and emotional benefits to list, and thus increase the likelihood you’ll commit to the habit consistently.

Naturally, you might want to lean on one of the most popular yoga mats with devout followings to help you reach your goals. Both Lululemon’s The Mat 5mm and the Alo Warrior mat provide ample cushioning, anti-odor and moisture-wicking properties and plenty of room to expand your body — but they also offer starkly different workout experiences. Let’s break down which yoga mat is best for you.

When it comes to yoga mats, size matters. You want to ideally give yourself around 7 to 10 inches of leeway so your head and limbs stay off the ground during your practice.

Measuring a bit over 6 feet, the standard Alo Warrior Mat has plenty of space for those with longer limbs. The standard Lululemon The Mat 5mm measures shorter at 5 feet 11 inches long, so it doesn’t have quite as much room to maneuver. Both the Lululemon and Alo mats are available in 7-foot-long versions for taller people, however, so if you’re particularly loyal to one brand, you’re bound to find your perfect fit within it. Both mats measure 26.4 inches, or 2 feet, 2.4 inches wide, just the right amount of room to allow you to move horizontally in the frontal plane when stepping out at hip width.

Both the Alo and Lululemon mats measure 5 millimeters thick, easy enough to roll up when not in use while still providing enough comfortable padding between your body and the ground. But the Alo’s foam is a lot denser — it’s 35% heavier than the Lululemon mat yet only 4.6% longer, weighing in at 8 pounds in the standard size, while the Lululemon mat weighs just 5.24 pounds. This means the Lululemon is a lot easier to carry around town to and from the yoga studio, while the Alo can certainly tire you out even before you make it to your class.

The denser, heavier foam is also grippier, which means the Alo stays put instead of sliding around, a benefit if you plan to use your mat for plyometric cardio-centric movements, like mountain climbers or lateral skater hops. On the downside, the Alo’s dense rubber also prevented it from lying flat, regardless of whether we laid it down on its polyurethane or rubber side. Even if we rolled it out flat for hours beforehand, or if we pinned it down with a water bottle, we couldn’t get it to lie flat at the edges, meaning we effectively lost several precious inches of what’s supposed to be the longer, roomier mat.

Both the Lululemon and Alo mats are reversible, meaning you get to choose between a slicker polyurethane layer or a cushioned rubber layer ideal for sweatier sessions.

The Alo’s polyurethane layer appears to be matte, but it’s still tangibly slick and smooth. While it offers plenty of support during static poses like downward dog when your body has four points of contact with the ground, it feels a little too slippery to serve as support during balance poses like dancer or bird of paradise. Advanced yogis might appreciate the smooth, firm surface, since it can help you root your feet and toes more firmly into the ground, whereas a grippier, softer layer might throw off your balance.

Both mats claim to be moisture-wicking, but I found that both leave something to be desired — if I use either with the smooth polyurethane side facing up, they feel nearly identical in that after a few beads of sweat, I’ll go sliding right off the mat. In neither case would I recommend the smooth side for high-intensity workouts. (If you do use it this way, keep a microfiber towel on hand to absorb extra moisture while providing a bit of extra traction.)

But when using their more cushioned sides, there’s a clear difference. I’ve been using the Lululemon The Mat 5mm mat for the last seven years, and while my cats have adopted it as a (very expensive) scratching post, it’s more or less retained its cushion and grip all these years. Though my workouts yield a ton of sweat, the rubber side of the Lululemon mat has never stayed damp throughout the duration of a high-intensity workout in the several years I’ve used it. Post-workout sweat stains were barely discernible, and it also felt dryer to the touch throughout the entirety of the workout.

The heavier, denser Alo mat retained more moisture and took longer to dry. While we’d have to use the mat over years to really know one way or the other, it makes us wonder about long-term damage and an overall shorter lifespan.

You’ll want to abide by certain guidelines when taking care of your yoga mat: avoid harsh cleaning solutions, keep weights and workout equipment off the mat, remove any jewelry before your practice so as not to scuff the mat and store it face up to protect the rubbery underside from any jagged edges.

