Is obagi skin care good?
Founded by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Zein Obagi in 1988, the Obagi skin care line includes professional, medical-grade products that are designed to “unleash your skin’s full potential”. The brand offers the Obagi Medical line with products formulated to treat problems like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots, while the Obagi Clinical line includes products to prevent these early signs of skin aging.
In this review, we’ll cover the 10 best Obagi skin care products, formulation details, key ingredients, and the research that supports (or doesn’t support) their use in skincare. We’ll also share some Obagi reviews so that you can get an idea of what customers really think of these products.
A common question about this brand is if the products are worth the cost. Obagi Skincare products are expensive, for example, the Blue Brilliance Triple Acid Peel is $145.
In our opinion, Obagi Skincare products aren’t worth the money, simply because there are other skincare brands that offer similar products that are less expensive.
One brand is Carrot & Stick, a clean skincare brand that perfectly balances the gentle nurturing of plants with the powerful results of innovative science.
Carrot & Stick intro bundles deliver great value for money because you can bundle 3 full-size products worth up to $240 for $88.
Obagi skin care products are formulated with a variety of evidence-based ingredients, such as vitamin C, peptides, retinol, and glycolic acid. Let’s take a closer look at these ingredients and how they may benefit your skin. These ingredients should all be part of your skincare routine.
Vitamin C L-ascorbic acid, or pure vitamin C, is a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from environmental free radical damage. Vitamin C also helps fade dark spots, evens out skin tone, and increases radiance.
As if that wasn’t enough, research suggests that when vitamin C is applied to the skin, it significantly reverses aging-related structural changes by influencing collagen and elastin synthesis.
A vitamin C serum, such as the Obagi Vitamin C Serum, is the best way to deliver this active ingredient into the deeper layers of your skin.
But our favorite Vitamin C serum is Carrot & Stick The Defence Serum. It contains 3 distinct types of Vitamin C that work together to help fight free radical damage. We recommend using it every morning.
Peptides As you age, your body’s production of collagen and elastin slows down. These two proteins are responsible for your skin’s structural support. As a result, the skin loses its natural plumpness and smoothness.
While collagen is necessary for maintaining youthful-looking skin, the collagen protein is too large to absorb into the skin topically. That’s why applying skin care products that contain collagen won’t provide the anti-aging benefits you’re looking for.
This is where peptides come into action. Peptides are the building blocks of protein, and they are easily absorbed into the deeper layers of skin due to their smaller size.
Obagi Professional C Peptide Complex includes acetyl octapeptide-3, a peptide that influences the muscle contraction process and relaxes facial muscles, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
We recommend Carrot & Stick The Repair Serum. It contains 7 plant-based peptides to promote plumper and smoother-looking skin. It also has skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.
Retinol Retinol is the go-to anti-aging ingredient recommended by dermatologists and skin experts. Retinol is clinically proven to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, restore skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of enlarged pores.
The only downside? Retinol can often lead to side effects like skin dryness, peeling, and irritation. That’s why it’s best to start with a low strength retinol product and work your way up to high strengths. The Obagi retinol serums allow you to do that because the brand offers a 0.5% retinol serum and 1% retinol serum.
Or you can use a product with Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, an ingredient that provides the same benefits of retinol but without the irritation. One that we recommend is this retinoid oil serum.
Glycolic Acid Glycolic acid is a member of the family of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). As an AHA, glycolic acid has the ability to exfoliate the skin, stimulate the skin’s natural regeneration process, and help the skin to retain moisture. It exfoliates the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased, leading to smoother, more radiant skin.
Glycolic acid is used in the Obagi Blue Peel, but remember that this peel contains a high concentration of denatured alcohol. Since we don’t recommend the Obagi Blue Peel, check out our curated list of the best glycolic acid peels.
Obagi skin care products are designed to help minimize the appearance of premature skin aging, skin damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, and sun damage. Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 best Obagi Skin Care products.
There are three available strengths of the Obagi Vitamin C Serum: 10%, 15%, and 20%. The form of vitamin C in all of these serums is L-ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is ideal for those struggling with skin discoloration, uneven skin tone, and signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. While Obagi Vitamin C Serum provides your skin with a potent dose of L-ascorbic acid, all three formulations contain a synthetic fragrance blend, which isn’t doing your skin any good!
Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream has a lightweight, silky texture due to the high concentrations of emollients, humectants, and silicones in this formula.
The emollients, like ethylhexyl palmitate and glyceryl stearate, will help to soften the skin and can help alleviate dry skin.
Glycerin, a humectant, works by drawing moisture into the skin to increase hydration. The extra hydration also temporarily plumps out the skin and makes lines and wrinkles less noticeable. However, this effect is transient – as soon as the moisture content in skin decreases, lines and wrinkles will return to normal size.
The silicones in this Obagi eye cream will form a thin, invisible film on the surface of skin that imparts a silky smooth skin feel and helps to lock in moisture. This film also enables silicones to temporarily fill in and disguise wrinkles. But once again this effect is purely cosmetic and once the product is washed off, fine lines and wrinkles will return.
Unfortunately, the Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream contains low concentrations of key ingredients that would actually provide long term benefits. For instance, licorice root extract, algae extract, and blueberry fruit extract are found very low on the ingredient list.
Something else to be aware of before purchasing Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream is that the formula contains five different parabens as preservatives.
There are three Obagi Nu Derm Systems: Blender, Clear, and Sunfader. All three require a prescription due to the inclusion of 4% hydroquinone (2% is the maximum allowed in an OTC product). Hydroquinone is considered to be the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation.
According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, hydroquinone produces reversible lightening of the skin by interfering with melanin production by the melanocytes. Ultimately, this causes a decrease in the number of melanocytes and decreased transfer of melanin, leading to lighter skin. While the Obagi Nu Derm systems are formulated with an effective strength of hydroquinone to produce considerable skin lightening, we have to point out that all three formulations contain parabens as preservatives.
This Obagi Nu Derm sunscreen combines the mineral sunscreen zinc oxide with the chemical sunscreen octinoxate to provide broad spectrum SPF 35 protection. Broad spectrum means that this sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Unfortunately, this is another Obagi skin care product that contains parabens as preservatives.
Peptides — aka the building blocks of important skin proteins like collagen and elastin — are the key ingredients in Obagi Professional C Peptide Complex. For instance, this formula includes acetyl octapeptide-3, a peptide that influences the muscle contraction process and relaxes facial muscles, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Obagi Professional C Peptide Complex also includes antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, to help brighten the skin while defending against free radicals.
The Obagi Blue Peel is an at-home peel that combines three acids — salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid — in a base of denatured alcohol. While these exfoliating acids provide many benefits to the skin, denatured alcohol does not.
The problem with this type of alcohol is that, at first, it seems like it’s benefitting the skin. Initially, alcohol helps to reduce excess oil while tightening the skin. But not in a healthy way!
The immediate de-greasing effects of alcohol-based products can actually stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, causing skin to look even more shiny and oily than it was before, and possibly even leading to breakouts.
Plus, denatured alcohol can even cause disruption of the skin barrier. According to a publication in the journal BBA Biomembranes, alcohol disrupts the lipids that make up the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin). While alcohol may provide short term benefits, it’s not doing your skin any good in the long run.
If you’re trying to prevent or reduce signs of skin aging, then you’ve probably heard that it’s a good idea to add a retinol serum into your nightly routine.
Obagi Retivance features retinaldehyde, a vitamin A derivative, as the key ingredient. For any vitamin A derivative to be effective, it must first be converted to retinoic acid. For example, pure retinol must be converted to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid. Using retinaldehyde offers more effectiveness than retinol because it is one step closer to retinoic acid. And, just like retinol, retinaldehyde provides benefits like reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving uneven skin tone, restoring skin firmness, reducing pore size, and more.
This Obagi sunscreen combines zinc oxide with two chemical sunscreen ingredients (octisalate and homosalate) to provide broad spectrum SPF 50 protection. It has a lightweight texture that absorbs well without feeling heavy or greasy, providing an elegant matte finish.
A 2-in-1 skin-polishing mask that exfoliates while providing 30% vitamin C in order to promote smoother, brighter, more youthful-looking skin. The formula contains ultra-fine crystals that effectively help to shed the most superficial layers of the epidermis, removing built-up surface debris and promoting healthy-looking skin.
