As a Water-type Pokémon, Primal Kyogre is vulnerable to Grass-type and Electric-type attacks. When selecting Pokémon for your Raid Battle lineup, it helps to choose Pokémon that have a Fast Attack and Charged Attack of one of these types if you want to deal as much damage as possible. It’s not necessary to choose only Grass-type or Electric-type Pokémon, but a Pokémon that shares a type with these attacks will benefit from a same-type attack bonus, which will allow these attacks to deal an additional 20% damage. Note that Primal Kyogre might use Blizzard, which can knock out your Grass-type Pokémon with a single hit. If you’re choosing between a Grass type and an Electric type, your Electric-type attacker might be a safer choice.

If you have multiple Grass-type or Electric-type Pokémon that have attacks of that type, choose the Pokémon with the highest CP and best overall stats. In an encounter with Kyogre, your chance of catching it is greatest when the target ring is small enough for you to score Excellent Throws. Throwing Curveballs can improve your chances even more. But work within your abilities—if you don’t think you can reliably make Excellent Curveball Throws, aim for Nice Throws or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.

Kyogre isn’t going to make it easy on you by sitting still while you’re trying to catch it. Don’t waste your Premier Balls by throwing while it’s moving around. However, encountering shiny Groudon or Kyogre will require them to be defeated in Pokemon GO's new Primal Raids during the global Hoenn Tour. Suffice to say, that won't be easy to accomplish.

The good news for prospective shiny hunters in Pokemon GO is that if they can capture a shiny Groudon or Kyogre, they will remain shiny even after activating their new Primal Reversion mechanic. Due to the two Legendary Pokemon's enduring popularity (as well as the popularity of many of their Hoenn counterparts), Groudon and Kyogre are bound to reappear later in the year. It may only be a matter of time before these two creatures return for another Pokemon GO event, primal form or not.
