Every person alive exists within their own individual energy field and has their own aura colors.

This energy field is sometimes called soul, or spirit. The field contains all of the patterns, karma, traumas, and information from everything that you have ever experienced.

Each energy field exists at a certain vibration, and all fields are connected. Energy vampires, for example, take advantage of this and feed on other people to sustain themselves because their own vibration is very low. When you integrate your traumatic experiences, start feeling fulfilled, grateful, balanced and at peace, your field vibration rises, which is called ascending.

You can tell how your energy field is doing by examining how your life is going and how you’re feeling about it all. However, if you want to know how someone else’s energy field is, you can examine their aura. To read auras, you have to understand two things:

1. Everything is essentially a vibration.

2. We perceive color through reflection.

This means that an apple is not red, the surface of the apple is reflecting a wavelength that the human eye is seeing as red. An object will appear white when it reflects all wavelengths, or black when it absorbs them all.

To read the aura colors, what you have to do is gaze at a person (or yourself in the mirror) and let your eyes relax. Keep staring until you begin to see a colored outline around the body. That’s the aura, and here’s what each of the colors you can see mean:

The red aura is connected to the root chakra, which is the ground chakra. Red auras are adventurous and willing. They are always open to trying new things, meeting new people, and testing boundaries. They are a bit defiant and can lose control of their emotions easily. Red auras mean the person can struggle with controlling their anger, or easily feel threatened and unsafe. Red auras mean the person is strong, direct, self-fulfilled, and primed for a lifetime of wellness and monetary success.

The orange aura is connected to the sacral chakra. Orange auras mean that someone is outgoing, people-oriented, and highly social (even if they often display traits of introversion). They are tribe-minded, regardless. Orange auras mean that these people are extremely thoughtful and can perceive other people’s needs, and charm them by meeting them. Orange auras are very sensitive but forgive quickly. They are also prone to overreaction, or over-dependence on others. However, they generally live happy and fulfilled lives.

The yellow aura is connected to the solar plexus chakra. People with a yellow aura tend to be hardworking, independent, intelligent, and analytical. They are excellent communicators, and they are even better at noticing things about human behavior that most people fail to recognize. They have lots of friends and when they are not being so serious, can have a very silly and laid back sense of humor.

The green aura is connected to the heart chakra. People with a green chakra are loving, giving, and generous. They are deeply connected to the people around them, express unconditional kindness, and have an intent to leave the world better than they found it. However, they can also struggle with feelings of envy, inferiority, and jealousy, when that desire to be a healer and helper is taken on by the ego’s desire to be “greater than” the rest (which is a detriment to their true need, which is to be connected).

The blue aura is connected to the throat chakra. People with a blue aura are peaceable, calm and self-reflective. They understand the power of their words and of their intentions, and thus, they speak carefully and wisely. They’re naturally spiritual, wise, curious and always want to help others when they can. They can be creative, artistic, or at the very least, innovative in their field of choice.

The purple aura is connected to the third eye chakra. People with a purple aura are among the wisest and most evolved there are. They are intuitive masters and are often very advanced in their personal development. They have a deep connection to source wisdom and use it for the betterment of humanity. They are future-oriented and idealistic and tend to live magical lives.

The white aura is connected to the crown chakra. White auras can mean a few different things: either that a person is a newer soul, with fewer experiences, or, a very old soul who has cleared out their karma and lives in a state of complete balance and harmony within themselves. White auras are the purest and divine that exist. They indicate someone who is psychic levels of intuitive, and deeply connected to the source. These people are transcendent and even angelic.

It is common to see a gray overlay around someone’s aura, or in parts of it. This indicates that there are blocked energies in that space. What that means practically is that someone had an experience they couldn’t let go of or rationalize, and thus, they disconnected from it and created a breach in their field. This breach impacts all of the energy (because everything, in truth, is connected) and to return to a healed, whole energy field, we must accept and allow everything that exists to merge and be unified.

Another common issue is seeing a brown overlay, which represents a “muddied” energy. It is typical amongst people who envy others, or subconsciously weaken their own energy fields to be more likable or pleasing to abusive people who have no intention of accepting them regardless.

