Aoi is the first friend Nene makes at the academy, so they have known each other for a while.

Nene is sweet to Aoi, she consistently worries for Aoi well being when she is in danger, and shows great care for her, sharing her romantic woes with her.

The manga shows mostly Nene going to Aoi for advice and just a girl to talk about love while Aoi engages with Nene without sharing her own problems. Aoi is guarded, very rarely open with Nene, something that over the years, Nene seems to notice to some extend.

But when Nene says “Sometimes I think that she only gets close to me,” She is, unfortunately, overestimating how much she understands Aoi, most of her interactions with Aoi are with a friendly persona.

When I say ‘friendly persona’, I do not mean Aoi is faking liking her, her friendship and care for Nene are genuine, Aoi only have two people she is attached to at the start of the manga, and Nene is one of them. I just mean Aoi always shows off her cute and cheerful side, even when she isn’t feeling like the ‘cheerful girl’ she displays, her approach is always the same.

Her words here are condescending as hell but she still acts cutesy and friendly: It comes off as superficial.

And a lot of what she says is pretty fake, just things that are what people expect a popular girl to say, things we know she doesn’t believe in or relate to:

“It’s all about experience!” “why don’t you date him just to try it out?” as if she ever dated someone, or viewed love and relationships as something to try out and move along, instead of a concept she is scared of.

But no matter how different from her personal beliefs Aoi’s words are, Nene always falls for the ‘popular girl’ idea.

Nene is confident Aoi is the popular girl everyone loves.

She always pictures Aoi with a cute smile, oblivious in her throne, able to get any guy she wants.

And yet, even with that mental image, Nene doesn’t know what being popular really means.

When Aoi visits the stage, Nene is confused as to why she would ever go here.

Akane is the one who gives Nene an exposition on Aoi, dropping hints that her life is not a sea of roses.

When Nene hears this, she ignores that her friend was put in situations where she was pressured to do things she doesn’t want to and needed to be protected, or how Akane looks troubled that these confessions are a recurring thing: She focused instead on Akane’s devotion.

Nene’s fantasies of popularity are sugar coated, a throne with no problems, so she subconsciously undermines Aoi’s troubles and focuses on Akane’s behavior, which fits her personal reality that being popular is amazing and “Boys will do anything for Aoi, she is so desirable!”

Attention is attention, and since Aoi gets lots of attention, Nene puts Aoi on a pedestal: Give her a life devoid of issues.

Her view is in part Aoi’s fault.

There is truth to what Akane said here:

Nene doesn’t ask about Aoi’s life, or go in dept about her own, but Aoi is the one that consistently plays along, she is the one that keeps the focus on superficial topics and only shows Nene her cheerful and cutesy side. It makes their interactions feel empty: there isn’t a single instance in the manga where they have a talk that isn’t about boys, or school rumors, which are always used to move the plot along, not expand on the basis of their established friendship.

There is a mutual lack of interest to change what they have: Nene because she is content with the way things are and see no need for change, and Aoi because she is Aoi.

With Nene’s view of Aoi in mind, the lack of depth in their interactions, and Aoi’s playing along with the cheerful popular persona, I am not surprised Nene didn’t notice there was something weird with Aoi on the sacrifice arc.

Of course Aoi is so chirpy and playful after being kidnapped by a demon, nothing can phase her! Of course she knows the exit, that’s a popular girl for you!

Nene is being genuine here, she fully trusted her words and reasonings.

The cute and smart Aoi is the only Aoi she knows well, so unlike Akane, Nene fell in the hole.

Somehow, something as big as this betrayal doesn’t change her view on Aoi.

Nene does not spare a single panel to wonder what drove Aoi to act like this. The only Aoi focused thought we get outside a chapter recap is “Sumire looks like Aoi.”

Which clearly has the “cute girl everyone can’t help but love” in mind.

When she does think about Aoi in the severance/rescue arc is always about the lifespan dilemma, not Aoi’s betrayal or why she acted like that.

Her view hasn’t changed in the slightest, just look at the way she talks about Aoi with Katakuri in the red house.

And we know that’s not true.

It was never true.