If you’re looking for a set-it-and-forget-it option, you can’t go wrong with the Lululemon mat. The brand suggests wiping it down after use with a natural cleanser and damp cloth.

Related: How to clean gym equipment with these 15 essentials

The Alo mat requires a 1:20 solution of oil-free soap or vinegar and warm water applied to a microfiber cloth — they caution against applying the solution directly to the mat — and then wiping down the mat. While this is hardly an overly involved cleaning process à la a 12-step nighttime skincare routine, it does suggest that the mat is more delicate than the Lululemon. And indeed, when I first received it, I noticed scuff marks on the smooth side even before use. I can’t imagine how beat up it’ll look after years of practice.

I adhered to these cleaning suggestions on both mats and found the grippy polyurethane sides wiped down smoothly immediately. The rubber sides were trickier, since they both attracted dirt like chalk on a school blackboard. Given that Alo’s black rubber underside is so grippy, it attracts extra dust and dirt, so I needed to manually pick off the debris to get it really clean. I didn’t have to poke and prod at the Lululemon rubber side as much, likely because the bright pink color disguised lots of it.

Yoga culture is all about bright and bold hues and patterns — Lululemon clearly takes the cake on this one, with 17 colorways to pick from versus seven for Alo (including three tie-dye patterns, which are more interesting to look at than their monochromatic counterparts). While the sheer volume of colorways and patterns available for the Lululemon mat might inspire a sense of decision fatigue for some, it really offers a chance for practitioners to showcase their personal style (and maybe even match it to their outfit). The colorways are simultaneously unique enough to feel like the mat was designed for you, yet distinctive enough to scream Lululemon in the best way possible.

I selected a pink-ish tone for both mats so I could make an apples-to-apples comparison. While dark finishes hide sweat better (it would have made my life that much easier to select the black option in both, and if you’re really concerned about such things, a dark color is a good choice), I wanted to see clearly how they’d fare against dripping sweat.

My hands were slightly damp during my practice, and that immediately created an embarrassingly dark imprint on the Smoky Quartz (a light dusty pink) Alo mat. The brighter pink on the Lululemon mat better hid the moisture, as I only detected faint lines of sweat throughout my practice. Luckily, the rubber underside of the Alo mat is black, so you can always alternate between showing off your personality (and color preference), and then promptly retreating to a sort of hibernation mode once you flip it over to the rubbery black side.

While these are both quality yoga mats, the Lululemon is less expensive and provides better value for money, more colorway options, better moisture management and lighter weight — meaning an all-around more enjoyable yoga experience that’ll actually make you look forward to hitting the mat. It’s just a better mat at a lower price, regardless of application.

The Alo is a bit grippier and might stay in place better if you’re focused on high-intensity routines, so it’s a reasonable choice for keeping at your home studio. But we’d still give the nod to the Lululemon here, since the Alo’s denser foam construction makes it both more challenging to keep it flat and a bit more stubborn to roll up in a compact, stowable silhouette if you need to stow it away.

Looking for your next pair of yoga leggings or activewear? There are lots of brands out there, but we’re here to talk about two: Alo Yoga Vs lululemon!

These days, many are placing comfort over everything else, especially when it comes to everyday wear. This means that tight-fitting jeans are out, and cozy yoga pants are in, no matter what the season is.

And these choices aren’t just limited to pants either – comfortable sports bras, biker shorts, tank tops, and dresses are also quickly becoming part of the rise of athleisure wear.

Athleisure and activewear have become a pretty big deal recently, and more people are interested in trying them out. But not all activewear brands are the same; some are more eco-friendly than others, some have better pricing structures, some offer better sizing options than others… the list goes on!

So if you’re looking to get some new clothing from either Alo Yoga or lululemon, which one should you choose? In this article, we’ll dive into the differences between the two brands, their best-selling pieces, and more before coming to a conclusion about Alo Yoga Vs lululemon.

Yoga, for most people, is about as trendy as it gets. It’s a practice that’s been around for centuries, but it’s only in recent decades that it has become something that we hear about regularly and see in the gym.

Alo Yoga was founded by two childhood friends named Harris and Marco DeGeorge who wanted to spread good into the world through yoga. And they did just that when they launched their line of athleisure clothing in 2007.