Whether you first heard about aura colors from social media or your super spiritual friend, it's understandable if you didn't totally understand the concept. After all, when talking about people, the word "aura" is often used interchangeably with "vibe," even though they don't really mean the same thing. And if you're new to the idea of people radiating different colors—which some people can see, and others can't—and each color having its own meaning, it might leave your head swirling with a kaleidoscope of questions. Like, for starters...

An aura is an electromagnetic field, also called an energy field, that radiates off everything, including the human body, says Pamala Oslie, a professional psychic intuitive, an aura expert, and author of Life Colors: What the Colors in Your Aura Reveal. "According to quantum physics, we're all energy, so the fact that we're radiating energy makes sense," Oslie explains, noting that auras have been detected with electronic equipment. Kirlian photography, for example, is created using an electrified photographic plate and show a glowing discharge of energy, similar to a halo or aura, around an object, per Adobe.

When it comes to everyday aura detection, you likely don't have fancy electronic equipment to read someone's energy rainbow. Instead, think of when you meet someone and you have a gut reaction to whether or not you’ll be friends—that can be boiled down to their aura. "Even if people can't see the aura, we can all feel it," says Oslie. "That's why you can meet somebody for the first time and feel comfortable around them... and other people you don't even want to be in the same room with. You're feeling their energy throughout their aura."

Meet the Experts: Pamala Oslie is a professional psychic intuitive, an aura expert, and author of Life Colors: What the Colors in Your Aura Reveal. Eileen Lee is an aura reader, photographer, and founder of AURA AURA, an experiential aura portrait practice.

But the tricky part of interpreting aura colors and their meanings is that misconceptions abound on both ends of the spectrum—that auras are just one color and don’t change, or that they change all the time. "It's not one or the other," says Eileen Lee, an aura reader, photographer, and founder of AURA AURA, an experiential portrait aura practice. "Everybody's just so different based on really what you're experiencing, more importantly, how you're experiencing it."

The most accurate way is to "access somebody who's able to photograph your aura," says Lee. Personality tests claiming to reveal your aura do exist, but they "aren't necessarily accurate because our auras do sort of change ," she explains.

In fact, it's a myth or, at least a misconception, that aura colors are purely based on personality. That's a factor, sure, but your aura is more about the energy you embody at a certain time, Lee says, hence the need for a photograph. It functions similarly to a snapshot of your life—capturing a moment of it, rather than telling the whole story. That said, "some people's lives are very consistent, so their aura colors probably wouldn't shift very much," she explains. "Versus somebody whose life is very dynamic and always has different experiences, their energy would be a bit more all over the place."

Lee says we're innately born with the ability to see others' auras, but as we grow older, we start to tune all of it out.

However, some people still possess the ability to see them, and there are different ways to go about it. To start practicing, use your own (or someone else's) hand to "start seeing if you can kind of focus around and see at least its energy field," Lee suggests. At first, it might look white or gray, but colors will show up when you’ve had practice in opening yourself up and not trying to see anything in particular. She also encourages doing research online and reading books to teach yourself more about aura reading. "Different things work for different people," she adds, so there’s not necessarily one right way to do it.

You can also try to meditate and notice "the colors that are closest to you," she encourages, which is similar to the feeling of falling asleep and seeing colors when you’re in that in-between sleep and normal state of consciousness.

Aside from that, you and another person can compare photographs of your auras, so you can see their aura colors at that moment in time.

Watch this to learn what it's like to live a day in the life of an aura reader:

Well, it depends. "There isn't necessarily a set rule for how long your aura is going to be like this," says Lee. For example, two people who go through the same experience together, such as moving to a new place, will both likely have a lot of red in their aura, since that's related to starting new life chapters, according to Lee. But their auras can still change at different times because "how you individually process that experience can be so different," she explains. Basically, your aura is as special and unique as you!

Knowing the color of your aura, including if/when it's changed, is key, Oslie says, because it can not only help you understand who you are, but also give you actual permission to be who you are. (Feel stuck in a dead-end job? Check your aura color. Keep fighting with your S.O.? Compare those auras. Need to better manage your cash? Use. Your. Aura.)

Once you've got the rundown on all the different aura colors and their meanings (more on that in a sec), you can also better understand your friends, family, and even that cool rando you met at a party last week. "Then, it's easier to communicate, get along, and bring the best out of each other," Oslie says. And, I mean, who doesn't want that?