Nene is still her friend however, she may be oblivious to a lot but she has been by Aoi’s side for years, so she knows more about Aoi than an average person would. She noticed Aoi genuinely loves and is proud of her plants.

She also knows Aoi has a crush on Akane and the knowledge made her discard him from being a possible crush option despite once upon a time finding him cute and worthy of dating.

Nene values their friendship more than any crush: Notice how Akane doesn’t show up on ‘Nene’s type’ list at all instead of dropping to ‘not her type’, subconsciously deciding he is not an option. Aoi’s feelings are more important.

This genuine care and loyalty make the way she overestimates how much she knows Aoi and refuses to change her views very sad.

Nene is so sure they are close and she gets Aoi, that she doesn’t understand that the Aoi she knows, who treasures her and loves plants and can feel distant, is just a fraction of the real Aoi.

Nene consistently covers her eyes when Aoi acts out of her persona and shows slivers of personal problems

She can’t process that her ‘universally loved’ best friend Aoi, and the Aoi that threw her in the trash are the same people. To Nene, the cruel one was a brainwashed fake. That’s it. There is nothing else to it, no reason to think about it.

Which is not true.

We never get hints that imply the drug made Aoi do something against her will. Even after she completely snap out of the drug effect, Aoi owns her actions. She regrets it, deeply, but she also connects with it: She knows herself.

It’s because Aoi wasn’t faking it that she was so scared to apologize to Nene in the first place. She is shaking and anxious because it was her, an ugly part of her she isn’t fond of, but still a part of her: Still Aoi.

Nene saw her more unpleasant side. That terrifies Aoi.

This fear that Nene will hate her once she realizes who she is have been around for a while.

One of the few times Aoi was vulnerable and honest with Nene was in chapter 29, when she assumed Nene avoided her on purpose, because she ‘suddenly’ decided to hate Aoi.

When Nene heard this she is distressed, she genuinely doesn’t like seeing her friend sad, but there is no “I wonder why Aoi would think that?”, no matter how unusual this insecurity is from Aoi’s ‘oblivious in her throne’ image, Nene doesn’t question it. We aren’t shown a single panel of Nene thinking about it: They still don’t have a talk that is about themselves.

But we are shown her thinking about the way Aoi makes people’s hearts race, which happened only two pages later, but is something Nene can easily fit into her established view on Aoi.

To Nene’s credit, Aoi is clearly trying to distract Nene from her moment of vulnerability here, but it’s sad that it works so well.

“Is this a popular girl skill?” Aoi’s personal mannerisms, no matter how distinct are always connected to that of a “popular girl” in Nene’s head. Is not judgemental or malicious, but it shows ‘popular girl’ and ‘my best friend Aoi’ are interconnected in her head.

“Is this how you win men over, Aoi?” She doesn’t even suspect that Aoi isn’t a fan of all this attention, that unlike her, Aoi doesn’t try to ‘win over’ any of the boys, it’s never something she aimed for.

Aoi is aware of Nene’s simple view of her. It’s why she wasn’t honest in chapter 96.

We all noticed how scared she was of Nene’s reaction, she even flinched when she went to apologize

But Nene doesn’t ask for an explanation of why Aoi did it, she doesn’t address what happened, truly just chalking Aoi’s actions as “Not Aoi” and being done with this.

So Aoi doesn’t address it either.

Aoi is super relieved and happy that she isn’t outright hated.

She doesn’t go over her emotions about the events, you can feel Aoi’s walls coming back: She falls back to her friendly and cute persona.

She wasn’t putting hearts and flowers in her speech before her apology to Nene.

And Aoi may be naturally cute, a girl that enjoys cute clothes and using cute speech, but she never talks with hearts and flowers when she is vulnerable and honest about her feelings.

We can see how her speech ties with her vulnerability best when she talk cutely with Hanako on the far shore train to distract herself from her bleak situation, but the moment she shares her honest view on Akane her tone change, she drops it.

Aoi is genuinely happy that Nene still sees her as a friend, but when she say she is fine on chapter 96, she goes over the events without adding any personal thoughts, and change the topic the moment she finish giving exposition. Something Nene accepts and doesn’t question further.

Once more, their talk feels superficial.