The company started with a simple idea: create clothes that are great for every day, but also make you feel like you’re on your mat when you wear them.

Now, this streetwear-inspired yoga clothing company is an upscale athleisure brand that offers fashionable and durable workout clothes that can be worn basically anywhere: whether you’re out doing errands at the grocery store, grabbing coffee with friends, or just walking around town.

Supermodel and reality star Kendall Jenner is one of the most prominent Alo followers, and she has been spotted lots of times sporting Alo leggings and more.

Alo Yoga is very well known for its chic workout leggings, bodysuits, sweats, skirts, swimsuits, and even dresses. Apart from athletic wear, Alo Yoga also offers workout gear, as well as wellness products

We all know lululemon – after all, their popular workout clothes have taken the world by storm, and the brand is currently considered the most popular yoga and athleisure clothing brand in the world. Lululemon was founded in Vancouver, Canada by Chip Wilson in 1998. Since then, it has become a global brand with more than 500 retail stores.

The company offers a wide range of comfy styles that you can use for your gym or home workouts, such as leggings, hoodies, joggers, swimwear, accessories, and shoes.

The company’s mission is to make people feel good about themselves and their bodies, and it strives to do this by creating products that are both beautiful and functional.

The company makes clothing for all types of activities and for all types of people—from professional athletes to stay-at-home moms who love doing their hot yoga.

If you’re a lululemon fan, you’ve probably heard of Chip Wilson. He’s the founder and former CEO of the company that makes those super-cute yoga pants we all love so much.

He stepped down as chief executive in 2018 after he made questionable statements regarding the company’s name.

Wilson was accused of using racist language when he said that he created the brand name “Lululemon” because he wanted to hear Japanese people struggle in pronouncing it, mocking the way that they say their “L’s” with “R’s”.

According to an article in HuffPost, Wilson also allegedly made a comment back in 2005 that it costs “too much” to make athletic pants that are larger than size 12 – because it costs 30% more fabric to make larger sizes.

Why do these allegations matter? If you’re a conscious consumer, then it pays to know the nitty-gritty background of the brands that you are buying from.

As the two brands offer very similar apparel, there’s almost no difference between their products — both are designed with high-quality and design in mind. But if you’re looking for a cheaper option, Alo Yoga could be the brand for you.

Their prices start as low as $50 to $150, while lululemon is a bit more pricey at $80-$170. Alo Yoga is a way to get in on the fitness action without breaking the bank. Now’s the best time to bust out those credit cards!

While both brands are size inclusive, with sizes from XXS to XXL, some consumers have spoken out about the fact that they would like to see more options. In particular, there is a movement to add sizes in between the existing options.

While it’s not uncommon for brands to only offer a small range of sizes, it’s also not uncommon for people to want to see their favorite brands expand their offerings as well. But still, it’s actually great to see both brands offering durable clothing sizes up to 18, and even going as far as 20 in some of their products for all body shapes and sizes!

If you’re looking for a more modern and fashion-forward brand, Alo Yoga is the way to go. Their designs are edgier than lululemon’s, with earthy neutral colors that you can wear for everyday life.

Not only can you wear your Alo Yoga pieces during your workouts, they’re also designed to be worn as streetwear which makes them super versatile. You can wear the same leggings or top to work or the gym, or even just to hang out with friends!

The second difference is that lululemon typically has a lot more color options on its website. For example, you’ll typically find 20+ color options of their best-selling leggings, while Alo typically offers 10+, with seasonal color variations.

Alo Yoga’s colors usually make use of muted colors and an earth-tone palette while lululemon offers almost everything. They have pieces in bright colors and patterns, neutral, pastel-toned pieces, and of course black, navy and grey leggings.

So, if having a lot of color options to choose from is important to you, we recommend checking out lululemon’s pieces first. With this said, Alo Yoga’s leggings do come in beautiful trendy shades that are often exactly what you want. For example, at the moment, their High-Waisted Airlift leggings come in seasonal emerald green, sage green, light blue, and of course, taupe, tan, and black.