Red often signifies tangible life changes, a.k.a. anything that feels like starting a new chapter, says Lee, noting that relationship changes, job or career shifts, and literally moving somewhere all fit the bill.

Because aura colors relate back to the chakra system within our bodies (which you probably recall hearing something about in a yoga class), "red is our foundation," says Lee. "The function of our root chakra is to ground us, to make us feel safe and secure within ourselves, but then also, literally the life that you're trying to mold and shape in some way."

The problem? "When we have a lot of red energy, it tends to be misunderstood. I've heard in the past that if your aura is all red, it's a negative thing, like you're out of balance," she explains. "But to me, it's like what you need at that time is a lot of red energy, because if you think about it, when you go through a lot of change sometimes it feels chaotic." The red aura color, with its grounding energy courtesy of the root chakra, could be just what you need.

In terms of personality traits, though, red means taking action and leadership, says Lee: "It's the energetic archetype of a leader—somebody who takes initiative—because tangible change literally never comes about just sitting at home and wishing it to happen, right?" Interestingly, those who embody that adventurous doer sort of spirit always tend to have red in their aura, no matter what life throws at them.

Because Lee uses the chakra system, the second aura color is orange, which is linked to our sacral chakra. "That deals with your emotions, relationships, how we experience things," says Lee. "It's literally the color of experiencing life."

The sunny shade aligns with the solar plexus. "From a big picture perspective, that color deals with our power, our confidence, our ego self, and also our intellect," says Lee.

"Green is reflective of the heart chakra, and I've noticed that when we have a lot of heart chakra energy, it's about self-love, self nurturing energy," says Lee, noting that it often signals being more generous and open with others as well. (Think about it: When you love yourself, it's easier to spread that love around.)

The avocado-esque hue usually shows up in your aura when going through growth or transformation because you're using so much of that self-love energy to overcome a challenging situation, says Lee. That can be anything from going through grief to starting a new job. Or, if you're stepping into a new role, like first-time parenthood, for example. Turns out, Kermit said it best: It's not easy being green. But it does offer an opportunity for self-reflect, learn, and grow, notes Lee.

Exact shade is important here—a true cyan blue (not too light, not too dark—is reflective of the throat chakra, which "governs how we communicate and how we express ourselves," says Lee. But it's not all talk. Lee makes a point of noting that humans can express themselves in different ways beyond simple chitchat.

That's aligned with the third eye chakra (a.k.a. the brow chakra), which deals with awareness, understanding, and being more deeply connected to yourself, says Lee.

This pretty purple is connected to the crown chakra, which, Lee says, is all about our dreams and possibilities. When violet shows up in your aura, you're likely embodying an energy that trying (or, hopefully, succeeding!) to tap into a more imaginative space.

You likely talk in visual terms, like "I have a vision" and "I have a dream," adds Oslie. Sometimes, though, your dreams are so big, you wonder if you'll ever achieve them. (Don't worry, happens to the best of us.)

White is a little tricky, but that's what makes it interesting. It's kind of like all the colors, but it's also technically an extension of the crown chakra, says Lee. "People always say... white means you're spiritual. But what I've noticed is white actually reflects more of connecting into that sort of energy, but it doesn't just mean you're spiritual," she explains. "Usually, it represents somebody who, instead of being governed by logic and is always in their head, understands that there are things bigger than themselves. They just tend to be more open, so they connect into that sort of spiritual energy." Instead of sweating the small (and medium and big) stuff, they trust that clarity will just come through naturally.

"I've also noticed a lot of white in people's auras can actually reflect states where they're feeling very confused or things are a little bit overwhelming mentally, but it's not like they're overthinking it," Lee adds. "It's just almost like there's too much to take in at once... almost like you're in a fog, and instead of trying to wade through it, you're just waiting for the fog to dissipate."

Now, I know what you're thinking (because tbh, I thought it, too): Tan is an aura color? It sure is, according to Lee and Oslie, and a pretty solid one at that. Almost like a darker shade of yellow, tan "reflects more of a linear thinking process," says Lee. Someone who has a lot of tan in their aura tends to be more analytical and embodies a left brain kind of energy, she adds. You know your super-rational friend who talks you down every time you think about blowing your whole paycheck on a really cute pair of boots? Yep, they've got a healthy dose of tan going on.