Akane behavior changed drastically after Aoi’s rescue (no confessions, no compliments every second, more physical contact, and so on,) because he confronted her, forced Aoi to open up, and listened to what was the problem, doing his best to adapt accordingly: He took her off her pedestal while still showing her the attention and affection she craves.

Nene’s behavior is exactly the same because she likes what they have, and she sees no problem: Aoi is the same Aoi as always or “The Aoi she knows”, so she is also the same Nene as always.

Aoinene CANON Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Character Character Yashiro Nene Akane Aoi Canonical? Fanon Status of Relationship Best Friends FANON Type (?) Femslash Also Known As NeneAoi, AoNene, Aoihiro, YashiAoi, Gardening Duo Tropes • Friends to Lovers• Hair Contrast Duo

Aoinene is the femslash ship between Akane Aoi and Yashiro Nene from the Toilet-bound Hanako-kun fandom

Aoi always tells Nene about the school's rumors about the supernaturals, and Nene believes her since most of the rumors came true. Nene actually doesn’t mind Aoi’s scary stories and actually enjoys them. She also refers to Aoi as the “Queen of Popularity”, since she has better luck with men than Nene. Usually when Nene is busy, Aoi fears that she is just avoiding her and just doesn’t love her anymore. However, Nene assures her she still loves Aoi.

When interviewed about what she likes and dislikes about Aoi, Nene answered that she likes how Aoi opens her heart to Nene. Nene sometimes feels like Aoi is only fond to her which makes her happy. However, Nene dislikes how Aoi is always on guard. Nene notices that Aoi doesn't really say what she's really thinking and Nene feels that it's not fair that she feels like she's the only one talking.

In the Misaki Stairs Arc, Nene was the only one who remembered Aoi due to her ties with the supernatural. She was very upset about Aoi’s disappearance, as no one, not even Akane remembered her. So, Nene gathered the courage to take on the Misaki Stairs rumor. There, Nene met the doll version of Aoi, and was horrified that Aoi had become a doll. When she had the real Aoi back, she was overjoyed.

When the rumor of the “Love Confession Tree” tree was going on, Aoi listened to Nene talk about this a 'boy'(Hanako) who might like her. Aoi was very interested in who Nene was talking about, willing to listen to her go on. Nene is also well-aware of Akane’s crush toward Aoi. The next day, when Nene is about to tell her about Hanako's request, she is instead greeted by a crying Aoi, and Nene immediately asks her what's wrong.

In the Clock Keeper Arc, Hanako possesses Nene so he can get some information from Aoi. He does that by "seducing" Aoi after possessing Nene’s body, and Aoi gives off an uncomfortable expression. Nene worries over the fact that Aoi will think she’s weird and she begs Minamoto Kou to exorcise Hanako. He asks her if she's keeping anything from him with suggestive poses, that even flustered Kou to the point where he couldn't exorcise Hanako. The possessed body lifts Aoi's face and sweetly threatens her to talk before he's about to kiss her. They are only stopped by a loud shout from Akane, who is apparently furious at 'Nene's' actions. Everyone follows Akane, and Aoi is left sitting against the wall with a confused and forlorn air. Notably, Aoi sighs that she "missed her chance to tell again."

Nene encounters Aoi once more in the practice garden, to which Aoi says "I caught you!♥" while trapping her in a kabedon. She tells Nene that she has something to tell her, but was worried that Nene might have started hating her. Nene quickly denies this worriedly, to which Aoi replies that she is relived— although acting very pushy. Aoi 'threateningly-flirtatiously' asks if they can talk the next day, and then cheerily runs off, saying "it's a date!♥" Nene internally frets that Aoi can make people's heart race, attributing it to her popular girl skills. To make up for the incident, Nene takes her on a picnic date afterwards.

In the Hell of Mirrors Arc, Aoi is the one who brought up the 'hands' that followed Nene everywhere. Later, Nene sees the mirror version of Aoi calling Nene’s ankles fat. When Nene asks if Aoi thinks her ankles are fat, Aoi denies it and says she doesn’t think that at all. She became slightly aggressive and asked Nene who said that to her.