Finally, both brands have beautiful designs, but we like how Alo Yoga’s designs are modern and classic at the same time; they feature unique details that aren’t over-the-top or too trendy.

Lululemon has committed to including 75% sustainable materials in all of its products by 2025, and reducing its freshwater usage by 50%, among other goals. According to the sustainability page found on their website, they’re also planning to offer resale and repair programs by 2025.

While lululemon has made big commitments, it’s important to remember that when it comes to sustainability, promises don’t mean much until they’ve become a reality. For example, their popular, best selling leggings are still made with classic nylon and lycra, and at the moment, don’t include recycled materials.

Despite all of that, lululemon seems set on its big goals, and they are also a part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). The SAC is a network of brands that work together with other stakeholders to improve transparency and sustainability across the apparel industry.

As for Alo Yoga, the company claims that they are “100% sweatshop free and eco-aware”. On the brand’s Sustainability page, they mention that they have a platinum certification from WRAP – the largest watchdog organization for ensuring ethical manufacturing in the world.

Having this platinum certification means that they offer fair pay, stable working hours, as well as safe working conditions. That means fair pay, standard hours and clean, safe working conditions. Alo Yoga has also claimed that they have placed an Alo employee at every factory to “oversee the best ethical practices.”

So, what does it mean to be sweatshop free? It means that no one who works for them is forced to work against their will or in unsafe conditions. It means that everyone who works for them is treated with respect and paid a fair wage for their work. It also means that workers are able to form a union if they want to do so—free of intimidation or retaliation from management.

In addition to this, Alo Yoga has some environmental practices in place, although in our opinion more could be done. At the moment, the brand’s HQ and flagship are solar-powered, they use low-water dyes, and they recycle their waste.

When it comes to a good pair of leggings, there are two main types: the kind that’s made of a soft and stretchy material, and the kind that’s made of a thicker, more durable material. Alo Yoga leggings are the former.

They have an elastic waistband, which makes them extremely comfortable to wear. The fabric doesn’t stretch out quickly like some athletic pants do—they stay in place for a long time.

Alo Yoga offers their leggings in many different colors so you can always find one that matches your style or mood. There are also tons of styles available including high-waisted bottoms with pockets and wide-leg ankle length shorts with slits at the bottom hemline—these options make it easy for anyone looking to mix up their wardrobe without sacrificing comfortability!

So, get ready to take the streets in style with their Airbrush High-Waist Flutter Legging. These leggings have a slightly flared leg for that funky vibe, and a front split so you can show off your new, chunky sneakers. It also adds extra ventilation, which is a must especially when you’re doing high-intensity training sessions in a warm place.

And for those of you who love the feeling of a long, lean body, the Align Scalloped Hem High-Rise Crop 23” from lululemon is for you.

This one comes in three playful colors, one pattern, and four black and grey colors. It is designed with yoga and low-impact forms of exercise in mind, and it feels “buttery soft” with Nulu fabric. It’s also a great choice when you want to get comfortable when running errands.

The high waistband provides structure to your lower half without being constricting. The scalloped hem has a flattering effect on your legs when worn with heels or flats. You don’t have to be a yogi to wear these pants; they look great on everyone who tries them on.

The next thing you need to decide is which top is right for you. Alo Yoga offers a wide range of tops in many different styles, so it can be hard to choose just one.

You deserve to feel like a goddess, and this is why the Goddess Ribbed Cross Crop Top. from Alo Yoga is the perfect one for you. Sometimes, you need something a little more in your life than the same old tank top or shirt.

This crop top comes with a criss-cross neckline for to lift up your chest, and it’s comfy, with just the right amount of spice enough for a date night right after your yoga session. The top comes in a ribbed fabric that will sculpt your body and enhance your shape.

You can show this top off with practically anything: leggings, biker shorts, or even your favorite high-waisted shorts for a cute street-style look. Designed to flatter any size, this crop top is perfect for any occasion—whether you’re going out for dinner with friends or just hanging around at home by yourself.

The lululemon Align T-Shirt is a slim-fitting, cropped tee that comes in 12 colors and fun patterns. It’s designed for yoga and has the added benefit of being breathable and quick-drying. Plus, it’s soft!