"Tans want security and stability," adds Oslie. They also appreciate practicality—and want as much of it in their life as possible. If you have tan in your aura, you're likely the textbook definition of "detail-oriented" and live by the motto "slow and steady wins the race."

When Lee sees magenta in someone's aura photograph, she also tends to see white on top of it. " almost like if you think about your aura like a tiered birthday cake," she explains. "Magenta is a color that's literally in between red and an indigo blue, so it reflects things like acting on your intuition." Juxtaposed with white, that can be interpreted as using intuition to realize your dreams.

On its own, magenta energy is associated with someone prioritizing themself and marching to the beat of their own drum. The aura color also has a bit of a rebellious rep, but Lee says "it's rebellious in the sense of not needing external validation from anybody aside from themselves." Someone with a heckuva lotta magenta is authentically themselves and makes no apologies about it.

What's most interesting about this aura color, says Lee, is that when you're not used to being magenta, but then it comes into your energy field, it signals that you're trying to connect more with who what you were like as a kid—when you were free to do whatever you wanted and didn't care what others thought. "I always love seeing magenta in people's auras because they're just doing what lights them up," she adds.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but…you’re burnt out. "There's actually no such thing as black in your aura," Lee says, explaining that it appears as a sign of a lack of energy. If black shows up in your aura or your aura colors look dim, that can mean you’re exhausted from any number of things, such as arguing with someone or being around a person who depletes your energy. "Sometimes, it's environments that we're in or people around or situations that all really shows up," she explains. It’s more of a hole in your aura than a color itself.

When you're "rainbowing," as Lee calls it (fun new phrase alert!), you tend to feel like life is a little chaotic. Granted, it's usually a bunch of good stuff happening all at once, she says, but it's still a lot to handle. You're literally being pulled in many different directions, versus those who have fewer colors in their auras, they tend to be more focused on just a couple of aspects in their life.

"If you really think about each color as a different state of consciousness that you're in, or a different dimension of yourself, you're operating from all these levels all at once, which for most people can be a little bit more overwhelming," explains Lee. "...I always say it's like a double edged sword. While rainbows look beautiful, you don't necessarily feel so beautiful when you're experiencing it."

"I don't see a real pink too often," says Lee, meaning a lighter, bubblegum-esque shade than magenta.

"I think why that is a true pink reflects somebody who's almost like an innocent child in their nature—who's very just open hearted, very gentle, very compassionate," she explains. "It's almost saint-like kind of qualities. Somebody like a Mother Teresa would probably have a pink energy."

Right side of photo (your body's left side): This side represents energy coming in, the passive, feminine receptive (yin) side of your body. It indicates future energy that you are cultivating and calling in. As this is the energy we are working with internally, it can be seen as how we view ourselves. This side is representative of your emotional and imaginative aspects.

Center or top of photo (everything above your forehead): This area represents your consciousness, the present energy, thoughts, feelings and emotions you are experiencing. The closer the colors are, the more intensely you are thinking about or experiencing them.

If there is a band of color stretching like an arch within the top half of the image, this is indicative of something you hold in high esteem or something you are working towards connecting to - hopes/goals/aspirations.

Auras that expand out indicate expansion, expressiveness, extroversion, social activity, desire for connection, gregariousness, positive outlook, sense of adventure. Auras closer in indicate inward focus, sensitivity, desire for solitude, meditation, peace, tranquility, or rest. The key word here is boundaries.

Left side of photo (your body's right side): This side represents energy going out, the masculine expressive (yang) side of your body. It indicates recent past energy that has passed through, now being released and expressed. As this energy is external, it can also be also be viewed as how others perceive you, aka your persona. Colors on this side relate to tangible / physical changes and memories.

Throat / Communication: This area indicates how you communicate. It only tends to illuminate during periods when we are being outspoken.

Heart / Center: This area indicates energy coming from your heart space. Colors tend to show up only during periods of strong feeling & emotion, or also when we intentionally open up and are connected to this energy center.