What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2023?
Obagi skin care products are pricey, for example, the Obagi Vitamin C Serum 20% costs $133 USD for 1 ounce, and the Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream costs $115.50 for just a half ounce jar.
In our opinion, Obagi skin care products are not worth the hefty price tags, especially since there are other brands offering similar products for a fraction of the cost.
For example, instead of dishing out $133 for the Obagi Vitamin C Serum, you could pay just $5.80 for The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension, which combines 23% pure L-Ascorbic Acid with hyaluronic acid. Seems like a no brainer to us!
You can buy Obagi skin care products on the brand’s website, as well as through physicians, medical spas, and other skin care professionals. The brand’s website has a locator so that you can enter your zip code to find skin care professionals that sell Obagi skin care products near you. In addition, Sephora and Dermstore are authorized online sellers of Obagi skin care products.
The Obagi return policy states, “If you are dissatisfied with any purchase you have made through this Site, you have the option of returning any unopened product for a refund within 30 days of the shipment date stated on the invoice.”
Obagi is not cruelty free. The brand states on its website, “Unless mandated by the FDA for drug safety purposes, Obagi does not test its products on animals. Non-prescription Obagi products have not been tested on animals.”
The brand’s website states, “We cannot guarantee that any of our products are vegan”.
Obagi reviews on the brand’s website are overall very positive. However, there aren’t very many reviews, which is why we turned to Dermstore.com to see what customers have to say about Obagi skin care products.
One product that has been very well received is the Obagi Vitamin C Serum 20%, which has earned an average rating of 4.76 out of 5 stars after more than 500 customer reviews.
The positive reviews for the Obagi Vitamin C Serum are from customers who confirm that this serum really does help with hyperpigmentation. It is said to help fade dark spots and acne scars, as well as give the skin a glow.
For example, one review says, “Since using this product I have been getting compliments about how radiant my skin looks. I noticed that my skin tone has even out and my acne scars are beginning to disappear. I have stopped wearing foundation since using this.”
And another very positive review says, “I love this serum. It instantly brightened my skin, smells wonderful and absorbs quickly. Did not break me out.”
Even though there aren’t many negative Obagi Vitamin C Serum reviews, it’s still a good idea to take a look at what these reviews say to see why customers did not like this serum. Most of the negative reviews we found were from customers who did not see the results they were hoping for even after months of using Obagi C Serum.
For example, one review says, “This has been very disappointing. I have a couple of sunspots, one that I’ve been trying to fade for quite some time. I had high hopes for this serum because of the great reviews. I’ve been using it as directed. I use SPF and avoid the sun. I’ve been using this serum every day for at least 8 weeks and yes, my skin feels nice, but this hasn’t brightened my skin tone or faded any spots. A little goes a very long way and I still have quite a bit of product left. However, as this didn’t actually do anything visibly to my face, I won’t be repurchasing. It didn’t work for me.”
And a similar review says, “This vitamin C was okay, applied well with easy absorption. However I did not notice any difference when using this product and for its price point I expected more.”
Overall, we think that some Obagi skin care products are better than others, and we would recommend avoiding the products that contain fragrance and parabens.
If you’re looking for skincare products to address the signs of aging, we recommend Carrot & Stick. Carrot & Stick maximizes the use of powerful ingredients and minimizes the use of superficial ones, resulting in advanced skincare solutions that help promote healthy, more youthful-looking skin. We recommend The Defence Serum, followed by The Moisturizer.
Key Ingredients
The Obagi line is formulated with ingredients proven to be effective, such as the following:
# Vitamin C - a powerful antioxidant to help protect the skin from damage caused by the environment, evens tone, helps diminish dark spots, and promotes radiance. It also influences collagen and elastin production.
# Peptides - as the building blocks of protein, peptides help collagen and elastin absorb deeper into the skin because they are very small and can penetrate easier.
# Retinol - to help improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, decrease pore size, and restore some firmness.
# Glycolic Acid - works to exfoliate the skin, help retain moisture, and aid in natural regeneration.
In this review, we will discuss the top Obagi products, along with both positive and negative comments from people who have used the products, to provide a more accurate review.
The Obagi skincare line is designed to help counter the skin’s natural aging process, as well as improve damage and hyper-pigmentation. Below is a list of Obagi’s most popular products.