Entering the Picture Perfect Arc, Aoi and Akane are the first two characters to be 'crossed out' by Shijima, and Nene shows alarm when the two crumble. When Aoi calls out to Nene later, she shows intense relief that Aoi is alive and well; clinging to the purple-haired girl as she is slightly surprised by Nene's actions. Aoi hands Nene a cookie in her mouth and invites her down for tea while they stargaze.

Aoi was taken away by school mystery No. 6 in the Sacrifice of the Grim Reaper Arc. She volunteered to be the first to greet the 'visitors' in Shinigami's boundary (Nene, Akane, and Hanako). Nene notices that the basket Aoi had woven was lighting up, being worried at first. Aoi appears behind her, surprising the girl with a "Guess who?♥" Nene tearfully greets her best friend, worrying about what No. 6 did to her; Aoi lies and says that she escaped when she saw the three coming. Later, Aoi slyly suggests that the two take some time together to talk about the boy Nene likes.

Upon learning of her death, Nene was visibly devastated.

In Hanako of the Opera, an event hosted by AidaIro on their Twitter, Nene interviews Aoi as a suspect in the mystery. In the setting, Aoi is a Ballerina and Nene is the Novice Songstress. She describes Aoi as "cute, good at ballet, and so popular". The ballerina compliments her on her singing, and relays a rumor that the Popular Singer (Mitsuba Sousuke) and Nene might be getting singing lessons from someone at night. Nene later reflects on the discussion, first thinking that Aoi would have no motive because she had been so supportive, but suddenly wonders if she poisoned Mitsuba in order to make Nene the star.

In Hanako-kun of Magic, Aoi and Nene are both Apprentice Witches who accidentally turned their classmates into candy. Distraught, they ask Sakura for help in reverting everyone back to their original selves.

Aoinene has a good amount of followers, as fans love their dynamic and relationship with each other. Aoi and Nene are extremely close friends that would do anything for the other, even going great lengths to make sure the other is okay. Aoi is notably Nene's supplier of school rumors, and Nene has clearly shown her affection towards Aoi many times throughout the series.

The ship is typically more popular with manga fans than anime fans, because of the scene where Hanako takes control of Nene's body to get information out of Aoi by being seductive. The subject matter that Aoi didn't tell Nene was debatable, as it was never fully revealed, but fans of this ship like to think that Aoi was about to confess to her before Akane interfered. Since it was right after This draws a parallel to a previous chapter, when Aoi is about to tell Nene something with a flustered expression. She never does, as she is interrupted by a shout from some classmates.

Like other Nene ships like Kounene and Sakunene, Aoinene is a more underrated ship. Despite that, it is also the most popular femslash pairing in its fandom since Nene mentions Aoi often and the latter is a relatively popular side character. Hananene and Aoikane are the higher-ranking rival ships for the two, owing to the fact that both of them are the main canon pairings in the fandom.

Akane Aoi赤根葵 Manga Anime Musical Profile Name Akane Aoi Japanese 赤根葵 Alias(es) Ao-chan (アオちゃん) (Akane)(Nene) Age 15-16 Gender Female Race Human Relations Occupation Student Affiliation Akane ResidenceKamome GakuenGardening ClubClass 1-A Status Status Alive Media Debut Manga: Chapter 2Spin-off: Chapter 4One-shot: The Hoodlum and the Four-Eyes, Love and WarAnime: Episode 2 Voice Actor(s) JP: Sato MinakoEN: Emily Neves Musical Asakura Fuyuna Akane Aoi Images Akane Aoi (赤根葵) is a first year student at Kamome Academy's High School Division and Nene's best friend. She is initially used in the plot to introduce supernatural rumors to Nene.

Aoi is a cute, petite girl with indigo hair and eyes. She keeps her hair tied up into two circle sections behind her head. Her bangs are loosely parted to frame her face, and there are two thin, wavy locks of hair that fall past her chest. She wears the regular Kamome Academy summer uniform.

From chapter 101 onward she has begun wearing her hair down and the Kamome Academy winter uniform.

As the kannagi, she is shown to wear traditional attire appropriate for the sacrifice by No.6's assistants. She dons two magenta flowers in her hair, a light teal coat, and a black hakama tied with a large bow behind her. In Chapter 69, she used the hem of her dress as bandages to wrap around Akane's wound.