RED / Red is the color of the root chakra, which relates to our connection with the physical body, and the tangible world around us. It appears in the auras of fearless individuals who have a natural understanding of their physical reality and enjoy manifesting desires in the material world. They are passionate and unapologetic about experiencing dynamic and abundant adventures in life as a physical being. It’s this passion and restlessness that keeps them driven in life. They are generally unafraid of death, birth, over-indulgence, sensuality, or adrenaline-inducing activities. Those with red emissions in their energy fields are powerful people that rarely deny themselves the pleasures of the physical plane. The saturation or brightness of a color in your aura can indicate different things. If the red in your aura is murky or dark, you may be holding on to anger, frustration, or trauma. It can also indicate low energy, exhaustion or being over-worked.

PINK / A true, lighter pink is one of the more rare colors to show up in an aura. A bubblegum/baby pink aura can be seen around persons who are gentle in nature and radiate pleasant, loving energy to every being they come into contact with. They are deeply sensitive, embrace the ideals of romantic love, and often have a natural ability to keep the romance alive and well in relationships. They are natural healers and creatives, with an inkling toward intuitive abilities. The color pink vibrates at a similar frequency as green, which corresponds to the heart chakra. People who have light pink emissions in their aura inspire a feeling of comfort to those around them. Pink vibrations are bubbly and uplifting because they correspond directly to the heart chakra, which is typically associated with feminine energy. Even in the midst of life’s most pressing challenges, a person with a pink aura can help heal others with a glance, a smile, a kind word, or just by being present. They remind us to be gentle with each other and all of earth’s creatures.

MAGENTA / Those with a magenta aura are true originals. The color magenta is a combination of red and blue frequencies - technically right in-between the two on the color spectrum. Those with magenta emissions in their aura combine a masterful understanding of the physical world (Red) with a heightened capacity for intuitive thinking (Indigo). This combination makes people with magenta auras ideally suited for creative work. These high-energy, naturally creative beings thrive on originality and innovation and are not fond of using copycat methods of creativity. Those with magenta in their auras tend to walk to the beat of their own drum, and experience the world in their own way. They can sometimes come across as a bit eccentric, but generally attract positive attention from their peers.  These individualistic thinkers consider following the crowd to be boring and restrictive. Peer pressure has no effect on them. They love to shock people, to shake them from their ordinary, humdrum existence. These unique personalities are generally optimistic and prefer to look at life with a sense of humor. Magentas are usually very strong-willed and intelligent – but rarely understood. They are innovative individuals, fascinated by the latest gadgets and inventions.  They do, however, deal with the tangibles on the planet - like taking physical substance and stretching it into new forms that go beyond what people consider normal. These free spirits aren't usually concerned about what others think, rather being authentic to themselves is what’s most important.

ORANGE / Orange is the color of the sacral chakra, which relates to creativity, sensuality, and our emotional sutble body. Orange is the energy center for exchange and relationships, placing high value on friendships and interacting with others. Those with orange emissions in their auras resonate with the vibrations of joyful exchange, whether relating to work, resources, money, time, energy, or love. They possess strength in teamwork due to their ability to be relatable and sociable. Those with orange in their aura are highly perceptive and incredibly dynamic individuals. Strangers do not stay strangers for very long for those with an orange aura, as friendships develop very quickly for these relationship experts. People with orange auras have a hard time sitting still as they are thrill seekers who want to experience all the world has to offer. Because they crave newness and sensation, vibrating at a lower orange frequency can lead to addiction or trouble committing in relationships.

YELLOW  / Yellow is the color of the solar plexus chakra, which rules our intellect, self-esteem and personal power. Those with yellow in their energy field resonate with vibrations of confidence, happiness, a strong sense of self, esteem, and the ability to inspire others to achieve greatness. They are natural born leaders, who tend to have high levels of energy and the ability to positively motivate others. Individuals with yellow auras encourage and support others by naturally being themselves - they radiate like the sun and they also may have a great ability to analyze complex concepts. Those who glow yellow are full of inner joy, generosity, and naturally attract others towards them - they are warm and radiant like the sun. When yellow is darker and dense in our aura, we may experiencing self criticism, perfectionism, over confidence, or operating too much from our ego driven self.