Created to nourish dry skin, this moisturizer is creamy and emollient, yet it’s non-greasy. Shea butter, glycerin, and mango butter are added to seal in moisture. Hydromanil is added to lock in the moisture that is released as the product is applied to the skin, and promises to provide 8 hours of hydration protection.

Negative: “wish it came in a bigger size”
There are 3 different strengths available of Obagi Vitamin C Serum, at 10%, 15%, and 20%. In all of these available strengths, vitamin C comes in the form of L-ascorbic acid. Vitamin C plays an important role in skincare to help with tone and texture, as well as reduce fine lines.
All 3 formulas also contain a synthetic fragrance, which can be problematic for sensitive skin.
Customer Reviews: no ratings on DermAvenue, reviews found elsewhere averaging 4.5
Favorable: “After only few days started to see brighter skin with fewer dark spots on my face. Have used for over a year and believe it is worth the cost.”
Negative: “I have very sensitive skin and have used Obagi products in the past. I decided I wanted to try the Vitamin C serum again and purchased the Vitamin C 20. Sadly after one application, it appeared to dry my skin (several dry patches). Perhaps I should have started with a lower concentration (10) and worked my way up to achieve the results all of the other reviewers have received.”
This potent serum has a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and antioxidants to help neutralize free radicals, as well as protect the skin from the environment. It also boosts collagen production for better elasticity and minimizes the appearance of fine lines. The serum is also created to stimulate the skin to repair itself from previous damage.

Favorable: “I love Obagi vit c serum. I've been using it for a few years now. I truly believe it makes a difference in my skin.”
Negative: “Had hoped this would take away my dark spots. It has lightened them but they are still there.”
There is a high concentration of humectant, emollients, and silicone in this eye cream, giving it a silky and lightweight feel. The emollients work together to soften and provide moisture to the skin around the eye, whereas the humectant work to increase moisture and temporarily plump the skin and diminish the appearance of fine lines. The silicone work as a protectant to temporarily seal in the moisture from the emollients and humectant.
The levels of key ingredients in this particular product indicate that the results you might see are temporary for the duration of using the cream.

Obagi products help minimize the appearance of premature skin aging, skin damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, and sun damage and are primarily available through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medical spas, and other skin care professionals.
Also known as Obagi Medical, the brand’s website notes, “skin care is more than ‘correcting’ or even ‘preventing,’ it’s about unleashing your skin’s full potential.” To back its approach to skincare it is worth noting that Obagi won two awards at the Beauty Choice Awards by NewBeauty Magazine, including Best Overall Brand Sold at a Doctor’s Office and Best Overall Dark Spot Eraser for their Obagi Nu-Derm® Clear™.
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Zein Obagi founded Obagi in 1988. He wanted to help those suffering from tired, aging skin by creating prescription-based skincare products that did the job well. The main idea around Obagi is that your skin is more than a product of your past: it’s a window into your future.
Even though a lot has changed for the brand, they uphold its same goal to slow the appearance of aging skin, heal scars, root out acne, even out tone, and shield from sun damage. The company designs its products for any skin tone.
Obagi ships within the United States. For customers outside of the U.S., they can look for a distributor in their country on the company’s website. If the country is not listed then Obagi cannot ship to that location. There are also some restrictions on prescription products in Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, and Texas.
Unless mandated by the FDA for drug safety purposes, Obagi does not test its products on animals. Non-prescription Obagi products have not been tested on animals.
The science behind Obagi products primarily focuses on promoting cellular turnover, which helps to renew and rejuvenate the skin. This is achieved through the ingredients glycolic acid, tretinoin, and vitamin C.
Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be shed more easily. This process can help to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
Tretinoin, also known as retinoic acid, is a form of vitamin A used to increase cellular turnover and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. It works by promoting the production of new skin cells and decreasing the production of melanin, which can cause hyperpigmentation.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, which can cause skin aging. It also helps to brighten the skin and improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
The company has its own research and development team that investigates thousands of ingredients for its formulations. Afterwards, it will evaluate the possible forms for things like bio-availability and quality.