She was given a protection charm from Teru, which is a woven bracelet with a bell and tassel at the end.

Aoi is a sweet and cheerful person who is very close with her best friend, Nene. Although she claims to dislike scary stories, she continues to delve into them for the sake of cheering Nene up, since she knows that Nene enjoys them. Considering her zealous presentation and continued involvement with the tales, she may actually have some interest in them herself. She is shown to adore romance, as evidenced by her enthusiastic support of Nene's romantic endeavors and enjoyment of discussing crushes. Despite her continued rejections of his advances, she was also rather jealous and upset when her childhood friend, Akane, seemingly began to date someone else.

Aoi is also shown to be good with words and is able to get people to do what she wants just by using a little bit of pressure. She is especially harsh towards Akane, denying every single one of her love confessions all while smiling cheerfully.

Due to her looks, Aoi could be considered the queen of popularity in Kamome Academy, as a female counterpart to Teru. She gets confessed to left and right but easily rejects all her suitors.

Aoi's true personality reveals her to be a person who looks down on others, as stated by Akane. Despite this, Aoi doesn't have a high opinion of herself either, and puts up a constant mask of perfection in an effort to be liked. This backfires as she comes to believe that others will only be disappointed when they learn of her flaws, causing her to become bitter and resentful towards all her classmates, and forcing her to suppress all her negative emotions and traits in fear of being ostracized.

Aoi believes that Akane's feelings are directed towards her fake self and that the "real" her is not good enough for his love. Aoi feels as if she has no one to trust or rely on as all her loved ones deceive her, and no one understands nor cares for who she truly is. Ultimately, Aoi is a deeply lonely and unhappy person.

As revealed in Chapter 64, Aoi has always wanted to go "far away", which is why she agreed to help No.6. Akane claims the reason why she wanted to leave this world was because of the fear that everyone would discover her true, genuine side sooner or later, and turn against her. Although Aoi assumed he was oblivious towards it, Akane admits that Aoi was inclined to look down on people if given the advantage. She refused to confide or get herself intimately involved with others, even if it meant putting on an act around Nene.

She no longer puts on a cheerful façade in the later chapters, but still has innately kind intentions whilst treating Akane's wound (despite cynically saying she hadn't wanted to look at it at all). She also gets very emotional after her argument with Akane, and attempts to run away. When he reveals to her that he had known her true personality all along and cared for her regardless, Aoi starts tearing up, finally understanding that Akane does love her for who she is. As she is left trapped in the Far Shore, Aoi's biggest regret is that she never said "I like you too" to Akane up until the end.

Aoi was childhood friends with Aoi Akane, who first met when Akane's family moved in next door to Aoi's family when they were 3. Aoi said that she didn't like him at first because she was jealous of his tendency to be well-liked. Akane, however, became deeply infatuated with Aoi at a young age. From Chapter 69, it was revealed that Aoi's past consisted of being bullied by her fellow classmates and frequently lied to by her father at a young age. She rarely showed any signs of defiance or sadness when she was picked on by her grade-school classmates, so she didn't have a response to them.

As she grew up with Akane, she began developing a cheerful façade to cover up her actual thoughts, but despite these changes, she was still perceived to be a different species from everybody else. It led to people either putting her on a pedestal or accusing her when she attended Kamome Gakuen. Although Nene and Akane were the two people she trusted, she avoided explaining her personal thoughts or having a genuine personality, which was the part that Akane despised the most. Nevertheless, he still kept true to his feelings for her when he witnessed her crying as kids, suggesting it was the first time he saw her real identity.

Recurring from Chapter 61, it was shown that Aoi could see supernaturals when she first witnessed No.6 and Akane's clock keeper appearance, much to his surprise. She could also see Hanako in Chapter 64, and playfully assumed he was Nene's crush due to her prior knowledge from the Confession Tree incident. Even after the severance was solved and she was brought back to the Near Shore, Aoi is still capable of seeing supernaturals.

Foreshadowed from Chapter 29 when Aoi threatened Nene with a tiny centipede, she was later seen to control a swarm of insects climbing out of No.6's boundary pit. In her kannagi attire, she rode a gigantic centipede that stabbed Akane through his abdomen.