TAN / A tan aura can be found in individuals who are very logical and analytical. They choose to methodically process every step, from one through ten. They are also very practical, security-conscious and have a tendency to keep their feelings to themselves. They are not risk-takers, these are the people who want to build a foundation brick by brick before taking a leap. These detail-oriented beings are strategic in their approach to life, and often times have the ability to accomplish time-consuming tasks that frustrate others. They are down-to-earth personalities who value long-term commitment. Those with tan in their auras love to analyze, learn, and understand three-dimensional reality. They have a strategic, linear way of thinking.

GREEN / Green frequencies resonate with the vibration of the heart chakra, the center of personal growth and healing. Those with green auras radiate unconditional love and a life force energy that is sensed by all beings that come into their presence. Because of this, individuals with intense green in their auras consistantly over time, are typically drawn to nature and animals and are natural self healers. Being in the presence of a person with green emissions in their energy field can be a very peaceful and restful experience. They are the most balanced people in the entire color spectrum, easily giving equal attention to their own creative goals and to the people they love. They have a sense of responsibility and service to others, and are very self assertive. The green aura is one that bridges the spiritual and physical worlds. They are focused, with high ideals and aspirations - profoundly creative individuals. If your green is dark or murky, you may be focusing on feelings of jealousy or envy - you may be feeling like the victim and viewing comments from others as criticism.

BLUE  / A lighter cyan or turquoise blue is the color of the throat chakra, ruling communication and self-expression. A true blue in the aura is indicative of a person with natural expressive gifts and the ability to speak their truth. Individuals with light blue emissions in their energy field have an inner knowledge and wisdom and tend to rely on their feelings to determine what is right without needing outside facts or data for substantiation. These expressive dreamers place a great importance on personal relationships. Honesty and clarity in communication is very important to them. They love to gather and share wisdom and make great philosophers. The lighter the blue of your aura, the more peaceful and positive the energy you project.

INDIGO / Indigo blue is the color of the third eye chakra, relating to intuition and inner knowing. Its frequency is the second highest vibrational energy of the visible color spectrum and relates to having deep intuitive gifts. People with indigo in their auras are extremely sensitive to others’ energy and are very in tune - they tend to know things before they happen, hear things before they are said, and dream lucidly and literally. They are sensitive but lend that sensitivity towards others in terms of empathy. Indigos tend to operate from a deep depth of feeling vs logic. They are seekers by nature and see the world as something bigger than themselves as an individual. They understand that living in the moment and going with the natural flow of life is key. Those with indigo in their aura trust their intuition and can easily discern between truth and illusion. As communicators and connectors, they help those they meet along the way to understand the beauty and vastness of the universe and its mysteries. A darker, murky indigo, such as navy or peacock blue can indicate a period of self doubt, a disconnect with intuition and uncertainty.

VIOLET ( PURPLE ) / Violet is the color of the crown chakra which relates to connection to our dreams and higher consciousness. Individuals with violet in their auras are dynamic, charismatic, and have powerful personalities. Their task or mission in life is to lead and inspire humankind and to guide us into a new age of prosperity, happiness, and wholeness. They have an inner and driving urge to do something important with their life. They are visionaries, and have high ideals and hopes for the future.  Because those with violet purple energy possess both knowledge and intuition, they can usually see and recognize the “bigger picture” of any situation without being bogged down with details. They are natural empaths, easily assessing the vibrations of others. They crave connection and present themselves as open books to inspire and encourage the sharing of others. Purple auras vibrate at a very high speed, signaling a close connection with the universe and unseen forms of life energy. Those with violet emissions in their energy field tend to have high levels of thought activity and ability to manifest their projections into the material world. They also exhibit a high degree of originality when it comes to innovative thoughts, progressive ideas, and open-minded insights that show concern for the entire universal life matrix.

Answer # 4 #

If you’re inclined to believe in spiritual forces, you already know that an aura is the invisible energy field that surrounds each of our bodies. Impacting this energy are our feelings and moods, so it is an ever-shifting entity.

And when we refer to aura colors, we mean the hues associated with those changing energy fields. Typically, our auras are a mix of multiple colors, with one more prominent than the rest.

"Our bodies emit energetic frequencies — that’s why you can feel good vibes," explain the twins Emily and Jessica Leung, healers who go by Love Twintuitives. "We are all literally walking mood rings. A person may have a more inherent base aura color based upon their personality, but it’s a snapshot of the moment of your emotional state."

