In Western languages, the Igbo word undergoes a separation of the vowels into two and is usually pronounced igbo. The tongue is placed in the shape of a g and the lips in the shape of a b in the Igbo language. It is igbo. The opposite of foreigner is what gb means.

The first book to publish Igbo words was Geschichte der Mission der Evangelischen Brüder auf den Carabischen Inseln ("History of the Mission of the Evangelical Brothers in the Caribbean Islands"), published in 1777. Shortly thereafter, in 1789. , The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, an autobiography of ex-slave Olaudah Equiano, was published in London, with 79 words in Igbo. The book describes in detail various aspects of Igbo life, based on the experiences from Equiano in Essaka, his hometown. Following the British expeditions to Niger in 1854 and 1857, the Yoruba priest Samuel Ajayi Crowther, assisted by a young Igbo interpreter named Simon Jonas, produced a basic manual for the Igbo language in 1857.

The Ibo Bible Union standardized the language in church use. The Bible manuscript that Thomas John Dennis was working on washed up on the shore after he died in a shipping accident.

The dialects of two members of the Ezinifite Idbo group in the central province of Owerri between the cities of Owerri and Umuahia in eastern Nigeria are the basis of the so-called "Central Igbo".

The literary form of Igbo was proposed in 1939 by Dr. Ida C. Ward and has gradually been accepted by missionaries, writers, and publishers throughout the region.

The Society for the Promotion of Igbo Language and Culture established a Standardization Committee in 1972 to broaden the use of Central Igbo. The aim of "Standard Igbo" is to include words from other dialects outside the core areas of Central Igbo.
