who has ajla tomljanovic dated?
Ajla Tomljanović beat Serena Williams in the third round of the US Open on Friday (September 2), meaning her Tennis career is over.
The 40-year-old announced that she was retiring from tennis last month after winning a staggering 23 grand slam singles titles.
“I have never liked the word retirement,” she wrote in Vogue in August. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition.”
“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,” she continued.
Tears ran down her face as she lost to the Croatian-Australian athlete, who has won four singles and three doubles titles on the ITF Circuit and ranks at world No. 38.
Following her win, everyone wants to know more about Ajla, including who she is dating. Read on to find out all about her love life…
The 29-year-old recently split from fellow Tennis player Matteo Berretini, who she dated for around two years from 2019 to 2022.
He is an Italian professional tennis player who ranked as world No.6 in singles in January 2022 and reached the final at Wimbledon 2021.
The pair went public with their relationship in 2019, but rumours that they had broken up began flooding the internet in March 2022, and Matteo confirmed it in June.
During a press conference following his Queen’s Club Championships semi-final win, he said: “Yeah, I’m single but it’s not like something that I am looking for, like, it’s not that I’m waking up and have to find love.”
“It’s just something that is happening, it’s good for me, if it doesn’t, it’s another day, you know,” he continued before saying he’s spending more time with his team and family.
Ajla and Matteo were often spotted supporting each other at tennis matches and often attended events together including the 2021 Met Gala.
Before that, the tennis star dated Nick Kyrgios for two years from 2015 to 2017.
He is an Australian professional tennis star who has won seven ATP Tour singles, including the 2019 and 2022 Washington Open.
The athlete has reached eleven finals, including Wimbledon in 2022, and earned his career-high singles ranking of world No. 13 in 2016.
According to The Express, the 27-year-old was seen leaving a London nightclub with two women in 2017 and Ajla unfollowed him on Instagram the following day.
However, they rekindled their relationship briefly and a source close to the couple said: “Nick would have done anything to make it up to Ajla.”
“He doesn’t ever want to lose her again because she gets him. They’re pretty much the perfect match and he’s ready to settle down,” they continued.
However, things obviously turned sour again sometime before 2019, when Ajla found love with Matteo Berrettini.
In September 2022, Ajla is single following her split from Matteo and focusing on her tennis career.
It’s certainly paying off too as she beat Serena, who is arguably the best tennis player of all time, at the US Open on Friday (September 2).
She gained a 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 victory at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium and currently plays for Australia after previously representing Croatia.
The athlete was born in Zagreb, Croatia, but lives in Florida. She isn’t Australian, but decided to change her allegiance in 2014.
She applied for residence in the country because she “saw an opportunity to take her game to the next level by moving to Australia,” the New York Times reports.
Previously, Tomljanović was linked to fellow Australian player Nick Kyrgios in an on-again, off-again relationship. (Kyrgios is now dating influencer Costeen Hatzi.)
And he will have the support of local Ajla Tomljanovic, who he has been dating since 2019.
Tomljanovic was born on May 7, 1993 in Zagreb in Croatia.
Until 2021, she had only got beyond the second round in one Grand Slam, the 2014 French Open.
But she reached a career high ranking of 39 in April 2019, having originally starred more in doubles.
Tomljanovic has yet to win a tournament on the WTA circuit, making four finals - including the Hua Hin Championships in Thailand in February, where she lost to Dayana Yastremska.
The tennis star switched her national allegiances from Croatia to Australia after beginning to compete for the Aussies at the 2014 US Open.
Despite obtaining permanent residency, she still had to represent Croatia at non-Grand Slam tournaments until gaining full Australian citizenship in January 2018.
Matteo Berrettini is an Italian tennis player ranked number nine in the world (June 2021).
In 2019, he enjoyed his career best grand slam finish as he reached the semi-final of the US Open before losing in straight sets to Rafael Nadal.
And the Italian is in good form in 2021, having reached the fourth round of the Australian Open before being forced to retire injured ahead of his match with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
He then made it all the way to the quarter-final of the French Open last month, where he gave Novak Djokovic a big test before losing in four sets.
World number one Djokovic was seen screaming with relief after making it through the match.
It had been reported that the pair were getting quite close with each other, having photographed themselves shopping in Austria.
Berrettini was in Vienna for a tournament, while Tomljanovic's WTA season had finished.
And if that hint wasn't big enough, fellow tennis star Maria Sakkari ensured everyone knew by responding to the Instagram post with several loved-up emojis.
And with their relationship now official, the two players are regularly seen supporting their partners at each others' matches.
Berrettini said: “I feel like 10 times more stressed watching her match than when I’m playing my match. So I like it when we’re playing at the same time.
“I finished first, like five minutes before. I’m playing best of five, so I didn’t know if she won her match because they weren’t showing the score. So I was like ‘maybe she finished before me, maybe she’s coming here’.
“Then I was like making movies; maybe she lost, maybe she’s upset. I stepped out of the court and my coach said it was 5-1. Then I saw it was 15-40 and I was like ‘oh no’. I would rather play than watch her match.”
Tomljanovic dated her fellow Aussie and tennis player Nick Kyrgios for two years, before the pair broke it off in 2017.
Kyrgios' personal life has been under the scanner. From his relationship with colleagues to his camaraderie with his fellow countrymen, even his dating life, everything has been scrutinized.
The Australian seems to be in a much better place when it comes to his romantic life, so here's a look at how that happened:
Costeen Hatzipourganis is Kyrgios' current partner. She has often been spotted cheering for her boyfriend and her presence also seems to have a positive effect on him.
Hatzipourganis is a blogger and social media influencer with a considerable fan following. She was ranked as one of the most influential women in Australia this year, coming in at No. 21. She placed ahead of more established stars, including pop icon Kylie Minogue and movie star Elizabeth Debicki.
While the two have been quite open about their relationship, they still haven't laid it all out with regards to how it all began. It is widely believed that they ended up meeting during a night out in Sydney in November 2021 and the seeds for their romance were sown that night.
Kyrgios and Hatzipourganis remained in touch following their initial encounter and gradually became closer. The duo started dating soon after and their relationship seems to have gotten stronger with time.
Before dating Hatzipourganis, Kyrgios was in a relationship with tennis player Ajla Tomljanovic from 2017 to 2018. The two dated on and off during that period and parted ways after a while.
He was in a relationship with Chiara Passari for almost a year, starting in 2020. Kyrgios' relationship with Passari didn't end in amicable terms as she accused him of common assault, with the matter now being handled by the legal system.
The Australian then found solace in the arms of Hatzipourganis, making his relationship with her public in December 2021.
The two have since frequently posted about each other on social media, along with engaging in copious amounts of public displays of affection. Kyrgios enjoyed a career-best season in 2022, so one can say the relationship certainly played a part in his success.
