“K-Y is not just for sex anymore,” said David Dalrymple, the designer for House of Field, whose owner Patricia Field has agreed to act a curator of the exhibit. “People can use it for lip gloss and hair gel and moisturizer.”

For decades, K-Y has been a staple in bedrooms nationwide, but more recently it has been upstaged by newer products that either do a better job or are perceived to be more cutting edge, several sex therapists said.

Astroglide, introduced by Bioglide in 1993, now has roughly $12 million in annual sales, or 15 percent of the $80 million market for personal lubricants, a spokeswoman Lynne Merrill said. Last year, Atroglide’s sales grew 24 percent, outpacing the 8 percent growth of the broader personal lubricant market.

K-Y Jelly, manufactured by McNeil PPC, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, would not disclose sales figures.

K-Y has begun fighting back by rolling out new products, including K-Y Warming Liquid, in stores next month, which heats on contact. A recently introduced K-Y Ultragel offers a thicker consistency than the jelly. And K-Y Brand Liquid Personal Lubricant, launched last year, is more slippery.

“Astroglide came up with a better mousetrap years ago, and then K-Y has been trying to catch up,” said Dr. Norman Fertel, a sex therapist in Brooklyn. “People don’t realize that K-Y Jelly isn’t the best for sexual lubrication, because it gums up.”

If the new marketing campaign has its desired effect, K-Y will transcend sex.

Field, who is also the stylist for the “Sex and the City” TV show, offers this suggestion: Use K-Y when trying to slip into a latex tube top. Now that’s a lube job.