Obagi sells almost 100 products, bundles, and prescriptions on its website. Users can shop and buy Obagi products online and search by product type, skin concern, skin care line, ingredient, or skin type.
Product types include:
For tailored recommendations, users can start with the Skin Analzyer quiz. This survey asks a series of questions about the user’s skin and health. Afterwards, it will generate a list of products most likely to fit that individual’s needs.
Even with this quiz, the company recommends that customers talk to their physician about their skin care needs.
While we will not go over every product in the brand, we will look at a few offerings.
Tretinoin is a type of Vitamin A intended to treat and prevent acne. Available by prescription only, it has been clinically proven to improve breakout symptoms and prevent the development of acne. These products are for topical use only and are all fragrance free.
Obagi brand’s tretinoin products come in various strengths (0.025%-0.1%) and two forms (gel or cream).
To purchase, users should contact their healthcare provider to obtain a prescription or they can locate a nearby physician who offers this product using the Physician Finder tool on the website.
This product refreshes the appearance of delicate skin around eyes. One of its key ingredients is the antioxidant caffeine, which reduces the appearance of under-eye puffiness.
Obagi combines caffeine with its Bi-Mineral Contour Complex™ consisting of zinc, copper and malonate. This mixture helps promote healthy elastin around the eyes, resulting in tighter-looking skin.
Customers apply the product using the rollerball to gently roll the product outside and underneath the eye area. Then, they smooth in until the skin absorbs the product. The recommendation is to apply twice daily, in the morning and the night.
This peptide serum includes pro-Vitamin B and Vitamin E as well as synthetic forms of plant growth factors and the SNAP-8 peptide. The vitamins help brighten skin while growth factors improve the appearance of firmness, and fine lines and wrinkles.
It also includes Kinetin, Zeatin, and a ß glucan derivative with Vitamin C to diminish the appearance of skin aging. Overall, this product is designed to promote a healthy, youthful glow.
Customers should apply 2 to 3 pumps to the face in the morning and evening. For optimal results, they should use in combination with Obagi moisturizer and sunscreen.
This is a dual-function moisturizing cream containing ingredients that hydrate skin as well as broad spectrum SPF 30 to help prevent skin damage caused by UVA/UVB rays.
The sunscreen agents are avobenzone 1%, octinoxate 7.5%, octisalate 5%, and oxybenzone 5%.
Customers should apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours as needed. This sunscreen is not water-resistant.
The company does have a return policy. However, items received more than 30 days after purchase date or that have been opened may not be returned.
Obagi products can be considered more expensive compared to other over-the-counter skincare brands. However, the brand’s premium pricing reflects the quality and effectiveness of the products.
Prices for Obagi products can range anywhere from $25 (SUZANOBAGIMDTM Acne Cleansing Wipes) to $250 (ELASTIderm® Neck and Décolleté Concentrate) for a single product. It’s important to remember that these items differ in quantity.
The company also sells “systems” which are a package of multiple products designed to achieve a single goal. These bundles range from $166-$470.
The prescription products are listed as $0 on the website. This is due to differences in prices once the products depending on the customer’s insurance.
All orders are subject to sales tax, depending on the the state and city to which the order will be shipped. Shipping rates also apply.
It’s important to note that while Obagi products can be more expensive, many customers feel that the results are worth the investment. The brand’s products are formulated with high-quality, active ingredients scientifically proven to improve skin health and deliver noticeable results.

Though there is a significant environmental component to aging, such as sun exposure, genetics can play a role too. Before investing in expensive skin care products, you may want to best understand how your genes may be effecting your skin and talk with your doctor.
There are many ways to assess genetics. Nebula Genomics provides a comprehensive DNA test highlighting predispositions related to skin and aging. With reports, you can easily explore your DNA and learn about discoveries focused on things like vitiligo, psoriasis, and more.
With 30x Whole-Genome Sequencing, Nebula sequences 100% of your DNA to get to the root cause of every biological inclination. The test is incredibly accurate and includes other additions, including ancestry reporting and genome exploration tools. Regularly updated reports ensure that you will not miss the latest genetic research.
Nebula is not a diagnostic test, but the results are of the highest quality and can be used in consultation with health care professionals.
For only $299 or less, customers will get access to their entire genome, allowing them to continue to ask more questions as more research is conducted.