With sizes from 0 to 18, you can be sure that this shirt will fit your curves just right. The slim fit and cropped length make this shirt perfect for those who are looking for a flattering workout top that will keep you cool during hot, sweaty, high-intensity training sessions.

The Alo X Tropic Of C Cosmo One Piece bodysuit is perfect to wear with jeans, cargo pants, mini skirts, or cutoff denim shorts. It comes in a red-hot color and a black one if you’re feeling minimalistic.

This top will have you looking flawless no matter what you wear it with. The elevated construction and just-right medium back coverage ensure that your style can’t be beat. And the black piping contrast gives this top a stunning overall effect that will keep people talking about how amazing you look for weeks!

You know what’s the best thing about the lululemon Align Bodysuit?

It’s not the fact that it comes in sizes 0 to 20, which means that no matter what your body type is, you’ll be able to find a comfortable fit. (And if you’re like me, and are always looking for new ways to get rid of your muffin top while still feeling cute, this is a godsend.)

It’s not even the fact that it feels weightless thanks to its patented Nulu Fabric, which is basically magic material. It makes you feel like you’re wearing a cloud—but without being too hot or too cold. You can wear it with jeans on a cool day, or pair it with leggings during those chilly winter months.

No—the best thing about this bodysuit is that it looks good in every single way imaginable! It’s designed for low-impact workouts like yoga; but don’t worry—you can also wear this with your favorite pair of pants or skirt for an on-trend street style look.

Here’s the final takeaway between lululemon vs Alo Yoga: While we recognize that lululemon is the more popular choice, we think Alo Yoga is the better option for most people when it comes to performance wear and aesthetic streetwear.

You’re hitting three birds with one stone: their clothes are more affordable, you can wear their clothes in and out of the gym, and they’re currently the more ethical option.

That being said, lululemon still has some great pieces that you should look into if you love the brand! As for its sustainability promises, you will have to keep monitoring the progress that the brand takes. Lululemon has promised a lot of change by 2025, and we’re excited to see what is next for them.

We hope you enjoyed our analysis of Alo Yoga vs lululemon! For more similar articles, make sure to check out the posts below.

There’s no shortage of athleticwear in this world. From big-name, global brands to boutique retailers, sports bras and leggings know no bounds. With the rise of athleisure, it’s become the norm to see price tags upward of $50 on T-shirts and upward of $100 on leggings.

While I’m a big fan of less expensive workout clothes that hold up just as well as some of the more pricey brands, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Having spent several hundred on both Alo Yoga and Lululemon, two popular (and pricey) athleticwear brands, I decided to do a deeper dive to see what you get for the higher price tags, and which brand would be my next go-to purchase (depending on my next activity and need).

Known for: Stylish athleisure, streetwear, lounge clothes

Price range: $40 to $70 for sports bras; $50 to $100 for tops and shorts; $80+ for leggings and pants

Financing options: Afterpay, credit cards

Where to buy: Online, brick-and-mortar retail stores (California and New York only)

Alo Yoga is a streetwear-inspired yoga clothing company known for super soft fabrics and flattering fits, particularly high-waisted shorts and leggings. As the name implies, Alo Yoga specializes in yoga clothes, although I’ve seen people do other types of workouts in Alo Yoga leggings and tops.

In general, Alo followers love the brand for the wide range of comfy styles, but this brand may not be the best fit for people wanting thicker, more durable workout clothes for high-intensity training sessions.

Shop Alo Yoga

Known for: Performance-driven fabrics and fits, compressive clothes

Price range: $50 to $80 for sports bras; $40 to $100 for tops; $40 to $120 for shorts; $90+ for leggings and pants

Financing options: Afterpay, Klarna, credit cards

Where to buy: Online, in-person retail stores and outlets

Lululemon regularly appears on lists of the most popular workout clothes, and as the brand has more than 3 million followers on Instagram, that comes as no surprise.

In fact, Lululemon is so popular that people often resell sold-out items on aftermarket sites like Mercari and Poshmark for well over market price. People will do anything to get their hands on the latest Lululemon drop, I guess.