Spiritual expert Audrey Hope adds, "An aura is the vibration we are at, kind of like a sound octave or a musical note. Our auras change at different times depending on our spiritual level, our feelings, our traumas, and what we are giving out to the world."

She explains that each chakra wheel in our body is associated with a unique color. Starting at the root chakra, these colors go from red, to orange, to yellow, to green, to blue, to indigo, to violet.

“If we are sad or depressed, there will be darker colors on our aura readings,” she explains. “If we are living in a shiny, light framework, then golden light will be felt by all who come in contact.”

To figure out your own aura color, you can seek a spiritual advisor who will interpret your aura in the process of a reading. You can also take a photograph that will reveal your aura colors, with a special camera known as a Kirlian camera, Hope says.

Ahead, here’s a deeper look into the meaning of aura colors across the rainbow to help guide you as you explore your spiritual journey.

As Hope notes, red is the color of the root chakra, which pertains to the way our physical bodies connect to the physical realm around us. People with this dominant aura color are fearless and bold, with a natural inclination to enjoy life in the form of adventures and experiences in their physical space.

People with red-dominant auras don't typically fear "death, birth, over-indulgence, sensuality, or adrenaline-inducing activities," according to Aura Aura, the platform for Detroit-based conceptual artist and energetics researcher Eileen Lee. Red-dominant people are typically bold, passionate, and not inclined to deny physical pleasures.

The presence of murky or dark red within an aura can suggest ongoing frustration, trauma, or burnout.

Lighter pink, which corresponds to the heart chakra, is rarer among aura colors. It's generally associated with people who are tender, kind, sensitive, and gentle with others. Pink-dominant people are committed to notions about romantic love, and focus on sustaining these sparks in their relationships. These people are likelier to work in creative fields. They have a soothing, healing way about them that naturally comforts others.

Associated with the sacral chakra is the aura color orange. This color connects with creative and sensual energy, and an orange-dominant person holds relationships in highest regard, prioritizing them and developing them easily. These people are natural collaborators and find pleasure and comfort in connection. These people might be world travelers or adventure seekers, imbued with dynamism, wanderlust, and energy. "If people have a strong orange aura, they are gifted creatives who are passionate about their art," say Love Twintuitives.

Murky orange can mean an imbalance that stifles self expression.

Yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra, and people with this as their dominant aura color tend to be self assured and confident. This naturally high self esteem contributes both to happiness as well as to leadership abilities, with infectious positivity and motivational charisma. Like the sun, these people glow with both joy and warmth.

A darker or murkier yellow aura could mean a tendency toward either self criticism or overconfidence, on the other side of the spectrum — a result of “operating too much from our ego-driven self,” according to Aura Aura.

Lighter blue aura is connected with the throat chakra, and the lighter the blue shade the more calm the energy. A person whose aura is dominated by this shade is naturally philosophical, expressive, and inclined to communicate transparently. Typically, these people are inclined to express these truths from a place of feelings, versus facts. "These expressive dreamers place a great importance on personal relationships. Honesty and clarity in communication is very important to them," according to Aura Aura. "They love to gather and share wisdom and make great philosophers."

The darker blue shade known as indigo is associated with the third-eye chakra. People with indigo auras are especially intuitive. "If a person has a strong indigo aura, they are highly intuitively connected and supernaturally psychically gifted seers," Love Twintuitives say. They are empathetic, and are moved to act more by feelings than facts. They are spontaneous and thrive on connection.

Dark or murky indigo can suggest a break from intuition or a phase marked by judgment. "The third eye blinded would have severe emotional and mental instability," Love Twintuitives say.

Connected with the soul chakra, white is the aura color associated with only a small number of people: those who have “transcended the limitations of the physical realm,” according to Aura Aura, which estimates there might be just a few of these people alive. They have no issues with their health or mental energy. It's the color of compassion and unconditional love.

"Angels look like they have wings, but it’s actually their auras that humans perceive as wings," Love Twintuitives explain. "Likely why white is symbolic of angelic beings."

More common are people who have white among a collection of colors in their aura. Such indicates someone who’s in a particularly receptive and pure state.

When a white aura looks cloudy, it could suggest a person in a state of waiting or seeking.
