It is a very old English tradition. In France, we do not have this! It started in the 1600s when wigs were fashion for important men. The fashion ended, but lawyers kept the wigs to show respect and authority in the court. The wig also gives them anonymity. It helps to separate the person from their role in the law. This makes them a symbol of justice, not just a normal person.