Lululemon specializes in laser-focused performance wear. Each product has an express purpose: Some leggings are designed specifically for running while others are designed specifically for yoga, for example. The product description of each item tells you what it’s made for and how that specific product will improve your performance at that activity. This niched-down emphasis is likely what drives the brand’s popularity. The bright colors, flattering fits and durable fabrics help, too.

Shop Lululemon

Alo Yoga and Lululemon both manufacture high-quality athletic clothes. That quality comes with a price — one that millions of people are willing to pay, considering the brands’ cult-like followings and flourishing clothing lines.

Both brands have their pros and cons, but overall, Lululemon comes out on top. Here’s why.

Why? Lululemon makes performance-driven and a wide range of sport-specific clothes compared to Alo Yoga’s lounge- and streetwear focus.

Although Lululemon started as a yoga-wear brand, the company has since expanded into sportswear, streetwear and high-performance athletic wear. Lululemon has yoga clothes, yes, but also CrossFit clothes, running clothes, weightlifting clothes, hiking clothes, swimsuits, loungewear and more. And all of these items are designed with specificity in mind – each and every Lululemon product comes with a “Why We Made This” explanation, so buyers always know exactly what the product is best used for.

Alo Yoga, on the other hand, seems to have more loungewear and yoga-wear than anything else. According to some activewear fiends on Reddit, Alo Yoga clothes are best worn gently, as they tend to be thinner and softer than Lululemon clothes. This isn’t to say you can’t wear Alo Yoga clothes to exercise in. The clothes are designed to hold up during yoga and other low-impact forms of exercise (such as walking and cycling), but you may want to choose something more durable for high-intensity workouts.

Why? Alo Yoga and Lululemon have very similar prices for their items. In general, you can expect to spend $50 to $80 on smaller items (bras, shorts, shirts) and $80 to $120 on larger items (leggings and pants). Coats and jackets can surpass the $150 mark.

Why? While Alo Yoga only offers one financing option (Afterpay), Lululemon offers two (Afterpay and Klarna).

Personally, I’m of the mind that no one should have to finance workout clothes, but these are luxury brands. While Alo Yoga only offers one financing option (Afterpay), Lululemon offers two (Afterpay and Klarna). You can also use your credit card for either brand, but Afterpay and Klarna offer zero-interest financing for those who qualify.

Why? Lululemon has stores all over the country. Alo Yoga only has stores in two states.

I would never, ever spend $100 on a pair of leggings without trying them on first. I know you can return clothes, but sometimes return policies get the best of you, and sometimes it’s just a hassle. Lululemon has retail and outlet stores all over the U.S. while Alo Yoga only has stores in New York and California. If you’re looking to try before you buy, Lululemon is your best option.

Why? Both brands lack in the plus-size department, only offering a handful of items larger than a size 14.

Most Lululemon clothes range only from size 0 to 14, and in stores, there’s usually a dedicated plus-size section. Alo Yoga also only offers up to size 14 on most items, with a few products offering size 16-18 (XL). For both brands, finding plus-size clothes online is difficult.

Because Alo Yoga and Lululemon are both expensive, your purchasing decision should ultimately come down to what type of clothing better suits your needs. If you want to invest in durable clothing that will stand up to uber-sweaty, high-impact workouts, go with Lululemon. If you simply want luxurious clothing for yoga and everyday wear, go with Alo Yoga.

As someone who’s been working out for nearly a decade and who spends the majority of my waking hours in activewear, I would honestly say no. I have drawers full of workout clothes from Target, Old Navy, Champion and other less expensive brands, and I only have a handful of items from Lululemon, Alo Yoga, Calia by Carrie Underwood and other expensive brands.

I don’t wear the more expensive items as often as I thought I would, and I’m still wearing six-year-old workout shorts from Target. Seriously, there are so many brands out there that make high-quality workout clothes for lower prices: This article details several I’ve long been a fan of.

For those reasons, I don’t think luxury activewear is worth it (you just sweat in it anyway), but you’ll never know if it’s worth it to you until you buy and try.
