Here’s how you can archive a chat or group:

Android

On the chat list, tap and hold the chat or group you want to archive. There will be an archive button which is the icon of a box with a downwards facing arrow. You just have to tap on it to archive the chat.

iPhone

In case of an iPhone, you will have to swipe left on the chat or group you want to archive and then just tap on Archive.

WhatsApp Web

For web and desktop, you will have to right click over the individual or group chat you want to archive, then click on Archive chat.

In order to unarchive a chat or group you will have to search for the contact name or group subject. The user will then have to follow the similar process (long press on Android, swipe on iPhone and right click on Web and desktop) to unarchive the chat.

Recent Update introduced to the feature

WhatsApp is rolling out new settings for archived chats which will give the user more control over their inbox and more ways to organise the Archived Chats folder.

According to a statement from WhatsApp, many users have been demanding that archived messages should stay tucked away in the Archived Chats folder, instead of moving back into the main chat list when a new message arrives. Now, users will have the choice to keep archived chats tucked away at all times.

WhatsApp notes that archiving a chat does not delete the chat or back it up. Moreover, for iPhone users, the feature is only available for devices with iOS 9 or later. While archiving a chat, users must note that an archived individual or group chat will unarchive when you receive a new message from that individual or group chat. Here is how users can hide chats.

For Android:

-- Open WhatsApp.

-- Long press on the chat you want to hide

-- Select the archive option from the top

To unhide this chat:

-- In the Chats tab, tap the Search bar.

-- Enter the name of the chat or content from the chat you want to unarchive.

-- Long press on the chat you want to unarchive.

-- Tap Unarchive.

Alternatively, users can scroll their chats till the end to find the archived chats, long-press them to unarchive.

For iPhones:

-- Open WhatsApp

-- Right swipe on the chat that you want to hide.

To unarchive chats on WhatsApp:

-- In the Archived Chats screen, swipe left on the chat or group you want to unarchive.

-- Tap Unarchive.

Users can manually unarchive a chat by searching for a contact name or message from that contact:

Since archived chats get unarchived if users receive a new message, users can also mute such chats to not receive notifications from them, while still being part of that group.

Mute chats: WhatsApp brought in the Mute forever option recently for chats and groups. Users can set chats they know will never come to use to Mute forever option: Go to the group or conversation you want to mute > Select mute notifications from the more option > Select from 8 hours, 1 week 1 year, or Always. WhatsApp users should update their app to see the latest mute forever option.
